The centrality of the biometric point of sale (POS) machine in the administration of food security in Indian's public distribution system (PDS) invites scrutiny for its primacy as a non-negotiable artifact in the monthly PDS process. In this paper, I critically examine how the POS machine emerges as a site for varying imaginaries of a technologically-mediated welfare system for the three primary stakeholders of the PDS, consisting of the beneficiaries, dealers, and state administrators. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, the paper traces the histories of interaction and portraitures that the three stakeholders bring to their description and interpretation of the POS machine. It shows that an active POS machine provokes the stakeholders in the PDS to view it as an artifact that invites engagement on practical, moral, and knowledge dimensions. The varying biographies' that stakeholders narrate of the POS machine, collectively reveal the design, disposition, and functioning of a social justice infrastructure that rests on the compulsions of biometric technologies to improve inclusion and deter corruption in welfare delivery. © 2021 acm.

Distributed graph computing aims at performing in-depth analysis on large networks in a parallel manner. Iterative communication computation is an important model to perform graph analysis. Moreover, high-efficiency iterative communication computation is necessary for assuring the quality of graph partitioning. Many strategies to improve graph computing are usually based on the hypothesis of single communication iteration which focuses on the optimization of load balance in a single graph partitioning and the improvement of parallel granularity or communication manners. However, a graph in the real-world usually requires complex communication iterations to achieve good analysis results, which often have the problems of data and communication tilting and low analysis efficiency. In this paper, we propose a two-stage graph computing model with communication equilibrium (TSMCE). The model employs a communication-equilibrated graph partitioning strategy (CEGP) for load balancing and a two-stage graph computing mode (TS) to reduce the crossing-partition communication. With the change of graph density, various factors such as load balancing, communication balancing, cross-partition transmission traffic, communication delay, and convergence speed can always maintain an efficient balance. The experiments conducted on the real-world datasets show that the communication-equilibrated graph partitioning strategy can divide a graph with high quality compared with Hash and Metis. Besides, the overall performance of our two-stage graph computing model with communication equilibrium is higher than that of the BSP model. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have been widely applied in fields such as social network analysis and recommendation systems. Recently, deep GCNs have emerged, enabling the exploration of deeper hidden information. Compared to traditional shallow GCNs, deep GCNs feature significantly more layers, leading to considerable computational and data movement challenges. Processing-In-Memory (PIM) offers a promising solution for efficiently handling GCNs by enabling near-data computation, thus reducing data transfer between processing units and memory. However, previous work mainly focused on shallow GCNs and has shown limited performance with deep GCNs. In this paper, we present Dancer, an innovative PIM-based GCN accelerator. Dancer optimizes data movement during the inference process, significantly improving efficiency and reducing energy consumption. Specifically, we introduce a novel compressed graph storage architecture and a dynamic quantization technique to minimize data transfers at each layer of the GCN. Additionally, through a detailed analysis of weight dynamics changes, we propose a sparsity propagation strategy to further alleviate the computational and data transfer burden between layers. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to current state-of-the-art methods, Dancer achieves 3.7× speedup, 7.6× energy efficiency, and reduces of 9.6× DRAM access on average. © 2025 EDAA.

