Sleep plays a significant role in our health and well-being. We can see an increasing amount of work in HCI exploring the design for better sleep. However, most of these works only focus on sleep tracking and reminding. The social perspective of sleep is rarely explored. We believe that sleep is tightly associated with social connection and intimacy. This work explores how sleep sharing can facilitate social bonding over a distance. We present SleepyFlora, an interactive system that enables a user to know the other user's real-time sleep stages via a flower-shaped installation and augment their sleep by sending soothing aromas and playing music remotely. With SleepyFlora, we hope to further the understanding of interaction design around sleep by considering its social perspective. Moreover, we hope our work can provide a novel approach, i.e, enabling sleep sharing, for facilitating social bonding over a distance. © 2023 acm.

We propose a Special Interest Group (SIG) session during which audience participants will discuss future possible configurations of personal artificial intelligence assistants (PAIAs) and their potential capabilities to interact with other humans and other personal AI assistants. Participants will engage in design fiction and speculative design activities to discuss the boundaries of acceptable roles that personal AI assistants may play in our relationships in the future. The goal is for discussion and activities during the SIG to help attendees think through their own research and design work as it relates to exploring the impact that PAIAs and PAIA-like systems might have on our relationships with others and our relationships with technology. In the introduction to the SIG, we will use design fictions, sci-fi analyses, and short case studies to introduce a broad conceptual playing field that will inspire discussion for the 75-minute session. © 2024 Owner/Author.

We focus on occupational diversity in platform-mediated work. We do so to advance the conceptual and empirical understanding of how occupational structures and related work demands lead to different use cases and design needs by platform workers. Homogenizing diverse occupations into an undifferentiated group and calling them platform workers disguises the specific characteristics and challenges inherent in individual occupations. This creates the false equivalence of treating ridesharing and contract information security work into gigs. To illuminate the nature and characteristic of occupational diversity in mediating platform work experiences, we report interim findings from a comparative analysis of 71 platform workers pursuing online freelance work, classified across five distinct occupational groups. The findings reveal that platform work experiences vary based on three occupational attributes: industry, job, individual. These distinct occupational attributes shape two different platform work experiences: flexibility and skill development. These findings provide a structured means to understand occupational diversity in platform work, informing future research aimed at designing digital labor platform experiences that tailor to the diverse occupational needs and preferences of workers. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) can provide scalable and accessible education at scale. Generally, speech-based tutoring systems interpret the users' long pauses as a signal to take the floor. However, such behavior creates barriers for minority and low-literacy individuals who pause mid-sentence just to finish articulating their thoughts. For them, these systems inappropriately interrupt them, resulting in frustration. In this study, we present a bigram pause detection model that determines whether a pause is occurring in the middle or at the end of a sentence and implemented this model on an ITS (MODIFIED). We also compared the effect of this modification with a baseline ITS that interprets long pauses as the end of a turn (TRADITIONAL). Our results show that participants interacted longer with MODIFIED, and perceive it more human-like than the TRADITIONAL system. We argue that conversational systems need to be designed considering unique needs of their intended interlocutors. © 2024 acm.

In recent years, graph neural networks(GNNs) have been increasingly used in collaborative computing applications such as recommender systems and social networks. GNNs perform message passing, aggregating local neighbors to update node representations, which leads to scalability issues in applications, and they are difficult to deploy in real-world applications. To address this problem, recent approaches use knowledge distillation(KD) to learn to compute efficient multilayer perceptron(MLP) by mimicking the output of GNN. However, existing GNN knowledge distillation methods require an input of specific node location features to capture the structural information of the graph, which limits the knowledge migration from GNN to MLP. Here, we propose a novel framework, GMAE-MLP, that uses representational similarity to bridge the powerful graph representation space of GNN and MLP. We employ the graph mask autoencoder (GMAE) as a structure-aware graph encoder, which is able to represent the local structure of reconstructed mask nodes as meaningful structural features. We then propose a feature similarity-based distillation approach to transfer structural knowledge from GNNs to MLPs adequately. Extensive experiments and analyses demonstrate the superiority of GMAE-MLP, and We achieved state-of-the-art performance for GNN-MLP distillation in four of the five graphical datasets in the transductive setup. We show that GMAE-MLP improves GNNs by an average of 2.95%, MLPs by 26.03%, and the state-of-the-art NOSMOG by 0.95% across 5 datasets in the transductive setting.

