In this paper we hope to identify how the typical or standard artificial intelligence development process encourages or facilitates the creation of racialized technologies. We begin by understanding Sylvia Wynter's definition of the biocentric Man genre and its exclusion of Blackness from humanness. We follow this with outlining what we consider to be the typical steps for developing an AI-based technology, which we've broken down into 6 stages: identifying a problem, development process and management tool selection, dataset development and data processing, model development, deployment and risk assessment, and integration and monitoring. The goal of this paper is to better understand how Wynter's biocentric Man is being represented and reinforced by the technologies we are producing in the AI lifecycle and by the lifecycle itself;we hope to identify ways in which the distinction of Blackness from the 'ideal' human leads to perpetual punishment at the hands of these technologies. By deconstructing this development process, we can potentially identify ways in which humans in general have not been prioritized and how those affects are disproportionately affecting marginalized people. We hope to offer solutions that will encourage changes in the AI development cycle. © 2023 acm.

Community-collaborative approaches to technology research promise a more just, equitable, and societally impactful future for computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW). But how can we ensure that CSCW builds knowledge with communities as meaningful partners, rather than conducting research activities on them? And what would it take for our research activities to go a step further, with the aim of helping communities work towards alternative social structures and counter harmful structural oppression? With growing interest in community-collaborative approaches (CCA) in CSCW among both academic and industry institutions, it is time to reflect upon the field's history of these forms of engagement to develop pathways for the future. This interactive workshop draws from an expert roundtable featuring CSCW and human-computer interaction (HCI) researchers with a collectively rich wealth of knowledge on enacting, critiquing, and navigating community-based research. Together, we explore the structural challenges of CCA for communities, research institutions, and individual researchers, with an explicit focus on how the values of computing research do and do not align with what is needed for truly community-collaborative work. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

This SIG calls for a global conversation around platform (in)justice. By focusing on the experiences of people residing in the Majority World (also known as Global South), we aim at creating a space for international and interdisciplinary exchange on socio-economically, politically, and culturally sensitive platform design and operation. The following topics motivate the SIG: concerns about equal access, structural discrimination, global inequities, and the desire to find solutions to those challenges. We invite the CSCW community to explore how attention to power relations, colonial residual, geopolitical tensions, and historical specificities can lead us to more sustainable and just platform designs. Through our SIG, we aspire to shape a research agenda for platform (in)justice that centers best practices and solutions to mediate some of the harms previously identified in the CSCW community. Going beyond this individual event, we will identify strategies of action that center the needs and assets of people residing in the Majority World when it comes to designing, upholding or challenging the frameworks enabling contemporary platforms. © 2023 acm.

Smart cities leverage sensor technology to monitor urban spaces in real-time. Still, discrepancies in sensor data can lead to uncertainty about city conditions. Mobile crowdsourcing, where on-site individuals offer real-time details, is a potential solution. Yet it is unclear whether users would prefer to utilizing the mobile crowd on site to verify sensor data or to provide supplementary explanations for inconsistent sensor data. We conducted an online experiment involving 100 participants to explore this question. Our results revealed a negative correlation between perceived plausibility of sensor information and inclination to use mobile crowdsourcing for obtaining information. However, only around 80% of participants relied on crowdsourcing when they felt the sensor information as implausible. Interestingly, even when participants believed the sensor data to be plausible, they sought to use crowdsourcing for further details half of the time. We also found that participants leaned more towards using the crowd for explanations (48% and 49% of instances) rather than seeking verification when encountering perceived implausible sensor information (38% and 32% of instances). © 2023 acm.

The CSCW community's research has traditionally supported by large technology companies such as Google, Meta, or Microsoft. This is not only limited to financial support: our sites of research and our design initiatives have also traditionally included these large corporations, their platforms, and their services. This panel brings together people working on questions of social computing and distributed collaboration outside of Big Tech companies-whether by fostering community work and activism, crafting legistlation, seeking alternative funding streams, leading unionization or federated ventures, or promoting alternative ways of interacting digitally. Panelists will consider how CSCW research can and should consider alternative sources of support and sites of influence, how imbrication with specific technologies developed by Google, Meta or Twitter has shaped our findings about "social"technologies, issues in system design and maintenance outside of the Big Tech ecosystem, how to engage with regulatory stakeholders to enact change, and how to work productively outside of platform capitalism. With increasing public concern over the power of large technology companies and public gaffes with respect to once-trusted corporate infrastructures, the panelists show what we gain and lose analytically, practically, and in terms of sociotechnical futuring when CSCW practitioners look beyond the Big Tech ecosystem. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Decolonial and postcolonial computing scholars focus on the relationship between coloniality and technology. While many recent empirical and design studies have adopted these theoretical lenses, these conversations are often disconnected. Through a systematic literature review, we seek to understand patterns within and between decolonial computing and postcolonial computing. As an early step toward that objective, this poster presents results from our preliminary scientometric exploration of 115 papers' metadata and discusses research trends and popular publication venues in these areas. Using citation network analysis, we found smaller communities in decolonial and postcolonial computing scholarship based on their use of theoretical frameworks, objectives, types of papers, authors' collaboration and affiliations, and research sites and populations. We conclude by discussing future research directions to bring these communities into conversations with each other. © 2022 Owner/Author.

With over 1.5 million content creators, OnlyFans is one of the fastest growing subscription-based social media platforms. The platform is primarily associated with sexual content. Thus, OnlyFans creators are uniquely positioned at the intersection of professional social media content creation and sex work. While the motivations of experienced sex workers to adopt OnlyFans have been studied, in this work we seek to understand the motivations of creators who had not previously done sex work. Through a qualitative interview study of 22 U.S.-based OnlyFans creators, we find that beyond the typical motivations for pursuing gig work (e.g., fexibility, autonomy), our participants were motivated by three key factors: (1) societal visibility and mainstream acceptance of OnlyFans;(2) platform design and affordances such as boundary-setting with clients, privacy from the public, and content archives;and (3) the pandemic, as OnlyFans provided an enormous opportunity to overcome lockdown-related issues.

Identifying social media posts that spread vaccine misinformation can inform emerging public health risks and aid in designing effective communication interventions. Existing studies, while promising, often rely on single user posts, potentially leading to flawed conclusions. This highlights the necessity to model users' historical posts for a comprehensive understanding of their stance towards vaccines. However, users' historical posts may contain a diverse range of content that adds noise and leads to low performance. To address this gap, in this study, we present VaxMine, a cooperative multi-agent reinforcement learning method that automatically selects relevant textual and visual content from a user's posts, reducing noise. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we create and release a new dataset of 2,072 users with historical posts due to the unavailability of publicly available datasets. The experimental results show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods with an F1-Score of 0.94 (an absolute increase of 13%), demonstrating that extracting relevant content from users' historical posts and understanding both modalities are essential to detecting anti-vaccine users on social media. We further analyze the robustness and generalizability of VaxMine, showing that extracting relevant textual and visual content from a user's posts improves performance. We conclude with a discussion of the practical implications of our study by explaining how computational methods used in surveillance can benefit from our work, with flow-on effects on the design of health communication interventions to counter vaccine misinformation on social media. © 2024 Owner/Author.

Grandparents and grandchildren are important parts of each other's lives. However, they may not be able to always be co-located to interact and share activities. We conducted case studies to explore how grandparents and grandchildren use video calls to spend time with each other, when being co-located is not possible for extended periods of time. We found that aspects such as framing and camera work, unilateral and shared activities, and contextual awareness are especially relevant for this type of interaction, especially for children. We additionally provide potential design and exploration avenues for future research. © 2022 Owner/Author.
