this contribution treats the problem of learning and recognizing 3D objects using 2D views. We present a new Bayesian approach to 3D computer vision based on the expectation-maximization algorithm, where learning and classification of objects correspond to parameter estimation algorithms. We give a formal description of different learning and recognition stages and conclude the associated statistical optimization problems for each Bayesian decision. the training stage is supposed to be unsupervised in the sense that no explicit feature matching among different views is necessary. Finally, the experimental part of the paper considers the special case, where observable point features are assumed to be normally distributed and the object and its projections are modeled by mixture density functions.
this paper discusses the recognition of textual entailment in a text-hypothesis pair by applying a wide variety of lexical measures. We consider that the entailment phenomenon can be tackled from three general levels:...

this paper describes a system dedicated to online handwritten sentence recognition. the prototype is made up of two basic processors. the first controls the data acquisition, pentip trace segmentation, letter identification. the second aims at identifying and correcting the words candidates by integrating syntactic and lexical information. Sentences are parsed to list the grammatical classes of each incorrect candidates then lexical query searches for words in a lexicon according to grammatical classes. A final decision is made using a string comparison algorithm. Tests of the complete system are reported at the end for a typical writer-dependent application.

We are building a computer model of sound organization and understanding in human listeners. In particular, we would like to be able to detect and locate acoustic events that will be perceived as separate objects. Our model aims to duplicate this aspect of the auditory system although the level of correspondence is speculative given our current state of knowledge. We describe an implementation of grouping rules corresponding to the psychoacoustic cues of harmonicity, common onset, continuity and proximity. We increase the system's robustness by adding a second layer of grouping that looks for corroboration between primary groupings. We believe that such a system of repeated hierarchic grouping is critical for the successful modeling of auditory functions.

Hidden Markov models (HMMs) have become a standard tool for patternrecognition in computer vision. Although parameter and topology estimation have been studied, and still are, detailed analysis of how these estimated parameters contribute to HMM performance is rarely addressed. We develop tools for measuring such contributions and illustrate key issues in a representative task of gesture recognition - 3D motion recovery from 2D projections.
