SystemC is a system-level modeling language and simulation framework which facilitates design and verification of processor designs at different levels. Recently, SystemC is becoming a popular choice for designers of both System-On-Chip (SoC) and embedded processors, clue to its adaptability at cycle as well as transaction levels, and ability to model concurrent processes. However, the single threaded simulation kernel inherent to SystemC, prevents it froth utilizing the potential computing power of symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) machines to speed up hardware simulation. We present a parallel SystemC simulation kernel, which is implemented using parallel programming techniques and leverages the parallel execution capabilities of multi-core machines to speed up hardware simulation. We discuss the mechanism we use for mapping parallel SystemC modules into different cores. Finally we report the performance of the parallelized SystemC kernel using a linear pipelined performance model and a pipelined performance model tailored to exhibit the behavior of real world simulation. Our results demonstrate that the performance improvement obtained by using parallelized SystemC for simulation of the above models is significant and improves with increasing design complexity of the simulated design and the number of cores in the machine running the simulators.

In recent years, Web Services technologies have been successfully used for simplifying interoperability while providing scalability and flexibility in multiple applications, including distributed simulation software. The RESTful-CD++ simulation Server provides Web Services according to the REST principles by exposing services as URIs and consumed via HTTP. messages. Therefore, the server becomes a service part of the Web that can be easily mashed-up with other applications and simulation software. In contrast, RPC-style SOAP-based Web Services use the Web as a transmission medium by exposing few URIs and many RPCs. RESTful-CD++ is (to our best knowledge) the only existing RESTful system in this area. Further, this distributed simulation package provides pioneering distributed simulation services using the Web architectural style. We present an overview of the principles, design and implementation of the RESTful-CD++ HTTP server and DCD++ simulation. We show that REST fulfills WS objectives with a much better and easier style than the SOAP-based systems.

A recent work has presented the design and implementation of a software library;named DyMeLoR, supporting transparent log/restore facilities for optimistic simulation objects with generic memory layout. This library offers the possibility, to allocate/deallocate memory chunks via standard API, and performs log/restore of the object state via pack/unpack techniques, exploiting ad-hoc meta-data concisely identifying the object state layout at each point in simulation time. In this paper we complement such a library, with a software architecture offering the following additional advantages: (i) run-time identification of chunk updates within the dynamic memory map, (ii) reduced checkpoint latency and increased effectiveness in memory usage thanks to log/restore facilities based on (periodic) snapshots of the whole simulation object state, taken via the incremental copy of the modified (dirty) chunks only. Our approach is based on software instrumentation techniques (suited for LINUX and the ELF format), targeting memory update references performed by the application-level software, and on a lightweight run-time monitoring mechanism providing minimal overhead while tracking the exact memory addresses and the size of memory areas dirtied by the execution of each event. Also, our design has been oriented to portability across 32-bit and 64-bit Intel compliant architectures, thus covering a wide spectrum of off-the-shelf machines.

Since the 1970's, the scientific field of model-based performance and dependability evaluation has been flourishing. Starting with breakthroughs in the area of closed queueing networks in the 1970's, the 1980's brought new results on state-based methods, such as those for stochastic Petri nets and matrix-geometric methods, whereas the 1990's introduced process algebra-type models. Since the turn of the century, techniques for stochastic model checking are being introduced, to name just a few major developments. The applicability of all these techniques has been boosted enormously through Moore's law;these days, stochastic models with tens of millions of states can easily be dealt with on a standard desktop or laptop computer. A dozen or so dedicated conferences serve the scientific field, as well as a number of scientific journals. However, for the field as a whole to make progress, it is important to step back, and to consider how all these as-such important developments have really changed the way computer and communication systems are being designed and operated. The answer to this question is most probable rather disappointing. I do observe a rather strong discrepancy between what is being published in top conferences and journals, and what is being used in real practice. Blaming industry for this would be too easy a way out. Currently, we do not see model-based performance and dependability evaluation as key step in the design process for new computer and communication systems. Moreover, in the exceptional cases that we do see performance and dependability evaluation being part of a design practice, the employed techniques are not the ones referred to above, but instead, depending on the application area, techniques like discrete-event simulation on the basis of hand-crafted simulation programs (communication protocols), or techniques based on (non-stochastic) timed-automata or timeless behavioral models (embedded systems). We describe "first principles" based methods for developing synthetic urban and national scale social contact networks. Unlike simple random graph techniques, these methods use real world data sources and combine them with behavioral and social theories to synthesize networks. We develop a synthetic population for the United States modeling every individual in the population including household structure, demographics and a 24-hour activity sequence. The process involves collecting and manipulating public and proprietary data sets integrated into a common architecture for data exchange and then using these data sets to generate new relations. A social contact network is derived from the synthetic population based on physical co-location of interacting persons. We use graph measures to compare and contrast the structural characteristics of the social networks that span different urban regions. We then simulate diffusion processes on these networks and analyze similarities and differences in the structure of the networks. ©2009 ieee.

simulation replication is a necessity for all stochastic simulations. Its efficient execution is particularly important when additional techniques are used on top, such as optimization or sensitivity analysis. One way to improve replication efficiency is to ensure that the best configuration of the simulation system is used for execution. A selection of the best configuration is possible when the number of required replications is sufficiently high, even without any prior knowledge on simulator performance or problem instance. We present an adaptive replication mechanism that combines portfolio theory with reinforcement learning: it adapts itself to the given problem instance at runtime and can be restricted to an efficient algorithm portfolio.

Unexpected model behaviors need explanation, so valid behaviors can be separated from errors. Understanding unexpected behavior requires accumulation of insight into the behavior and the conditions under which it arises. Explanation Exploration (EE) has been presented to gather insight into unexpected behaviors. EE provides subject matter experts (SMEs) with the capability to test hypotheses about an unexpected behavior by semi-automatically creating conditions of interest under which SMEs can observe the unexpected behavior. EE also reveals the interactions of identified variables that influence the unexpected behavior. Causal Program Slicing, improves EE by: automatically identifying all variables in the model that may influence the unexpected behavior, quantifying how the state changes in those variables influence the unexpected behavior, and mapping the quantified state changes in the variables to the statements in the model's source code that cause change in state. These capabilities require less SME knowledge and provide more insight than EE.

The Lightweight Time Warp (LTW) protocol offers a novel approach to high-performance optimistic parallel discrete-event simulation, especially when a large number of simultaneous events need to be executed at each virtual time. With LTW, the local simulation space on each node is partitioned into two sub-domains, allowing purely optimistic simulation to be driven by only a few full-fledged logical processes (LPs), while most processes are turned into lightweight LPs, free from the burden associated with Time Warp (TW) execution. This paper presents a comparative performance evaluation of the TW and LTW protocols for simulating several DEVS-based environmental models. The experiments indicate that the LTW protocol improves performance in terms of shortened execution time, reduced memory usage, lowered operational cost, and enhanced system stability.

Parallel discrete event simulation has been established as a technique which has great potential to speed up the execution of gate level circuit simulation. A fundamental problem posed by a parallel environment is the decision of whether it is best to simulate a particular circuit sequentially or on a parallel platform. Furthermore, in the event that a circuit should be simulated on a parallel platform, it is necessary to decide how many computing nodes should be used on the given platform. In this paper we propose a machine learning algorithm as an aid in making these decisions. The algorithm is based on the well-known K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm. After an extensive training regime, it was shown to make a correct prediction 99% of the time on whether to use a parallel or sequential simulator. The predicted number of nodes to use on a parallel platform was shown to produce an average execution time which was not more than 12% of the smallest execution time. The configuration which resulted in the minimal execution time was picked 61 % of the time.
