As Human-computer Interaction (HCI) researchers, we can create digital tools which facilitate growth, liberate, and heal, or create tools for trauma, discrimination, and increasing social power divides. Thus, it is extremely important to follow intersectionally grounded, qualitatively sound approaches with a diversity of participants situated across different axes of oppression, not only to improve the effectiveness of our explicit interfaces, but also to change the implicit messages and power structures we encode in them. The outcome of this paper, which represents a middle step between several larger studies, is twofold: a definition of the research methodology used to more accurately study bias in gamification in education, and outreach to potential study participants for the followup study. From current literature on the effects of (mis)representation, inaccessible and harmful designs, and oppressive technologies in HCI, we see that a crucial step in HCI research around gamified education tools is missing: the experiences, stories, and design input of marginalised students. © 2023 Owner/Author.

The computing Curricula 2020 (CC2020) report, issued by the acm and IEEE computer Society, identified knowledge, skills, and dispositions as the three main components of competency for undergraduate programs in computer engineering, computer science, cybersecurity, information systems, information technology, and software engineering, as well as data science. As earlier generations of curricular guidelines in computing have described knowledge and skills to some extent, the notion of dispositions is relatively new to computing. Dispositions are cultivable behaviors, such as adaptability, meticulousness, and self-directedness, that are desirable in the workplace. Multiple employer surveys and interviews confirm that dispositions are as crucial for success in the workplace as the knowledge and skills students develop in their academic programs of study. As such, the CC2020 report describes eleven dispositions that are expected of competent computing graduates. These are distinct and separate from the technical knowledge and disciplinary skills of computing and engineering. Dispositions are also distinct from baseline or cross-disciplinary skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication. In contrast, dispositions are inherently human characteristics that describe individual qualities and behavioral patterns that lead to professional success. Dispositions are learnable, not necessarily teachable. This work-in-progress paper motivates dispositions within computing disciplines and presents the background of this approach. It also discusses the use of reflection exercises and vignettes in understanding, promoting, and fostering behavioral patterns that undergraduate computing students identify as related to dispositions they experience in the course. Preliminary data and results from the study are also presented. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2023.

Heat stress, caused by a warming climate and the increasingly high milk-producing dairy cattle, is one of the major threats to the well-being of dairy cattle as well as the economic, environmental, and social sustainability of dairy farming around the world. Timely identification of cows under heat stress is crucial to improving animal welfare, preventing milk production losses, and preserving water and energy for *** paper presents a smart ear tag, named eTag, and an associated system that can read a passive microchip temperature sensor subcutaneously injected into the animal with minimal discomfort. It features a lightweight design using a single coil shared for microchip scanning and wireless charging. eTag is autonomously recharged by a wireless charger over the head during daily milking sessions, enabling perpetual operation without battery replacement after deployment. The real-world performance of the proposed system was examined intensively in a three-week deployment on seven lactating Holstein cows. We demonstrate that eTag can reliably collect accurate body temperature in real time while maintaining a positive energy flow. The deployment of eTag will enable the timely detection of heat stress and facilitate precision control of barn cooling systems. © 2023 acm.

Graph neural networks (GNNs) have seen widespread usage across multiple real-world applications, yet in transductive learning, they still face challenges in accuracy, efficiency, and scalability, due to the extensive number of trainable parameters in the embedding table and the paradigm of stacking neighborhood aggregations. This paper presents a novel model called xGCN for large-scale network embedding, which is a practical solution for link predictions. xGCN addresses these issues by encoding graph-structure data in an extreme convolutional manner, and has the potential to push the performance of network embedding-based link predictions to a new record. Specifically, instead of assigning each node with a directly learnable embedding vector, xGCN regards node embeddings as static features. It uses a propagation operation to smooth node embeddings and relies on a Refinement neural Network (RefNet) to transform the coarse embeddings derived from the unsupervised propagation into new ones that optimize a training objective. The output of RefNet, which are well-refined embeddings, will replace the original node embeddings. This process is repeated iteratively until the model converges to a satisfying status. Experiments on three social network datasets with link prediction tasks show that xGCN not only achieves the best accuracy compared with a series of competitive baselines but also is highly efficient and scalable. © 2023 acm.

