Health discussion forums provide valuable information about diseases, symptoms, treatments and risk factors from a patient perspective, and allow exchanging experiences and mutual support. This paper analyzes and compares three different forums, Health Boards, Patient and Reddit, using three major conditions as representative samples: blood pressure, depression and diabetes. The analysis investigates three principal dimensions: the intensity of user engagement, the explicit coverage of salient entities such as frequent symptoms or risk factors, and the degree of medical detail expressed by specific drugs and their dosages. We report on commonalities across the three forums and on key findings about how they differ in their contents and interactions.

With the tendency of hybrid workplace, more people work from home, offering benefits for both individuals and organizations. However, physical separation from colleagues increases social isolation. Home workers often lack information on their colleagues’ locations, presence, and intentions—key aspects of workspace Awareness (WA). WA can contribute to collaborative interactions and have the potential to influence social connectedness. Considering home scenarios, lights within smart homes offer potential as carriers of ambient displays. This study proposed LiteCo, a Hybrid Presence System, designed to promote WA among home workers through lighting design. Twelve participants evaluated LiteCo’s impact on WA and social connectedness (SC). Results show that LiteCo can enhance WA by presenting office dynamics to home workers, and lead to higher level of SC. It also helps synchronize work rhythms, fosters emotional connections, and maintains appropriate attention levels while balancing privacy concerns. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Engagement estimation plays a crucial role in understanding human social behaviors, attracting increasing research interests in fields such as affective computing and human-computer interaction. In this paper, we propose a Dialogue-Aware Transformer framework (DAT) with Modality-Group Fusion (MGF), which relies solely on audio-visual input and is language-independent, for estimating human engagement in conversations. Specifically, our method employs a modality-group fusion strategy that independently fuses audio and visual features within each modality for each person before inferring the entire audio-visual content. This strategy significantly enhances the model's performance and robustness. Additionally, to better estimate the target participant's engagement levels, the introduced Dialogue-Aware Transformer considers both the participant's behavior and cues from their conversational partners. Our method was rigorously tested in the Multi-Domain Engagement Estimation Challenge held by MultiMediate'24, demonstrating notable improvements in engagement-level regression precision over the baseline model. Notably, our approach achieves a CCC score of 0.76 on the NoXi Base test set and an average CCC of 0.64 across the NoXi Base, NoXi-Add, and MPIIGI test sets. As the largest source of technical information around the world, patents are regarded as an essential crystallization and carrier of knowledge and technological innovation. Patent transformation is conducive not only to enhancing economic efficiency, but also to improving productivity and the rational utilization of resources. There is an imbalance between high patent ownership and low transformation rates. We try to predict the occurrence of transformation events from the patent assignment. However, there are some challenges in predicting patent transformation: (1) how to capture transformation features of patents, especially combined with the transfer time factor. (2) how to predict patent transfer time effectively. To address these challenges, a Patent Transfer Time Forecasting Model (PTTFM) is proposed. The model includes: (1) extraction of time-varying features of patents. (2) the patent transfer time is forecast using a Neural Temporal Point Process. By testing the model on patents under different classifications, the experimental results are obtained to show that the proposed model is applicable to predict the timing of patent assignment within a certain time frame, especially one month. Our work may facilitate patent transformation while interpretability is ensured for transformation events. © 2023 IEEE.

This issue includes 209 papers, of which 175 were accepted from the Jan 2023 cycle, and 34 were accepted from the Jul 2023 cycle. It reflects great efforts and contributions from external reviewers, Associate Chairs and Editors, who together have conducted a rigorous review process to select contributions of the highest quality advancing the CSCW field. As Track Chairs, we are grateful for the community's collective efforts to continue shaping and sharing CSCW's tradition of high-quality scholarship across the years. © 2024 Owner/Author.

