this paper presents an objective comparative evaluation of layout analysis and recognition methods for scanned historical books. It describes the competition (modus operandi, dataset and evaluation methodology) held in the context of ICDAR2013 and the 2nd international Workshop on Historical Document Imaging and Processing (HIP2013), presenting the results of the evaluation of five methods - three submitted and two state-of-the-art systems (one commercial and one open-source). three scenarios are reported in this paper, one evaluating the ability of methods to accurately segment regions, one evaluating segmentation and region classification (with a text extraction goal) and the other the whole pipeline including recognition. the results indicate that there is a convergence to a certain methodology, in terms of layout analysis, with some variations in the approach. However, there is still a considerable need to develop robust methods that deal with the idiosyncrasies of historical books, especially for OCR.

Reading order detection and representation is an important task in many digitisation scenarios involving the preservation of the logical structure of a document. the corresponding need for the evaluation of reading order results generated by layout analysis methods poses a particular challenge due to potential deviations between ground truth and actually detected segmentation of the page. To this end a novel evaluation approach that responds to this problem by incorporating region correspondence analysis is proposed. Furthermore, a sophisticated reading order representation scheme is presented and used by the system allowing the grouping of objects with ordered and/or unordered relations. this is a typical requirement for documents with complex layouts such as magazines and newspapers. the evaluation method has been validated using the results of two state-of-the-art OCR / layout analysis systems and a basic top-to-bottom reading order detection algorithm applied on representative samples from the PRImA contemporary and the IMPACT historical document datasets.

Although there are some reports on offline Tamil isolated handwritten character recognition, to our knowledge there is only two reports on Tamil off-line handwritten word recognition. Also no city name dataset is available for Tamil script. In this paper we present a Tamil offline city name dataset, we developed, and propose a scheme for recognition. Because of the different writing style of various individuals, some of the characters in a Tamil city name may touch and accurate segmentation of such touching into individual characters is a difficult task. Avoiding proper segmentation here, we consider a city name string as a word and the recognition problem is treated as lexicon driven word recognition. In the proposed method, binarized city names are pre-segmented into primitives (individual character or its parts). Primitive components of each city name are then merged into possible characters to get the best city name using dynamic programming. For merging, total likelihood of characters is used as the objective function and character likelihood is computed based on Modified Quadratic Discriminant Function (MQDF), where direction features are applied. A dataset of 265 Tamil city names is developed. and the database will be available freely to the researchers. From the experiment of the proposed scheme 96.89% city name accuracy is obtained from this dataset.

We propose a statistical learning model for classifying cognitive processes based on distributed patterns of neural activation in the brain, acquired via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In the proposed learning machine, local meshes are formed around each voxel. the distance between voxels in the mesh is determined by using functional neighborhood concept. In order to define functional neighborhood, the similarities between the time series recorded for voxels are measured and functional connectivity matrices are constructed. then, the local mesh for each voxel is formed by including the functionally closest neighboring voxels in the mesh. the relationship between the voxels within a mesh is estimated by using a linear regression model. these relationship vectors, called Functional Connectivity aware Local Relational Features (FC-LRF) are then used to train a statistical learning machine. the proposed method was tested on a recognition memory experiment, including data pertaining to encoding and retrieval of words belonging to ten different semantic categories. Two popular classifiers, namely k-Nearest Neighbor and Support Vector Machine, are trained in order to predict the semantic category of the item being retrieved, based on activation patterns during encoding. the classification performance of the Functional Mesh Learning model, which range in 62-68% is superior to the classical multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) methods, which range in 40-48%, for ten semantic categories.

We have theoretically shown that multiferroic nanomagnets (consisting of a piezoelectric and a magnetostrictive layer) could be used to perform computing while dissipating similar to few 100 kT/bit at clock rates of similar to 1GHz [1,2,3]. they can act as memory elements [2], binary logic gates [3, 4] and associative memory for four state logic [5, 6]. the latter enables signal processing functions such as ultrafast image reconstruction and pattern recognition [7]. this talk will provide an overview of our research in modeling stress induced nanoscale magnetization dynamics, its application to ultra low energy hybrid spintronic/straintronics memory and information processing, and discuss preliminary experimental work in fabrication and experimental demonstration of these devices.

Circular object detection is very important in image processing. In this paper, accurate and robust circular object detection using probability searching is presented. the main contributions are threefold. We first redefine the gradient line with direction, which is robust against noise. then we randomly select two pixels to determine a candidate center and radius by the intersection of gradient lines in a connected region instead of the whole image to improve time speed. After the candidate circle is determined, we search the other points using the conditional probability, and we revise accurate center and radius quickly in the searching process. three tests demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms single-circle and multi-circle detection methods in the robust, accuracy and real-time. © 2012 IEEE.

the set of so-called relevant patterns is a subset of all itemsets particularly suited for pattern-based classifica- Tion tasks. So far, no efficient algorithm has been de- veloped for computing the set of relevant patterns: All existing solutions have a worst-case complexity which is exponential in the size of the input and output. In this paper, we investigate new properties of the relevant pat- Terns and develop, thereupon, the first algorithm whose runtime is polynomial in the size of the input and out- put. As we show in the experimental section, this result is not only of theoretical interest but also of practical importance, often reducing the search space by orders of magnitude. In human-robot interaction, a social intelligent robot should be capable of understanding the emotional internal state of the interacting human so as to behave in a proper manner. the main problem towards this approach is that human internal states can't be totally trained on, so the robot should be able to learn and classify emotional states online. this research paper focuses on developing a novel online incremental learning of human emotional states using Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy model. When new data is present, a decisive criterion decides if the new elements constitute a new cluster or if they confirm one of the previously existing clusters. If the new data is attributed to an existing cluster, the evolving fuzzy rules of the TS model may be updated whether by adding a new rule or by modifying existing rules according to the descriptive potential of the new data elements with respect to the entire existing cluster centers. However, if a new cluster is formed, a corresponding new TS fuzzy model is created and then updated when new data elements get attributed to it. the subtractive clustering algorithm is used to calculate the cluster centers that present the rules of the TS models. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
