How might the content and outcomes of tertiary education programmes be described and analysed in order to understand how they are structured and function? To address this question we develop a framework for modelling graduate competencies linked to tertiary degree programmes in the computing disciplines. While the focus of our work is computing the framework is applicable to education more broadly. The work presented here draws upon the pioneering curricular document for information technology (IT2017), curricular competency frameworks, other related documents such as the software engineering competency model (SWECOM), the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA), current research in competency models, and elicitation workshop results from recent computing conferences. The aim is to inform the ongoing computing Curricula (CC2020) project, an endeavour supported by the Association for computing Machinery (acm) and the IEEE computer Society. We develop the Competency Learning Framework (CoLeaF), providing an internationally relevant tool for describing competencies. We argue that this competency based approach is well suited for constructing learning environments and assists degree programme architects in dealing with the challenge of developing, describing and including competencies relevant to computer and IT professionals. In this paper we demonstrate how the CoLeaF competency framework can be applied in practice, and though a series of case studies demonstrate its effectiveness and analytical power as a tool for describing and comparing degree programmes in the international higher education landscape.

In-between 2016 and 2017 a new hospital information system (HIS) was introduced at several hospitals in Denmark radically changing the core work practices for a majority of the healthcare professionals. Promptly, the new HIS began to receive criticism from healthcare professionals for failing to live up to proclaimed expectations. To fully understand the problems experienced by the healthcare professionals we need to understand the fundamental nature of the work prior to the implementation. In this paper, we investigate patient consultations as they were performed prior to the implementation of the HIS at an oncology department. Reporting from a 1.5 year-long study, we find patient consultations were organized in three sequential activities: review, interaction, and documentation. Further, we find that the dictaphone served as a key artifact allowing physicians to enact flexibility in documentation while simultaneously providing them with the capability to communicate and coordinate with the medical secretaries. Our empirical findings suggest that the medical secretaries are critical for structured documentation of variations in health data and are the cornerstones that allow physicians to enact sentimental efforts when interacting with patients. These insights prove important in understanding the criticism aimed at the new HIS implementation since the implementation removed the dictaphone as a key artifact and instead introduced a new organizational structure where documentation was assumed accomplished in parallel with patient interaction. The transformation consequently shifted work, previously performed by the medical secretaries, to the physicians.

On the background of Emerging Engineering Education (3E) in China, it has been an important topic in school-enterprise collaboration in software engineering education. In this paper, our outcome-based school-enterprise cooperative software engineering training is proposed to increase student engagement of engineering practice, and address some real complicated engineering issue. Contributions of our method are project-driven agile practice using pair programming and extreme programming, school-enterprise collaboration to address complicated engineering issues, and outcome-based encouragement to formulate a case library. Finally, complete, time estimation and quality of work order, and detailed survey and feedbacks of students are analyzed to illustrate the effect of our software engineering training. © 2018 Association for computing Machinery.

As interest in cryptocurrency has increased, problems have arisen with Proof-of-work (PoW) and Proof-of-Stake (PoS) methods, the most representative methods of acquiring cryptocurrency in a blockchain. The PoW method is uneconomical and the PoS method can be easily monopolized by a few people. To cope with this issue, this paper introduces a Proof-of-Probability (PoP) method. The PoP is a method where each node sorts the encrypted actual hash as well as a number of fake hash, and then the first node to decrypt actual hash creates block. In addition, a wait time is used when decrypting one hash and then decrypting the next hash for restricting the excessive computing power competition. In addition, the centralization by validaters with many stakes can be avoided in the proposed PoP method. © 2018 Association for computing Machinery.

Computational research and data analytics increasingly relies on complex ecosystems of open source software (OSS) "libraries" - curated collections of reusable code that programmers import to perform a specific task. Software documentation for these libraries is crucial in helping programmers/analysts know what libraries are available and how to use them. Yet documentation for open source software libraries is widely considered low-quality. This article is a collaboration between CSCW researchers and contributors to data analytics OSS libraries, based on ethnographic fieldwork and qualitative interviews. We examine several issues around the formats, practices, and challenges around documentation in these largely volunteer-based projects. There are many different kinds and formats of documentation that exist around such libraries, which play a variety of educational, promotional, and organizational roles. The work behind documentation is similarly multifaceted, including writing, reviewing, maintaining, and organizing documentation. Different aspects of documentation work require contributors to have different sets of skills and overcome various social and technical barriers. Finally, most of our interviewees do not report high levels of intrinsic enjoyment for doing documentation work (compared to writing code). Their motivation is affected by personal and project-specific factors, such as the perceived level of credit for doing documentation work versus more 'technical' tasks like adding new features or fixing bugs. In studying documentation work for data analytics OSS libraries, we gain a new window into the changing practices of data-intensive research, as well as help practitioners better understand how to support this often invisible and infrastructural work in their projects.

The importance of social media usage during crisis has been well established in academic and practitioner communities. Yet, the promise of rendering insights from social media for responders in a consistent and reliable manner remains a challenge and accepted standards of practice have yet to emerge. Inspired by a May 2017 workshop consisting of 15 Crisis Informatics practitioners from 3 continents, we imagine a training curriculum aimed at developing the necessary skills to harness social media data during a crisis. We call the recipients of that training Crisis Informatics Research Technicians (CIRT). We offer this design fiction to stimulate a conversation among Crisis Informatics scholars, Human-computer Interaction scholars, crisis response professionals, and the public on best practices, tools, limitations, and ethics of using social media to improve crisis response.

Critical design is gaining momentum in interaction design, yet little CSCW research has focused on articulating the cooperative potentials of critical design artefacts. We address this gap by reflecting upon a design project aimed at overturning the prevailing narrative regarding dyslexia in Italy. The adversarial propositions embedded in our critical design artefacts challenged the description of dyslexia as a learning disorder putting forward the view of a learning difference. These artefacts demonstrated their capacity to bridge heterogeneous social worlds (those of teachers, children, and parents) into one cooperative entity and mobilise cooperative activism. The contribution to CSCW is two-fold. Firstly, we introduce the cooperative potentials of critical design artefacts;secondly, we propose critical design as a strategy for researchers engaging with cooperative activism.

On-time completion is one of critical QoS (Quality of Service) measurements for massive time-constrained business processes executing in the cloud environment. However, temporal violations inevitably occur during the execution of business workflows due to the uncertainty and dynamic nature of cloud environment. To realize the goal of the target on-time completion rate, workflow temporal verification is employed for monitoring the execution time of workflow activities and handling time delays before the deadline. While current studies on business cloud workflows temporal verification mainly monitor the execution of workflows with fixed observation time intervals along the system timeline, which can result in huge monitoring cost. To reduce the monitoring cost, this paper presents a sliding-window based dynamic temporal checkpoint selection strategy using propagation-aware throughput temporal consistency model for parallel cloud business workflows. The strategy adjusts the next observation time interval according to the temporal verification result at the previous checkpoint. Experimental results show that our strategy can select fewer temporal checkpoints and violation handling points compared with conventional strategies under the same situations.

social movements use social computing systems to complement offline mobilizations, but prior literature has focused almost exclusively on movement actor's use of social media. In this paper, we analyze participation and attention to topics connected with the Black Lives Matter movement in the English language version of Wikipedia between 2014 and 2016. Our results point to the use of Wikipedia to (1) intensively document and connect historical and contemporary events, (2) collaboratively migrate activity to support coverage of new events, and (3) dynamically re-appraise preexisting knowledge in the aftermath of new events. These findings reveal patterns of behavior that complement theories of collective memory and collective action and help explain how social computing systems can encode and retrieve knowledge about social movements as they unfold.
