My dissertation research explores how digital peer-to-peer (P2P) payments (performing one to one online financial transactions via a digital or mobile device) as an emerging financial technology affect people's everyday economic and social lives and seeks to redesign such technology for supporting both secure financial transactions and nuanced social interactions/connections through a sociotechnical approach. Specifically, my goal is to i) reveal and elaborate the multidimensional influences of digital P2P payments on inter-personal relationships in terms of both experiences of financial exchanges and everyday social interactions, ii) redesign and develop prototypes for future digital P2P payments platforms that highlight the importance of the interplay of financial transactions and social engagement. My research will not only contribute to better understanding new and more complicated social phenomena and dynamics emerging in today's digital economy but also benefit the HCI community by informing future research on computer-mediated communication through financial technologies.

In contrast to the adoption of personal assistants, social robots have yet to break into the domestic market. Several manufacturers have introduced and quickly retracted their social robots for the home. We report on a survey study (N = 50) to understand potential users' perceptions towards these social robots. Participants were presented with videos of three domestic social robots and subsequently provided their perception of these in terms of perceived benefits, attraction, privacy risk, usage intention, and capabilities. While participants perceived hedonic and utilitarian benefits, we found a low intention of future adoption of these devices. Further, our findings showed that owners of personal assistants perceived significantly higher hedonic benefits, fewer privacy risks, and higher intention to use domestic social robots. Our work provides an initial step towards understanding perceptions towards social robots and how previous exposure to domestic AI shapes users' perceptions. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Domestic violence (DV) is a social, political, and legal problem and requires contextual examination. In the U.S., earlier advocacy work focused on law reform to empower survivors in influencing the public and state in taking DV seriously and providing resources to support and protect survivors. However, harm is still perpetuated systemically and socially for survivors, especially from religious and racial minorities. In my dissertation work, I focus on DV within the Muslim population in the U.S. due to the unique issues Muslim survivors face when dealing with governmental services and service providers (e.g., gendered Islamophobia, racial discrimination, punitive actions) and within the Muslim community itself (e.g., community trauma, untrained faith leaders in dealing with abuse). I argue that in order to validate the Muslim survivor's experience, provide competent resources and information, and allow for informed decision making, a transformative justice (TJ) approach supported by Islamic feminism and trauma-informed healing concepts must be integrated into design, to provide a multidimensional approach to tackling DV within the Muslim community. I will conceptually explore the strengths and weaknesses of using a TJ model through using design as a mode of social inquiry to elicit and understand the social phenomena of DV and TJ within sociotechnical interventions.

Previous initiatives have identified the potential of the Latin American region for CSCW research. However, CSCW work in the region is still disconnected, produced by small, isolated groups that often have a hard time learning about each other and finding opportunities to do research together. This workshop is an initiative of the SIGCHI Latin America Committee to bring these groups together to discuss their research, the challenges they perceive, and the possible initiatives that could be conducted to strengthen the region.

Research on creativity support tools (CSTs) has a long history in Human-computer Interaction (HCI);however, researchers often focus on developing novel CSTs and verifying them in a controlled lab setting, rather than on capturing the creative process in the wild. In reality, creative activity is exploratory, laborious, and involves multiple CSTs;which together form a creativity support environment or ecology. Creative activity is also social, cultural, and collaborative with people distributing, modifying, and reacting to the creations of others. This process can inspire subsequent iterations. To understand and support open-ended, culturally embedded, collaborative creativity, HCI researchers are seeking new methods to study the sociocultural aspects of creativity support. This Special Interest Group on Creativity and Cultures in computing (SIGCCC) invites diverse researchers to provide a forum for CST discussions from a wide sociocultural lens. The participants will identify and discuss the state-of-the-art and conceptualize future directions for creativity support research. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Research across political science, communications, sociology, and human-computer interaction has explored howmodern social movements are leveraging technologies and digital tools to mobilize for social change. While mass mobilization has influenced policy, triggered revolutions, and influenced cultures globally, mobilization is just one method of collective action. In contrast, the more structured, relationship-focused practice of community organizing can also enable mass societal change, such as in the US Civil Rights movement and in the development of tech-giant labor unions. While there is exploration into how we might research and design tools informed by organizing, specific frameworks and practices of community organizing - such as the People, Power, Change framework - also must evolve in response to the ever changing landscape of technology in society. In this workshop, we will bring together community organizers, technologists, designers, and researchers to explore what it might mean to organize and center relationships in the modern era with (or without) computer support, in what contexts we should prioritize organizing rather than mobilizing, and how we might iterate upon our existing framework to respond to our findings. We will produce an iterated draft of a traditional organizing framework.

In this paper, we present a deterministic Õ(log1/3)-round algorithm for the 2-ruling set problem in the sublinear Massively Parallel Computation (MPC) model. This improves upon the fastest known deterministic 2-ruling set algorithm for this model, which is the Õ(√log;n)-round algorithm by Giliberti and Parsaeian (PODC 2024). Our result is obtained by derandomizing the "sample-and-gather"approach of Kothapalli, Pai, and Pemmaraju (FSTTCS 2020). The "sample-and-gather"approach involves making random sampling decisions, not just for the current iteration, but a batch of future iterations. Thus, derandomizing this approach requires the "fixing"of randomness for a batch of future iterations. We further extend our results to show that a β-ruling set for β ≥ 2 can be obtained in Õ(log1/2β - 1 Δ) deterministic rounds in the sublinear MPC model. Additionally, we present a deterministic β-ruling set algorithms for sparse graphs (i.e., bounded arboricity graphs) where β ≥ 2, which runs in Õ(log1/2β - 1 λ) rounds for arboricity-λ graphs in the sublinear MPC model. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

An essential challenge in graph data analysis and mining is to simply and effectively deal with large-scale network data that is expanding dynamically. Although batch-based parallel graph computation frameworks have better accuracy, they cannot process incremental data on time and need to be recomputed. To process real-time data, stream processing applications need to be redeveloped, which increases the redundancy of work, and some existing dynamic graph computation schemes are not generalizable. This paper proposes a unified stream and batch graph computing model(USBGM). The model is compatible with both stream and batch graph computing. Graph operators and algorithms developed based on the model can handle stream and batch graph data in a unified manner. Meetings are important for collaboration, decision-making, and conflict resolution within groups. While remote meetings offer advantages such as reduced travel time and increased flexibility, they introduce frictions in communication due to the limitations of the medium. This doctoral research aims to examine these frictions and develop new mechanisms to empower the key constituent elements of meetings—attendees and the shared environment—to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of remote meetings. By exploring methods to improve non-verbal communication, task space management, and the formation of a common context, my work contributes to the design of remote meeting systems that alleviate the effects of existing frictions. The research involves the development and evaluation of prototypes, leveraging technologies such as gesture recognition and generative AI to address the identified challenges. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

social robots that promote mental well-being have been developed for healthy aging. Negative attitudes of people, both young and old, towards such robots currently affect their acceptance. Involving young adult relatives in the design of a social robot with sound/voice responses to multimodal touch, gesture, emotion and speech inputs that can be given as a gift to an elderly family member to improve the chances of its acceptance has not been studied. To this end, we conducted two user interaction design studies, the Identification and Matching studies, with 20 and 21 young adults, respectively, and measured expected changes in attitudes using the Negative Attitudes Towards Robots Scale (NARS) and the General Attitudes Towards Robots Scale (GAToRS) questionnaires. Our results show that negative attitudes evolve positively following the relatives–designed approach, which could promote a positive elderly–robot interaction and increasing social robot acceptance. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
