this paper presents a keyword spotting technique that locates keywords within document images captured by a digital camera. In the proposed technique, the shape of word images in perspective view is captured by using three perspective invariants, namely, holes, water reservoirs, and character ascenders and descenders. Given a camera image of document, text line and word images are first segmented through the connected component analysis. the three perspective invariants are then detected through two rounds of scanning process, which transliterate each character image into a character shape code of dimension six and so convert each word image into a word shape code. Keywords within camera images of documents are finally located through a partial matching process. Experiments show some promising results.

Environmental Microbiology (EM) is an important scientific field, which investigates the ecological usage of different microorganisms. Traditionally, researchers look for the information of microorganisms by checking references or consulting experts. However, these methods are time-consuming and not effective. To increase the effectiveness of EM information search, we propose a novel approach to aid the information searching work using Content-based Image Retrieval (CBIR). First, we use an microorganism image as input data. Second, image segmentation technique is applied to obtain the shape of the microorganism. third, we extract shape feature from the segmented shape to represent the microorganism. Especially, we use a contour-based shape feature called Internal Structure Histogram (ISH) to describe the shape, which can use angles defined on the shape contour to build up a histogram and represent the structure of the microorganism. Finally, we use Euclidean distances between each ISHs to measure the similarity of different EM images in the retrieval task, and use Average Precision (AP) to evaluate the retrieval result. the experimental result shows the effectiveness and potential of our EM-CBIR system.

this paper presents a document skew and orientation detection technique. the proposed technique estimates document skew and orientation based on the observation that text images normally hold a large amount of equidistant interline spacings and the number of character ascenders is statistically much larger than that of character descenders. Given a document image with arbitrary skew and orientation, white run histograms are first constructed through scanning documents in horizontal and vertical directions. Document skew is then estimated by using the white runs that exactly span the interline spacing. Lastly, document orientation is determined according to the numbers of character ascenders and descenders, which are detected by using the white runs that cross the interline spacing and lie over character ascenders and descenders. Experiments show that the proposed technique is fast, accurate, and capable of detecting arbitrary document skew and orientation.

Under the status quo of the high dropout rate in MOOC learning, this paper studies the relationship between mode and content type of forum interaction and the learners' engagement pattern. Results show that learners who don't participate in the forum are more likely to give up further study. In the contrast, learners who post or comment lend to maintain their participations in following week, while learners who read the posts silently are likely to watch teaching videos. With regard to what they discuss in the the forum, the results indicate that learners who are involved with knowledge related content are more likely to login, watch videos and finish chapter quizzes next week. In addition, if the learner only focuses on forum content about social communication or questions about course management, he/she is more likely to give up next week. therefore, it is of great importance for MOOC organizer to main a good atmosphere in forum and promote high-quality, posts.

Online handwriting recognition is gaining interest due to the increase of pen computing applications and availability of tablet devices. the recognition of Arabic/Persian (A/P) characters is different from western handwriting, in which different calligraphic styles and cursive nature makes automatic recognition a more challenging and complicated task. In this paper, a new method is proposed to represent A/P characters. the proposed method incorporates a new set feature vectors suitable for A/P character set. A recognition system utilizing these set of features is developed for handwritten A/P characters. the result of the overall recognition system compare favorably with previous techniques.

Spectral Clustering is one of the most important method based on space dimension reduction used in patternrecognition. this method consists in selecting dominant eigenvectors of a matrix called affinity matrix in order to define a low-dimensional data space in which data points are easy to cluster. By exploiting properties of Spectral Clustering, we propose a method where we apply independently the algorithm on particular subdomains and gather the results to determine a global partition. Additionally, with a criterion for determining the number of clusters, the domain decomposition strategy for parallel spectral clustering is robust and efficient.
