Modeling is central to doing and learning object-oriented development We present a new tool, Ideogramic UML, for gesture-based collaborative modeling with the Unified Modeling Language (UML), which can be used to collaboratively teach and learn modeling. Furthermore, we discuss how we have effectively used Ideogramic UML to teach object-oriented modeling and the UML to groups of students using the UML for project assignments.
Cycle-accurate simulation is far too slow for modeling the expected performance of full parallel applications on large HPC systems. And just running an application on a system and observing wallclock time tells you no...

This paper describes a collaborative methodology (tools and processes) for cost-effective development and quality delivery of online courseware. These methods are being used in the development and delivery of online courseware for information designers in the areas of technical writing, user interface design, usability testing, graphic design and web-based programming. Using this methodology, each course is touched by various members of a geographically dispersed, multi-disciplinary team of professional writers, instructional designers, graphic and visual interaction designers, human factors specialists and software engineers as it migrates through the analysis, design, development and verification process. Each member contributes their individual expertise. The process leverages familiar collaborative authoring tools while supporting robust single-source development using XML and eLeaming standards. This methodology alleviates many of the common problems associated with virtual team collaboration such as interworking of multiple disciplines, managing geographical distribution, managing quality control. Through the use of this methodology we have been able to maintain constant quality-control while dramatically reducing the development times ordinarily associated with online course development. As such the purpose of this paper is to share our expieriences and experiences with other professionals in the information design community.
In wide area computing systems, it is often desirable to create remote read-only copies (replicas) of files. Replication can be used to reduce access latency, improve data locality, and/or increase robustness, scalabi...

Balancing the needs of information distributors and their audiences has grown harder in the age of the Internet. While the demand for attention continues to increase rapidly with the volume of information and communication, the supply of human attention is relatively fixed. Markets are a social institution for efficiently balancing supply and demand of scarce resources. Charging a price for sending messages may help discipline senders from demanding more attention than they are willing to pay for. Price may also help recipients estimate the value of a message before reading it. We report the results of two laboratory experiments to explore the consequences of a pricing system for electronic mail. Charging postage for email causes senders to be more selective and send fewer messages. However, recipients did not use the postage paid by senders as a signal of importance. These studies suggest markets for attention have potential, but their design needs more work.

Mobile technology requires new methods for studying its use under realistic conditions "in the field." Reflexively, mobile technology also creates new opportunities for data collection while participants are remotely located. We report on our experiences with a variation on the paper-based diary study technique, which we extend by using voice-mail paired with mobile and landline telephony to more easily collect data in natural situations. We discuss lessons learned from experiences with voice-mail diary studies in two investigations of different scope. We also present suggestions for tailoring the technique to different research objectives, garnering high subject participation, and configuring the voice-mail system for data collection.

In order to be completely adopted by industry, the workflow Management Systems (WFMS) have to provide a more complete support to organisational processes. The cooperation is part of the missing features. In this paper, we propose to integrate a computersupportedcooperativework system in a WFMS to solve the cooperation problem. This integration consists in an interoperability between the two systems thanks to the Meta-Object Facility and the inheritance. By describing the construction scenario of the bridge between the two systems, this paper shows the benefits in using the MOF for achieving interoperability.

This paper presents a diary study of rendezvousing as performed by university students. The study suggests that rendezvousing frequently does not occur exactly as planned, but this is not necessarily problematic. It also reveals that 'problem' rendezvous were attributed more frequently to modes of travel, over-running of previous activities and lack of information about other rendezvousers, than to lack of information about travel, or local geography. These, and other, findings have implications for the design of position-aware computing and communications for the general public.

As a promising approach to end-user computing, programming by demonstration (PBD) techniques have been explored by many researchers in single-user applications. This paper investigates how PBD techniques can be used to support end-user customization of groupware tools. In collaborative applications, complex semantic relationships can emerge unanticipatedly among objects (participants, data artifacts, tools, devices, etc.) such as the hierarchical organization of participants, consistency maintenance among different views of the same data, and awareness control. It is important that end users are empowered to customize the groupware application to model and enforce such relationships. We present an active rule based approach to modeling user-defined semantic relationships in collaborative applications and explore a demonstrational approach for end-user customization of collaboration tools to support the definition of those relationships. The presented work is based on our work on a shared whiteboard tool, CAB or Collaborative Active whiteBoard. Our approach is being generalized to support end-user defined object relationships in shared workspaces.