In practical applications, implementing reinforcement learning in multi-Agent environments is very important. Most of the existing multi-Agent reinforcement learning algorithms lack communication capabilities, forcing agents to learn solely from their local observations. Some reinforcement learning algorithms that include communication also limit the number of communicating individuals. We propose a multi-Agent reinforcement learning algorithm that incorporates a local communication mechanism. This algorithm does not need to limit the number of individuals with whom the agent communicates. The agent can communicate with any number of agents in each time step, and the agent can choose whether to communicate and with whom to communicate. Besides, this algorithm requires no additional communication content and only uses the information obtained by the agent from the environment. Compared with recent methods, this method makes better use of the environmental information that the agent can obtain and plays a greater role in the team. This makes the actions of multi-Agents more in line with human group actions. To verify the effect of our algorithm, we conducted experiments on several mature open-source multi-Agent reinforcement learning environments. The experimental results show that our algorithm is better than MADDPG and M3DDPG. © 2024 IEEE.

Even though conventional methods have contributed a lot to understanding information diffusion to a certain extent, they are limited by the neglect of considering survivors (i.e., non-participants). As the counterpart to participants, survivors exert analogously a vital role in cascade analysis, which represent the inaccessible scope of the message. To characterize participants and survivors simultaneously and assemble them into the macro-level cascade representation, we propose an end-to-end model, named complement coupling network, which utilizes multi-gating mechanism to coalesce inhomogeneous input. We first design a novel strategy for sampling survivors, which extracts a sequence of emblematic survivors corresponding to the sequence of observed participants. Afterwards, the complement gate is designed to weigh the contributions of the participant and survivor to the cascade at each timestamp. The reset and output gates are reformed to update the cell state and output the cascade snapshot, respectively. Furthermore, an attention mechanism keyed by the source node is introduced to assemble all snapshots within the observation window for predicting multiple subsequent activated users. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed model significantly outperforms state-of-the-art approaches. © 2023 IEEE.

The opportunistic networks are a kind of ad hoc networks that rely on the chance of nodes meeting to transmit messages. Acting as an effective supplement to 4G and 5G networks in some special scenarios where hardware devices are limited, the opportunistic networks have a significant application in health monitoring, warning broadcasting, disaster relief, and so on. The mobility model is one of the research focuses on the opportunistic networks. On the basis of the social mobility theory proposed by Sorokin, a general mobility model, which is suited for various scenarios, called T-Sorokin is proposed. This model is described as a seven-tuple and implemented on the Opportunistic Network Environment simulator and fits both Infocom06 and Rome taxi data set, which includes different areas ranging from hotel to city and different mobile units ranging from person to taxi. The results of experiments demonstrate that the T-Sorokin model has the advantage of generality, simplicity, and accuracy. It can simply establish movement tracks close to real data under different scenarios. © 2023 IEEE.

Drug addiction has become one of the most severe social problems in the United States. Recent research has turned attention to the possibility of using social media to detect opioid usages and offer interventions. However, most prior studies focus on textual and networking-based social media such as Twitter and Face-book. There is limited understanding of how video-based platforms, such as YouTube, allow creators to share drug addiction-related videos and discourse addiction problems. This work is an initial step to fill this knowledge gap by analyzing 166 YouTube videos. We found that YouTubers leverage videos to disclose personal addiction experiences, provide professional recommendations, and express addiction-related opinions and lifestyles. Therefore YouTube videos discuss more of the risks, blames, and solutions of drug addiction. *Trigger warning: this paper contains substance abuse, addiction, and mental illness.

Robotic technology can support the creation of new tools that improve the creative process of cinematography. It is crucial to consider the specific requirements and perspectives of industry professionals when designing and developing these tools. In this paper, we present the results from exploratory interviews with three cinematography practitioners, which included a demonstration of a prototype robotic system. We identified many factors that can impact the design, adoption, and use of robotic support for cinematography, including: (1) the ability to meet requirements for cost, quality, mobility, creativity, and reliability;(2) the compatibility and integration of tools with existing workflows, equipment, and software;and (3) the potential for new creative opportunities that robotic technology can open up. Our findings provide a starting point for future co-design projects that aim to support the work of cinematographers with collaborative robots. © 2023 Owner/Author.