The resource scheduling of the container cloud system can be handled as a path planning problem. In response to the need for container resource scheduling that comprehensively considers the interests of users and service providers, this paper combines user quality of service (QoS) models and resource load balancing to study multi-objective container resource scheduling solutions, and proposes an improved Dynamic Adaptive Differential Evolution Algorithm (DADE), which adds adaptive changes to the mutation factor and crossover factor, and optimizes the mutation strategy and selection strategy, so that the algorithm has a broad solution space in the early stage;and a small-scale local search is carried out in the later stage, the resource scheduling strategy based on this algorithm is realized. Perform simulation experiments on the proposed algorithm and scheduling strategy. Experimental results show that the DADE algorithm is superior to mainstream heuristic algorithms in the evaluation of average function evaluation times, solution accuracy, convergence speed and other indicators. The resource scheduling effect has obvious advantages in task completion time, completion cost and resource load balancing. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The local community detection (LCD) method can discover the local community structure in which the seed node is located. Compared with global community detection, local community detection is characterized by its low cost and high efficiency. However, most existing LCD methods only return a non-overlapping community. Individuals in the real world may participate in multiple communities, which can only be discovered by using overlapping local community detection methods. In this study, an overlapping local community detection algorithm based on modularity and node transitivity. First, the scope and structure information of the overlapping communities are obtained according to the node transitivity. Second, NMF is used to obtain the number of overlapping communities. Finally, the local modularity density based on edge weights is used to refine the detected local communities. The experimental results validate the high performance of our method to the other method in comparison. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The development of learning analytics technology has created the necessary conditions for the implementation of large-scale personalized education. By taking advantage of the current advancements available, we can adopt a deep integration of 'artificial intelligence + education', take educational big data as the research object, aim at achieving precise teaching, and use cognitive diagnosis as a means to construct an intelligent guidance model. The model will conform to a learner's cognitive patterns and curriculum characteristics to meet his personalized learning needs under different knowledge states. Firstly, use knowledge map and abstract syntax trees to extract the characteristics of teaching objectives from questions and standard programing codes. Secondly, Use 'target characteristics - learning characteristics - learning sequence - learning effect' cognitive diagnosis model to assess student achievement in learning. Finally, according to the correlation between knowledge points, the initial learning path consisting of all relevant knowledge points is identified from a knowledge map. And the most optimal learning path is selected based on the importance of knowledge points and student's learning situation. There are three innovation points in this paper. First, the traditional method which only focuses on discovering the one-dimensional knowledge features implicated in the questions, is extended to construct a knowledge-ability multidimensional feature matrix. Secondly, it optimized static cognitive diagnosis into dynamic cognitive arbitrariness, which has a modeling capability of dynamic temporal sequence. Thirdly, it regarded the correlation between knowledge points, and the importance of knowledge points as the heuristic conditions for constructing a learning path. © 2023 IEEE.

Interlaced Magnetic Recording (IMR), a technology that improves storage density through track overlap, introduces significant latency due to Read-Modify-Write (RMW) operations. Writing to overlapped tracks affects underlying tracks, requiring additional I/O operations to read, back up, and rewrite them, resulting in significant head movement latency. We propose EF-IMR, a new architecture that ensures crash consistency in IMR while minimizing RMW latency and head movement. EF-IMR reduces head movement during RMW operations and decreases redundant RMW operations. Evaluations under real-world, intensive I/O workloads show that EF-IMR reduces RMW latency by 20.11 % and head movement latency by 89.37% compared to existing methods. © 2025 EDAA.

Container technology becomes increasingly popular in public cloud platforms. Although many Container Auto-Scaling Algorithms (CASAs) have been proposed recently, there is still a lack of standardized frameworks to evaluate them comprehensively. This paper proposes a comprehensive evaluation method for CASAs. We firstly proposed a set of CASA evaluation metrics considering the requirements of cloud provider and user, and then designed a test data set based on real-world system load traces and 6 workload patterns. Experiments on some representative CASAs are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed evaluation method. Our research can provide cloud providers, operators and users with more comprehensive and systematic information about CASAs. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The rise of biometric security changes how users make decisions about their privacy. As passwords give way to faces and fingerprints, the algorithmic nature of these processes creates new cognitive labor for users. When biometrics are used in spaces of algorithmic management, workers must negotiate tradeoffs between security, privacy, fairness, and their livelihood. A mixed-methods, human-centered research design paired with theory frameworks from algorithmic management, usable security, and algorithmic fairness illuminates how workers navigate facial recognition at the level of local practice. As AI/ML technologies for management and security become increasingly interwoven, the implications of this research are significant. © 2020 Owner/Author.

Multiple methods have been used to study how social values and ethics are implicated in technology design and use, including empirical qualitative studies of technologists' work. Recently, more experimental approaches such as design fction explore these themes through fctional worldbuilding. This paper combines these approaches by adapting design fctions as a form of memoing, a qualitative analysis technique. The paper uses design fction memos to analyze and refect on ethnographic interviews and observational data about how user experience (UX) professionals at large technology companies engage with values and ethical issues in their work. The design fctions help explore and articulate themes about the values work practices and relationships of power that UX professionals grapple with. Through these fctions, the paper contributes a case study showing how design fction can be used for qualitative analysis, and provides insights into the role of organizational and power dynamics in UX professionals' values work. © 2021 acm.
