In this paper we explore the possibility to leverage the emerging social VR platforms in hopes of addressing the limitations in prior work concerning design technologies to support Long Distance Relationships. Using 650 social media posts and comments, we present three themes emerging in long distance couples' experiences of social VR applications. This study represents our first endeavor to explore how engaging with social VR affects some of the deepest and most meaningful aspects of human experiences such as romantic relationships and emotional connections, so as to inform the design of more socially and emotionally satisfactory VR systems in the future.

In a one-to-many mixed reality collaboration environment, where multiple local users wearing AR headsets are supervised by a remote expert wearing a VR HMD, we evaluated three view-sharing techniques: 2D video, 360 video, and 3D model augmented with 2D video. Through a pilot test, the weaknesses of the techniques were identified, and additional features were integrated into them. Then, their performances were compared in two different collaboration scenarios based on search and assembling. In the first scenario, a local user performed both search and assembling. In the second scenario, two local users had dedicated roles, one for search and the other for assembling. The experiment results showed that the 3D model augmented with 2D video was time-efficient, usable, less demanding and most preferred in one-to-many mixed reality collaborations.

Animal shelters generate an enormous amount of data and require extensive information and communication management, however very little focus has been given to this field through the CSCW lens. The aim of this autoethnographic study is to portray the different events and resulting artifacts from daily shelter tasks using a combination of workflow modeling and customer journey mapping techniques. The Shelter Touchpoint workflow sheds light on unique trends in the collaborative environment of animal welfare. Thus, demonstrating room for the CSCW community to help develop solutions to alleviate shortcomings of legacy technology and other tools that have been adapted to fit into their daily tasks. The two specific insights we are examining are the data fragmentation and siloing of information about an animal, as well as the contribution of social media to compassion fatigue.

With the development and application of cloud computing, the increasing amount of data centers has resulted in huge energy consumption and severe environmental problems. Improving the energy efficiency of data centers has become a necessity. In this paper, in order to improve the energy efficiency of both IT and cooling systems for data centers, a model-free deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based joint optimization approach MACEEC is proposed. To improve the cooperation between IT and cooling system while handling the high-dimensional state space and the large hybrid discrete-continuous action space, a hybrid AC-DDPG multi-agent structure is developed. A scheduling baseline comparison method is proposed to enhance the stability of the architecture. And an asynchronous control optimization algorithm is developed to solve the different responding time issue between IT and cooling system. Experiments based on real-world traces data validate that MACEEC can effectively improve the overall energy efficiency for data centers while ensuring the temperature constraint and service quality compared with existing joint optimization approaches. © 2020 acm.

The work of bilingual parent-education liaisons: Assembling information patchworks for immigrant parents

In this paper, we examine the information work that bilingual parent-education liaisons perform to create connections towards assisting immigrant parents in the United States. As part of formal and informal educational institutions, liaisons operate between different social worlds—within and beyond the domain of education—to maximize immigrant parents’ engagement in their children’s academic lives. Drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork with low-income Latino immigrants and their liaisons, we explore how liaisons leverage technology, content, and people to align these worlds;bringing them closer to mutual understanding. We borrow inspiration from the analytical lens of seams suggested by Vertesi to explore how liaisons manage the "seams" between worlds. This analysis provides a rich and unique perspective of the work that successfully engages immigrant parents with their children’s education, as well as the tensions that challenge that engagement. This understanding of the work that liaisons do with and across seams provides insights to inform design directions for technology that could facilitate and amplify their efforts. Finally, we highlight how exploring the seams that liaisons work with can inform the field of computer-supported Collaborative work (CSCW) on the role of technology in mediation. © 2018 Association for computing Machinery.

With the economic and social development and the substantial improvement of material conditions, the generation of domestic waste has grown rapidly and has become a constraint factor for the development of new urbanization. In the past few years, research on the domestic waste industry has been limited to intelligent waste sorting, neglecting the role of intelligent management of waste storage sites. To relieve it, We propose a deep learning-based multi-task network for intelligent management of garbage deposit points, which combines algorithms such as YoloV5,Deepsort, Insightface, and Openpose to achieve waste bin detection, waste bin status recognition and analysis, face recognition, action recognition, and multiple object tracking based on real-time surveillance video. Besides, we propose a new dataset named Waste Bin Status, which provides a meaningful addition to the existing field of waste bin identification. Experiments on WBS dataset validate that our method is superior to other methods for garbage point status identification. Moreover, our network is trained to work with different scenarios of garbage deposits, demonstrating state-of-the-art performance in real-world tests. © 2021 IEEE.

Reductions constitute a frequent algorithmic pattern in high-performance and scientific computing. Sophisticated techniques are needed to ensure their correct and scalable concurrent execution on modern processors. Reductions on large arrays represent the most demanding case where traditional approaches are not always applicable due to low performance scalability. To address these challenges, we propose RICH, a runtime-assisted solution that relies on architectural and parallel programming model extensions. RICH updates the reduction variable directly in the cache hierarchy with the help of added in-cache functional units. Our programming model extensions fit with the most relevant parallel programming solutions for shared memory environments like OpenMP. RICH does not modify the ISA, which allows the use of algorithms with reductions from pre-compiled external libraries. Experiments show that our solution achieves the performance improvements of 11.2% on average, compared to the state-of-the-art hardware-based approaches, while it introduces 2.4% area and 3.8% power overhead. © 2020 acm.

Urban cycling is often a solitary pursuit, as many cities do not provide infrastructure to facilitate social cycling, such as protected bike lanes. Negotiating congested streets can be stressful, even under the best conditions. The challenges of obstacle avoidance are amplified at night, when reduced visibility increases the risk of collision. In order to promote social cycling at night, we introduce [Bike] Swarm. Inspired by the natural synchrony emerging in swarms of nocturnal insects such as crickets and fireflies, [Bike] Swarm automatically inducts cyclists into a collective of nearby riders. A removable sheath of white LED illuminators is attached to the bicycle frame, providing a baseline level of illumination. When cyclists enter a 5-meter radius of other [Bike] Swarm riders, their bicycle lights begin pulsating in unison, creating a visually unified presence and extending membership in a self-organizing community that is increasing safety cooperatively.

While the shift to on-demand labor may foster greater control over one's employment in some ways, it has removed much of the benefits that come with consistently working in shared physical spaces. working in physical spaces allow opportunities for social support, long-term growth, and stability. The goal of this workshop is to facilitate a discussion around how physical spaces and online technologies influence each other in on-demand work. We plan to invite a diverse group of stakeholders, including researchers studying these topics, grassroots organizers who can represent and voice the concerns of their respective worker communities, and designers of on-demand work platforms. Discussion and ideas generated from this workshop will be archived online and made available to the larger research community and the general public.
