In this report, we review our early steps in leveraging the promise of Artificial Intelligence to potentially create more inclusive co-design experiences for marginalized populations. We discuss our research agenda and the first phases where we utilized Wizard of Oz prototypes to engage participants in an online co-design environment. We found that the types of interactions between the facilitator and participant determined the amount of engagement with the co-design process. © 2019 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

As people increasingly innovate outside of formal R&D departments, individuals take on the responsibility of attracting, managing, and protecting social, financial, human, and information capital. With internet technology playing a central role in how individuals work together to produce something that they could not produce alone, it is necessary to understand how technologies are shaping the innovation process from start to finish. We bring together human-computer interaction researchers and industry leaders who have worked with people and platforms designed to support collective innovation across diverse domains. We will discuss the current and future research on the role of platforms in collective innovation, including topics in social computing, crowdsourcing, peer production, online communities, gig economy, & online marketplaces.

In this paper, I show the under heard voices of those whose primary media is radio, the proliferation of large trend analysis over fine-grained exploratory tools for large scale media data, and the absence of exploratory tools for hyper local media like local radio. In response, I present RadioSilenced, a web based tool that enables the semi-serendipitous (not algorithmically curated) exploration and display of talk radio call-in data to encourage a deeper understanding of the 10 percent of US communities whose primary news consumption is radio, in a whole-system view but sample-by-sample exploration closer to ethnographic observation than a more reductive, big data analysis. To my knowledge, large scale analysis of talk radio, one of the oldest forms of media, has rarely been attempted.

Studying abroad and adjusting to a new environment can be very stressful for non-native English-speaking international students due to challenges of language and culture. Previous research shows that computer-mediated communication (CMC) tools have the potential to help newcomers adjust to new environments. However, it is not clear what the role of communication tools is in newcomer international students' adaptation to the US. We conducted 17 semi-structured interviews with international students from China, Korea, and Japan to understand their adjustment challenges and how they use CMC tools to address them. We found that international students use CMC tools for finding reliable information, building new social networks, and providing an alternative channel for engaging in the US classroom. Based on these findings, we propose design implications for tools to better support international students' adjustment to the US.

The testing of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) has become increasingly important as DNNs are widely adopted by safety critical systems. While many test adequacy criteria have been suggested, automated test input generation for many types of DNNs remains a challenge because the raw input space is too large to randomly sample or to navigate and search for plausible inputs. Consequently, current testing techniques for DNNs depend on small local perturbations to existing inputs, based on the metamorphic testing principle. We propose new ways to search not over the entire image space, but rather over a plausible input space that resembles the true training distribution. This space is constructed using Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), and navigated through their latent vector space. We show that this space helps efficiently produce test inputs that can reveal information about the robustness of DNNs when dealing with realistic tests, opening the field to meaningful exploration through the space of highly structured images. © 2020 acm.

Of all the countries that belong to OCDE, the Latin American countries have the highest levels of inequality. Chile is among them, with scores similar to Bolivia and Guatemala [10]. Also, the number of women living in poverty is higher than that of men [4]. Women’s economic context is essential for their families, as 90% of single-parent families are supported by women [12]. One way of achieving economic development may be choosing a career in technology, as tech jobs are among the highest-paid in the country [9]. Also, they are flexible, allowing women to balance work and family, and have been proven to promote social mobility and country economic growth [2, 7]. However, there is a well-known gender gap in technology; for example, only 24% of computer science students are women in Chile [9]. To inspire women to have a computer science career, interventions should be undertaken while they are girls, by addressing stereotypes that influence their attitude towards technology [6]. These stereotypes are influenced by the context in which girls grow [5]; in particular their socio-economic context [3]. Therefore, it may be essential to understand the context of girls, and their thoughts towards tech stereotypes, to create better computer science education interventions. We conducted a preliminary interview study with sixth grade girls, since at this age, stereotypes can still be challenged [1, 11], while the opportunities to challenge stereotypes decrease from the eighth grade on [8]. The research question of this study is whether there are different stereotypes regarding technology among girls with different socio-economical levels. It has been hypothesized that there will be different stereotypes among these girls. Twelve interviews were done: 6 with girls from low vulnerability contexts, and 6 with girls from high vulnerability contexts. There has been a growing commitment across the fields of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) and Human-computer Interaction for Development (HCI4D) towards investigating the design and deployment of technologies in the context of complex healthcare ecologies. We present a qualitative inquiry of one such context, as we examine the outreach practices and everyday challenges of workers at a community-based organization in Gujarat (India) that works with People Living with the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (PLHIV). Drawing on Yosso’s framework of community cultural wealth—apt for such intersectional settings—and the lens of articulation work, we describe how the workers at Vikas build and strengthen varied forms of capital to restore "old normals," or what life was like for their PLHIV clients prior to diagnoses. Finally, we propose that attention to this nature of restoration work, and the workers’ engagement with diverse forms of community cultural wealth, allows us to reflect on how technologies might (or might not) be designed to impact social and affective aspects of health. © 2019 Association for computing Machinery.

The US maternal mortality is double that of the UK and Canada and still rising. This is a public health crisis, and draws our attention to systemic issues with US health care, as maternal mortality is a core statistic used to indicate health care quality. Responding to the increasing number of women dying during one of the most common experiences with the medical system will require organizing a diverse group of stakeholders over a long period of time. Due to the unevenly distributed nature of the crisis, with Black women 243% more likely to die in childbirth or from childbirth-related causes will also require us to incorporate underrepresented voices into the current system. To examine these issues, we conducted interviews with public health experts working to address maternal mortality. We found that articulation work practices in public health limit the ability of experts to initiate contact with the very stakeholders they need to build relationships with to address the rise in maternal mortality.

Twiter has become a prominent platform for world leaders to communicate with the public. As an exploratory analysis, we investigate its use by nine heads of state across the democracy index. Using a frequency analysis from qualitative coding, we did not find significant diferences in Twiter use among leaders of democratic and authoritarian regimes, except when it comes to condemning others, requesting cooperation, or discussing the environment. We also find some indication that leaders of 'flawed democratic governments,' particularly Donald Trump, have communication paterns via Twiter similar to those of populist states. © 2019 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s).

In this paper, we propose the designs for two apps that benefit pediatric patients with asthma. We discuss the current state of the field through results from a survey of published apps related to asthma. We observed several key gaps that were unfilled and use these results to derive a set of requirements for a new app design. We describe two different designs that meet these requirements. The apps are designed to collect health metrics and educate kids aged 7 - 12 years through gameplay in two different contexts, at home and in hospital Emergency Departments (ED).
