Presents a mixed-signal distributed VLSI architecture for massively parallel array processing, with fine-grain embedded memory. the three-transistor processing element in the array combines a charge injection device (CID) binary multiplier and analog accumulator with embedded dynamic random-access memory (DRAM). A prototype 512/spl times/128 vector-matrix multiplier on a single 3 mm/spl times/3 mm chip fabricated in standard CMOS 0.5 /spl mu/m technology achieves 8-bit effective resolution and dissipates 0.5 pJ per multiply-accumulate.

patternrecognition and classification has so far remained a largely unexplored area of peat-land science. the objective of this work is to classify the surface patterns displayed on an aerial photo of Kentra Moss, a bog (mire) in Western Scotland, UK. the computer experiments reported in this research present the attributes of image textures calculated using statistical texture measures, e.g., mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis, and entropy. Insignificant attributes are eliminated by using statistical techniques. On the other hand the clusters are obtained by calculating the Euclidean distances among all exemplars. the importance of this work is the provision of an objective method for classifying mire surface patterns, much needed but so far not available.

Directional features extracted from Gabor responses are used as primitives for perceptual grouping. In previous work, we extracted Gabor features in 8 directions and then applied two self-organising maps, thus classifying each pixel in the image within a neuron-map, each corner of which represents one of four main directions. In this work we group pixels with similar directional features to detect salient structures within an image. Results obtained from application to forward-looking infrared (FLIR) images are very promising.

Intelligent electronic nose (ENOSE) system technology is gaining importance in several industrial applications. these include process control and quality control in industries such as foodstuffs, beverages, tobacco, perfumery and pharmaceutical. ENOSE is also crucial component in industrial safety (smoke and hazardous gas detection) as well as environmental pollution control. this paper deals with design of an intelligent ENOSE system for the identification of gas/odours using a sensor array and a neural network pattern classifier. Previous researchers have shown that the power of discrimination increases rapidly withthe number of sensors in the array whose information potential is very large and the patternrecognition (PARC) method is a clever way to extract this information. the authors show in this paper withthe powerful PARC technique, the need of larger array can be compensated. Withthis view, they design a neural classifier using two different learning approaches and train the network over the responses of surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors exposed to hazardous vapours like diethyl sulphide (DES) and iso-octane (ISO). Dimensionality of the data set is varied from 1 to 8 by taking different number of sensors. It is found that for a backpropagation trained neural classifier, the optimum number of sensors required for satisfactory classification under noisy conditions is 4 to 5. this is a very limited range beyond which backpropagation has great difficulty in training the neural classifier even with repeated restarts and different weight initializations. To alleviate this problem, hybridization of soft computing tools like neural networks and genetic algorithms promises to provide the design of better intelligent system. the authors propose the use of a genetic algorithm based on a special MRX operator introduced by them and demonstrate very encouraging results with genetically trained neural network model even with larger as well as smaller numbers of senso
