Equipped with more convenient facilities and features, online social networks have become the most popular platform for people's communication. It is increasingly important to model information propagation in such networks. Most of the state-of-the-art algorithms of information diffusion model focus on individual-level diffusion and does not consider the impact of social relations on user's expression, making them either unable to uncover diffusion patterns accurately or unable to capture dynamically changing topics of text stream in social networks. To address these issues, we proposed a dynamic community-level diffusion model (DCDM) in this paper to capture diffusion patterns based on coordinated dynamic semantic analysis by multiple topic-word distribution and structure analysis. Comparative experiments are conducted on the real dataset from Tweet. Experimental results show our diffusion model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. © 2019 IEEE.

People with health concerns go to online health support groups to obtain help and advice. To do so, they frequently disclose personal details, many times in public. Although research in non-health settings suggests that people self-disclose less in public than in private, this pattern may not apply to health support groups where people want to get relevant help. Our work examines how the use of private and public channels infuences members' self-disclosure in an online cancer support group, and how channels moderate the infuence of self-disclosure on reciprocity and receiving support. By automatically measuring people's self-disclosure at scale, we found that members of cancer support groups revealed more negative self-disclosure in the public channels compared to the private channels. Although one's self-disclosure leads others to self-disclose and to provide support, these efects were generally stronger in the private channel. These channel efects probably occur because the public channels are the primary venue for support exchange, while the private channels are mainly used for follow-up conversations. We discuss theoretical and practical implications of our work. © 2019 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

social computing platforms (e.g., Facebook and Twitter) offer ways for youth activist groups to engage in civic action. However, it is challenging for youth activists to collaboratively leverage their networks and strategically engage in collective action online. Therefore, tools are needed to help these groups to better understand and leverage the resources available to them online for creating public engagement around issues of their interest. In my thesis, I want to explore how interactive social network visualizations can help youth activist groups to identify as a group online and to enhance their collective efficacy at engaging in collective action online.

The Iterated Prisoner’s Dilemma has guided research on social dilemmas for decades. However, it distinguishes between only two atomic actions: cooperate and defect. In real-world prisoner’s dilemmas, these choices are temporally extended and different strategies may correspond to sequences of actions, reflecting grades of cooperation. We introduce a Sequential Prisoner’s Dilemma (SPD) game to better capture the aforementioned characteristics. In this work, we propose a deep multiagent reinforcement-learning approach that investigates the evolution of mutual cooperation in SPD games. Our approach consists of two phases. The first phase is offline: it synthesizes policies with different cooperation degrees and then trains a cooperation degree detection network. The second phase is online: an agent adaptively selects its policy based on the detected degree of opponent cooperation. The effectiveness of our approach is demonstrated in two representative SPD 2D games: the Apple-Pear game and the Fruit Gathering game. Experimental results show that our strategy can avoid being exploited by exploitative opponents and achieve cooperation with cooperative opponents. © 2019 Association for computing Machinery.

Machine translation is often not enough for people to engage across languages due to translation errors and lack of cultural background. In addressing these challenges, my dissertation explores how AI-augmented analytics can improve computer-mediated communication between speakers of different native languages. First, to support better sense making of foreign language posts in social media, I designed SenseTrans, a tool that adds contextual information using AI-analytics such as sentiment analysis. In my future work, I intend to explore 1) how people perceive, interpret and make use of AI-generated information, and 2) how AI-augmented analytics could be applied to other settings.

This workshop addresses the changing nature of work and the important role of exchange platforms as both intermediaries and managers. It aims to bring together interdisciplinary and critical scholars working on the power dynamics of digitally mediated labor. By doing so, the workshop provides a forum for discussing current and future research opportunities on the digital economy, including the sharing economy, the platform economy, the gig economy, and other adjacent framings. Of particular interest to this workshop is the intersection between worker and provider subjectivities and the roles platforms take in managing work through algorithms and software. Our one-day workshop accommodates up to 20 participants.

In theatrical performance practices, actors are stressed once practice stops due to occurring mistakes. Our goal is to reduce the number of mistakes occurring in the theatrical performance practice by cuing the action order. We introduce a cuing system which uses tactile cues through vibrations and notifies actors of the turn of actions. We also reported the user study of the system. The results of the study suggested that the task-order coordination by the cuing system may be used not only for theatrical performance practices, but also for other real-time collaborative works with serial tasks.

The mark of a successful academic conference is the sustained discussion and engagement that continues long after the closing session. For key event takeaways and action planning to have resonance, attendees need a means of amplifying and further edifying their shared ideas and sense of purpose. We present the Manifesto Machine, a collaborative writing environment for drafting and designing manifestos, and for encouraging active discussion and engagement around the topics that affect us. In this integrated demonstration, we position the Manifesto Machine as a thought probe for provoking critical self-reflection in the field of technology design, and for piecing together and making explicit a collaborative new vision of living and working together in the digital age.

As the extension of cloud computing, multi-access edge computing (MEC) can better support applications to accomplish larger tasks. Existing works on energy optimization of MEC systems fail to utilize multi-relay diversity, which plays a vital role to reduce the computing power consumption of mobile devices by leveraging different offloading modes. In this paper, we propose a novel computing architecture with multi-source, multi-relay, and a single edge server in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA) wireless network. The application task on a mobile device can be calculated locally, offloaded to the relay device and completed on the relay device, offloaded to the edge server directly or via a relay device with cooperative communication and executed in the edge server. The two optimization targets are total energy consumption minimization problem, and maximum energy consumption per source-relay pair devices minimization problem. For the first sub-problem, we design an optimal total energy consumption algorithm (OTCA) based on bipartite matching. The optimal energy consumption assignment algorithm (OECAA) is designed for the second sub-problem with an approximation ratio of (1+ϵ). Extensive simulation results show that OTCA outperforms random algorithm by 53.14% on the reduction of total energy consumption, and algorithm OECAA outperforms OTCA by 30.58% on the reduction of maximum energy consumption per source-relay pair devices. © 2019 IEEE.
