Attacking iris systems with fake iris patterns has become the largest security risk of iris recognition systems. therefore iris liveness detection which discriminate genuine or fake iris images is of significant importance to iris recognition systems. However, the state-of-the-art algorithms mainly rely on hand-crafted texture features which can only identify fake iris images with single pattern. this paper proposes a Multi-patch Convolution Neural Network (MCNN) that is capable of handling different types of fake iris images. MCNN directly learns the mapping function between raw pixels of the input iris patch and the labels. the outputs of each patch are fed into a decision layer which determines the final decision. Our proposed algorithm automatically learns the features to detect hybrid pattern of fake iris images rather than handcraft. the decision layer helps to improve the robustness and accuracy for iris liveness detection. Experimental results demonstrate an extremely higher accuracy of iris liveness detection than other state-of-the-art algorithms. the proposed MCNN remarkably achieve the best results with nearly 100% accuracy on ND-Contact and CAISA-Iris-Fake datasets.

Communication latency still hinders the adoption of Cloud computing paradigms in medical imaging environments where it could serve as a reliable technology to support repository outsourcing solutions or inter-institutional workflows, for instance. One way to overcome this is by implementing cache repositories and prefetching mechanisms. Nevertheless, such solutions are usually based on static rules that may inefficiently manage the cache storage capacity. For that reason, this paper compares a patternrecognition system using incremental learning versus batch learning, in order to assess which one could be more appropriately used in a medical imaging cache mechanism.

In this paper we conduct a comparative study of local key-point detectors and local descriptors for the specific task of mobile document classification. A classification architecture based on direct matching of local descriptors is used as baseline for the comparative study. A set of four different key-point detectors and four different local descriptors are tested in all the possible combinations. the experiments are conducted in a database consisting of 30 model documents acquired on 6 different backgrounds, totaling more than 36.000 test images.

Due to low resolutions of infrared face image, the local feature extraction is more appreciated for infrared face feature extraction. In the current LBP (local binary pattern) feature extraction on infrared face recognition, single scale is encoded, which consider limited local discriminative information. A new infrared face recognition method based on joint encoding of multi-scale LBP (JEMLBP) is proposed in this paper. To consider correlation in different micro-structures, co-occurrence matrix of multi-scale LBP codes is used to represent the infrared face. the experimental results show the recognition rates of infrared face recognition method based on JEMLBP can reach 91.2% under variable ambient temperatures, outperforms that of the classic method based on single scale LBP histogram.

Recently, the horizon of dynamic time warping (DTW) for matching two sequential patterns has been extended to deal with non-Markovian constraints. the non-Markovian constraints regulate the matching in a wider scale, whereas Markovian constraints regulate the matching only locally. the global optimization of the non-Markovian DTW is proved to be solvable in polynomial time by a graph cut algorithm. the main contribution of this paper is to reveal what is the best constraint for handwriting recognition by using the non-Markovian DTW. the result showed that the best constraint is not a Markovian but a totally non-Markovian constraint that regulates the matching between very distant points;that is, it was proved that the conventional Markovian DTW has a clear limitation and the non-Markovian DTW should be more focused in future research.
