In this work we evaluate the state of the semiconductor manufacturing industry and its challenges and trends. Future trends in the industry are analyzed from three perspectives: the evolution of Industry 4.0, the advances in semiconductor materials, and the impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The semiconductor manufacturing industry witnessed an acute decline in the United States and other regions in the two decades prior to the CoVid-19 pandemic. The decline was only uncovered after the chip shortage of 2021 that resulted from the severe supply chain disruption. Trends in the industry were analyzed from three perspectives: Industry 4.0, advances in materials, and the Post-pandemic era. As a result of the evolution of the fourth generation of industry (Industry 4.0), trends in semiconductor manufacturing include robotization, which caused the industry to become the largest market for industrial robotics since 2020, and an all-time peak globalization. The semiconductor industry is a very globalized industry with corporates from different parts of the world taking part in the production of the final product. Although some materials such as carbon and Gallium Nitride show promising trends to replace silicon as the material of choice. It will likely not be before two or three decades when a semiconductor material will be able to replace silicon. Challenges for the industry include the shortage of the trained-workforce, and the added inter-country restrictions that may hinder the globalization of the industry. © 2025 IEEE.

Simulators are the tools used to study the behaviour of an entity, in this case, Wheeled Mobile Robots. These simulators played a significant role in robotics research as a tool for effectively testing algorithms, concepts and strategies. One such widely used simulator in the field of robotics is Gazebo. This paper overviews how a differential drive robot is simulated using Gazebo in a ROS environment. ROS is an open-source robot operating system. As ROS is open-source, many people have contributed to building robot software systems. These software systems can be used for various research and other requirements accordingly. Gazebo enables Simulation of the world, physical model, sensors and control system through the Unified Robot Description Format (URDF) file. ROS is interfaced with Gazebo to allow the implementation and usage of various robotic software systems and tools on the simulated Robot. In this paper, Localisation, Mapping and Path Planning algorithms are being implemented on the mobile Robot. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper develops a combined active and passive variable admittance compliant control algorithm for teleoperation robotic systems. We have devised a novel combined active and passive variable admittance control structure for teleoperation robotic systems, which consists of the following components to fulfill compliance and efficiency requirements. Initially, we have designed a variable scaling workspace mapping for teleoperation robotic system to achieve efficient and accurate mapping with different speeds. Then, we have devised an active admittance algorithm to enable swift movements of the slave robot, allowing it to attain higher velocities while preserving compliance. Subsequently, to address the potential occurrence of unexpected rigid collisions during robot motion, we have devised a passive variable admittance control algorithm. Furthermore, we have proposed an active variable admittance control algorithm for maintaining a constant force output in the robot, which is designed based on the Lyapunov theory. Eventually, we have conducted comparative experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness and improved performance of the proposed algorithm. © 2023 IEEE.

With the rapid advancement of technology, encoder systems have become key components in automation, robotics, and precision control systems. Encoders, as electromechanical sensors, convert mechanical motion or position into electrical signals that can be processed by control systems. This paper aims to explore various types of encoders, their working principles, and the design optimization of integrated circuit (IC) encoders. First, the definitions and functions of incremental and absolute encoders are introduced. Next, the paper analyzes the working principles of optical and magnetic encoders, with the former known for high resolution and accuracy, making it suitable for precision applications, and the latter offering strong environmental adaptability, ideal for industrial and automotive applications in harsh conditions. Furthermore, the paper examines the signal processing and data conversion processes in IC encoders, focusing on key functions such as noise reduction, signal amplification, and analog-to-digital conversion, and analyzes practical cases of design and layout optimization in IC encoders. In conclusion, the paper points out that as technology progresses, encoder design will continue to evolve in reducing power consumption, improving signal integrity, and optimizing layouts, enhancing the precision and reliability of encoders, and further expanding their value across various industries. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2024.

The research on robustness optimization of large-scale heterogeneous combat network(HCN) is of great significance to improve the ability of combat system-of-systems(CSOS) to work in complex battlefield environment. However, there are still some shortcomings in the existing research, including the single setting attack strategy and the high computational cost in the search process of the optimization algorithm. In this article, we address aforementioned problems by using an computationally efficient evolutionary algorithm SP-RV-MOEANet to optimize the robustness of HCN. More specifically, two robust network parameters for node attack and link attack are first determined, then multi-objective optimization of HCN is carried out for these two parameters. Last, we analyze the results population and the optimal individual topology. Results show that the SP-RV-MOEANet has a satisfactory optimization effect for large-scale HCN, especially the optimization effect of robustness parameter for node attack is significantly better than that for link attack. On the other hand, by comparing the network topology before and after optimization, we find that the link from Sensor entities to Influential entities is more important. This finding provides useful insights for design of more robust combat system-of-systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Crane hoisting is an important part of smelting operations. The traditional operation method is that the ground dispatcher and the driver work together, which is not only inefficient but also has great potential safety hazards. To solve the above problems, this paper designs a video monitoring system. The PTZ camera is used for video monitoring of the crane hook operation, the laser sensor and the rotary encoder collect data, and the Kalman-based detection adaptive filtering algorithm is used for filtering processing to obtain the precise motion trajectory of the hook. On the basis of the traditional PID controller, the DMC controller based on predictive control is designed to solve the control lag problem in the control process of PTZ cameras. The experimental results show that the monitoring system can clearly display the hook in the center of the screen, help the crane operator to grasp the status of the hook, improve the production efficiency of the workshop, and ensure the safety of hoisting. © 2023 IEEE.

This research involves the description of the newly developed acoustic communication system that can improve high data rates in the underwater channel. The problems in the conventional underwater communication techniques are being solved in the proposed system with the help of integrating the latest modulation techniques, effective transducers, and signal processing algorithms. The effectiveness of the system in achieving studies details high data rates and reasonable signal integrity and flexibility to unfavorable underwater environments during simulations and field trials. The simulated studies point to a maximum of 500kbps and practical trials a maximum of 480 kbps plus higher energy efficiency than regular systems. It still suggests that there is a need to continue with the improvements on all these areas of system performance since the system was design for varied depths and water types though there is an indication that the system performance declines in turbulent conditions. They are beneficial to develop and improve the underwater communication techniques meant to have a positive impact on technological applications such as underwater robotics, environmental and oceanographic surveys. Hence, the successful implementation of this system can be regarded as a major breakthrough towards the resolution of the problems that arise with high-speed data transmission in undersea environment. © 2024 IEEE.
