With rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) impacting human health and wellbeing, scholarly discourse should focus equally on the prospective opportunities and harms of Human-AI Interaction (HAI) in computer-supported Collaborative work and social computing (CSCW). This panel invites critical interdisciplinary discussion around the (un)designing of AI by asking: how, when, where, and why should AI (not) be involved in sociotechnical systems for mental and spiritual health and wellbeing? Motivated by functional, technical, and ethical concerns, the panel aims to ensure that: (1) progress in HAI for mental and spiritual health is informed by expertise from the respective clinical disciplines;(2) ethical and responsible design principles lie at the core of research motivations and methodologies;and (3) AI hype can be tempered by caution given its impacts on marginalized and stigmatized groups. A panel of respected experts in mental health, spiritual care, and AI will discuss CSCW topics regarding HAI in contexts of clinical practice (e.g., electronic health records, patient portals, decision-making and referral systems, technology-supported interactions during bedside care or clinical appointments) as well as social contexts beyond the clinic (e.g., social apps, online health communities and social media, and computer-mediated communication in spiritual/religious groups). © 2024 Owner/Author.

The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) has brought both excitement and concerns to social computing research. On the one hand, LLMs offer unprecedented capabilities in analyzing vast amounts of textual data and generating human-like responses, enabling researchers to delve into complex social phenomena. On the other hand, concerns are emerging regarding the validity, privacy, and ethics of the research when LLMs are involved. This SIG aims at offering an open space for social computing researchers who are interested in understanding the impacts of LLMs to discuss their current practices, perspectives, challenges when engaging with LLMs in their everyday work and collectively shaping the emerging norms of using LLMs in social computing research. © 2023 Owner/Author.

COVID-19 lockdowns accelerated user adoption of remote collaboration technologies such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Despite the challenges of working remotely, many knowledge workers still desire the flexibility of hybrid work and its personal benefits allowing for more productive individual work. However, return-to-office (RTO) mandates suggest an inclination that in-office work allows for more productive teamwork. To resolve these conflicting desires, workspace VR was created. Unlike other social telework virtual reality (VR) applications, workspace VR enables uncoordinated, social, collaborative, and productive individual work and teamwork via virtual avatars, workspaces, and integration with user computers. Designed for Meta Quest devices, users can feel like they are working together with others without constraints in workspace VR. © 2023 acm.

Peer review plays a critical role in scientific research, serving as a benchmark in assessing the quality and rigor of research papers. Publishing peer-reviewed research is also important due to its role in employment and promotion decision-making. Many fields and disciplines, however, are facing increasing challenges around peer review, and conferences and journals are struggling to find enough reviewers for the steadily increasing number of submissions and to ensure reviews are high quality. This panel features five SIGCHI members who have served in various administrative roles related to peer review. The CSCW community has been active in designing, implementing, and evaluating novel social computing systems. In recent years, there has been a rise in using AI to empower social interactions and the capabilities of these systems. While these implementations charge ahead of the establishment of ethical and legal frameworks, it is timely to reflect on the state of AI-powered social computing systems and to identify new research agendas for the community. This Special Interest Group aims to bring in researchers and practitioners from different fields to foster discussions on the key considerations and challenges in designing for AI-powered social computing systems and to promote opportunities for new research collaborations. © 2023 acm.

Historically, the Black church has played a pivotal role in civic engagement and social justice, and continues to do so today. Yet, few researchers have explored how decisions around technology use are made in the church. To address this gap, we conducted semi-structured interviews with five Black church leaders to understand how church leaders interact with digital technologies, both in general and specifically with the communities that they serve. We found that while Black Church leaders are eager to engage with technology, most of the engagement with outside communities is through in-person contact;opportunities to give online have a financial penalty in comparison to traditional methods of tithing and donating;lastly, technology use within outreach and ministries is highly dependent by ministry leaders - many whom volunteer their time. We contribute to research that focuses on technology use in religious organizations and community engagement of community-based organizations. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Ambiguity is gaining attention in self-tracking research as a means to go beyond the mere quantification of body signals. Recent research has suggested that ambiguity can be used even to enable social connection mediated by personal data. To explore this design space more widely, we organized two design workshops with a total of 67 participants. In this paper, we present three design concepts, as outcomes of the workshops, which use ambiguity to enable social self-tracking practices. We then discuss how these concepts demonstrate the potential of ambiguity to encourage collective sense-making, directly impact the user's social relationships, and offer multifaceted perspectives on reality. © 2023 acm.

This SIG invites interdisciplinary researchers in ethics, computing, and the arts;data professionals;and arts practitioners into a collective reflection on how these disciplines can work together to mitigate algorithmic harm. As we explore this topic, we recognize the historical and current marginalization of artistic disciplines in terms of credit and funding, and bring into our discussion consideration not only of what computing and data professions can gain from the arts, but of what artistic disciplines can gain from working with computing and data professions guided by the shared goal of mitigating algorithmic harm. This SIG invites reflection on how arts-based methods can help answer the following questions: (1) What agency and responsibility do data professionals as individuals have for mitigating algorithmic harm in their day-to-day workflows? (2) How does a data professional's individual agency and responsibility relate to collectives (e.g., institutions, groups of colleagues, families, employers, etc.) that they are a part of? (3) What agency and responsibility do collectives have for mitigating algorithmic harm? (4) What can artistic disciplines gain from working with computing and data professions to mitigate algorithmic harm? During this SIG, we will introduce the necessary disciplinary contexts for our collective discussion, facilitate a movement improvisation score that we developed called ''On The Perils of Poorly Chosen Sorting Algorithms'', and facilitate reflective discussion around how arts-based methods can invite data professionals to imagine new data workflows that mitigate algorithmic harm. © 2024 acm.

Hospital teachers are state-employed educators who provide K-12 instruction to children in the hospital. We conducted research to understand how technology is used in hospital classrooms, an area which has been relatively underexplored. We conducted semi-structured interviews with five hospital teachers to understand their experience of using technology in and outside the classroom. Our findings revealed that hospital teachers often rely on older curricula given the changing education atmosphere;learning is often assessed through in-classroom observations of mastery;and technology and internet use by students is often restricted, which may inhibit opportunities to use AI and other technical resources in the classroom. We contribute a deeper understanding of technology use in the hospital classroom. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Scholars, politicians, and journalists have raised alarm over the potential for AI-generated photos, video, and audio - often referred to as deepfakes - to reduce trust in one another and our institutions. Despite these clarion calls, little empirical work exists on how deepfakes are being used to harm individuals outside of non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII). This research provides a preliminary analysis of 50 wide-ranging incidents of deepfake harm. We find that the most common types of harm are relational, systemic, financial, and emotional. Apart from AI-generated NCII, the most prevalent uses of deepfakes to cause harm were instances of mis- and disinformation, fraud, and misrepresentation of or stereotyping about marginalized groups (e.g., women and racial minorities). We concluded with recommendations for future work and discuss potential challenges in identifying, quantifying, and preventing harm caused by deepfakes both online and off. © 2024 Owner/Author.