Almost thirty years ago, CSCW published an article written by Joan Greenbaum detailing how and why CSCW should consider the framing of "labor"over "work"in researching and designing information systems [17]. This argument is especially salient in the present day, with the increasing wariness of algorithmically-mediated monitoring, surveillance, automation, and management in work processes. Despite its salience, Greenbaum's paper has had relatively low engagement in CSCW so far. As such, this workshop responds to Greenbaum's call-to-action, asking: 1) Where is CSCW research now in thinking about "work"vs. "labor"in designing systems? and 2) How can we support emerging CSCW scholars in grounding themselves in theories of work that includes - if not centers - a labor-oriented economic frame? Following a Freirean pedagogy model of social action involving a cycle of reflection and action, this workshop will aim to generate a critical consciousness around labor issues in CSCW. Ultimately, by crafting individual commitments to labor, this workshop will aim to contribute to a more worker-centered future. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Debates over the use of facial recognition technology (FRT) are intensifying across different countries worldwide. While we can observe an increase in FRT usage driven by governments and industry, various stakeholders are raising important concerns. To contribute to a cooperative discourse on FRTs, in this paper, we first perform an integrative literature review and investigate the advantages, risks, areas of application, and stakeholders. Based on this analysis, we then design and facilitate a multi-stakeholder workshop aimed at cooperatively assessing the technology's impact. workshop findings reveal significant differences in the positions held by stakeholders, indicating differing perspectives on the subject. The results from our study underscore the need for careful impact assessments before deploying FRTs, as well as stakeholder engagement through sustained and well-informed dialogues to cooperatively determine technical feasibility for specific use cases and short- and long-term societal impact. The insights from our research can serve as guidance for future work. We discuss the study's results, provide policy recommendations for the governance of FRTs, and share the framework for a 2.5h stakeholder workshop on the impact of FRTs. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Ensuring user-centered phishing detection is a significant challenge due to the difficulty in distinguishing threats. To address this, we propose a personalized tool - Holistic User-Centered Identification of Threats at the Edge (HUCITE). Our system utilizes probabilistic logic to provide real-time risk estimates for local machines and employs simple cartoons as a user interface. Our approach focuses on identifying anomalies in a single machine and user browsing history for the generation of a personalized green list and global threat information for a shared red list. This approach enables blocking and identification of phishing websites, potentially malicious scripts, unfamiliar domains, and previously unencountered certificate authorities. By creating a zone of safety for a specific user and identifying departures from that zone, our approach addresses the limitations of traditional anomaly detection techniques. We present the underlying architecture and approach to local risk identification, reporting on an in-lab experiment involving 45 participants to test the effectiveness of our system in various stress conditions affecting users' phishing perception. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Access to reproductive care, shaped by legal, socio-economic, political, and identity-based factors, is unevenly distributed and increasingly precarious. This one-day workshop builds on previous CSCW workshops to address the pressing need to confront issues at the intersection of Human-computer Interaction (HCI), design research, and reproductive justice in the face of global conservatism and escalating challenges to human rights. Through speculative design, the workshop invites researchers and practitioners to address challenges in this design space, such as, but not limited to, information distribution, privacy issues, identity-based barriers, and design for care. By pulling on the threads of designed artifacts central to reproductive care and ideating on novel designs and anti-designs, participants will collaborate to formulate design and design research's role in reproductive justice futures. The workshop aims to produce provocative ideas around the messy realities of reproductive justice. We contribute critical discussions and reflections on HCI's role in promoting change and combating the oppressive forces that affect reproductive justice. © 2024 Owner/Author.

When decisions crucial to their lives and well-being are made by opaque automated decision-making (ADM) systems powered by AI technologies, including machine learning and deep learning, individuals often find themselves disempowered. They may be unaware of the existence of such systems or their rights related to ADM, such as those granted by the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and emerging AI regulations. Even when they are aware of the adverse impacts of ADM, numerous barriers - ranging from algorithmic to organizational to regulatory - hinder their ability to exert their rights and maintain agency and control over ADM decisions. My dissertation aims to address this disempowerment by examining how explainability, contestability, and beyond within the ADM ecosystem can empower individuals. Through a combination of qualitative workshops, large-scale user experiments, and interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of human-computer interaction (HCI) and AI governance, this research investigates what empowerment entails at technical, organizational, and societal levels. This paper provides an overview of various streams of my research, contributing to the understanding and addressing of the complexity involved in empowering those affected by ADM. © 2024 Owner/Author.