Next Point-of-Interest (POI) recommendation has become a crucial task in Location-Based social Networks (LBSNs), which provide personalized recommendations by predicting the user’s next check-in locations. Commonly used models including Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) and Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have been widely explored. However, these models face significant challenges, including the difficulty of capturing the hierarchical and tree-like structure of POIs in Euclidean space and the sparsity problem inherent in POI recommendations. To address these challenges, we propose a Hyperbolic Variational Graph Auto-Encoder (HVGAE) for next POI recommendation. Specifically, we utilize a Hyperbolic Graph Convolutional Network (Hyperbolic GCN) to model hierarchical structures and tree-like relationships by converting node embeddings from euclidean space to hyperbolic space. Then we use Variational Graph Auto-Encoder (VGAE) to convert node embeddings to probabilistic distributions, enhancing the capture of deeper latent features and providing a more robust model structure. Furthermore, we combine the Mamba4Rec recommender and Rotary Position Embedding (RoPE) and propose Rotary Position Mamba (RPMamba) to effectively utilize POI embeddings rich in sequential information, which improves the accuracy of the next POI recommendation. Extensive experiments on three public datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the HVGAE model. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

computer-supported cooperativework (CSCW) and Human- computer Interaction (HCI) have long studied how technology can support material and relational aspects of care work, typically in clinical healthcare settings. More recently, we see increasing recognition of care work such as informal healthcare provision, child and elderly care, organizing and advocacy, domestic work, and service work. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored long-present tensions between the deep necessity and simultaneous devaluation of our care infrastructures. This highlights the need to attend to the broader social, political, and economic systems that shape care work and the emerging technologies being used in care work. This leads us to ask several critical questions: What counts as care work and why? How is care work (de)valued, (un)supported, or coerced under capitalism and to what end? What narratives drive the push for technology in care work and whom does it benefit? How does care work resist or build resilience against and within oppressive systems? And how can we as researchers advocate for and with care and caregivers? In this one-day workshop, we will bring together researchers from academia, industry, and community-based organizations to reflect on these questions and extend conversations on the future of technology for care work.

Communication disabilities can limit individuals’ social interaction, often leading to isolation and reduced quality of life. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can address these challenges through tailored interventions, often supported by assistive technologies. This study explores how conversational agents (CAs) can support individuals with communication disabilities by incorporating SLP expertise through a co-design approach. We conducted a two-phase study: a co-design workshop to understand the needs of the target population and potential roles of CAs to support communication skill training, and a subsequent evaluation session with a CA prototype by a group of SLPs. Our findings highlighted the importance of designing accessibility, personalization, and motivation features of CAs with greater depth, augmentation, and precision, emphasizing the need for multiple interaction modalities, real-time and deeply tailored personalization, and more intrinsic motivational strategies. Our work contributes to the design and application of inclusive CAs in communication therapy, with implications for clinical and home settings. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

More and more people form and maintain workplace relationships through computer-mediated communication tools nowadays. When all interactions are mediated by technology, people's impression of each other can be affected by the selective social cues transmitted by media. The way people present themselves through communication technology might not be perceived by their remote counterparts in the same way as they do. The mediated social cues could affect how people interpret the perceived action, further affecting impression formation and relationship maintenance between remote collaborators. It is unclear whether and how such mediated social cues cause perception gaps and how such perception gaps among different social connections play a part in relationship building in remote workplaces. The goal of my doctoral thesis is to identify the perception gap in computer-mediated communication and its impact on workplace relationship building. First, in a mixed-methods study in remote workplaces, I found that people's perceptions of their strongly and weakly connected colleagues become polarized when their collaboration is mediated by different communication technologies. Next, I specifically focused on relationship building between potential collaborators, which is another type of weakly connected collaborators in workplaces, via videoconferencing. In a controlled online study, I found that ambient cues from virtual backgrounds cause different impacts on first impressions of remote collaborators and perception of self. With this doctoral thesis, I aim to provide design implications on designing social cues to reduce the perception gaps introduced by communication technology in different stages of workplace relationship building.

Virtual Reality (VR) offers potential for theatre makers to rehearse remotely in settings which are uniquely immersive. In collaboration with a major drama school in the United Kingdom, a longitudinal diary study was completed to examine the utility of consumer-grade VR for theatre rehearsals. Utilising commonly affordable headsets and general-purpose social VR applications, 10 experienced students (2 directors, 8 actors) rehearsed scenes in VR over 3 weeks, before performing them in person. Participants detailed their experiences in diary logs and interviews, expressing the ability to work through spatial arrangements (blocking) as a full body avatar to be positively beneficial. Limitations included the absence of facial expressions and gestural nuance. Our overarching conclusion is that low-tech VR can be a useful aid in theatre rehearsals and early stages of production. In conclusion we outline design recommendations for a) using VR in theatre production and b) research and development of social VR. © 2023 Owner/Author.
