We study active learning as a derandomized form of sampling. We show that full derandomization is not suitable in a robust framework, propose partially derandomized samplings, and develop new active learning methods (i) in which expert knowledge is easy to integrate (ii) with a parameter for the exploration/exploitation dilemma (iii) less randomized than the full-random sampling (yet also not deterministic). Experiments are performed in the case of regression for value-function learning on a continuous domain. Our main results are (i) efficient partially derandomized point sets (ii) moderate-derandomization theorems (iii) experimental evidence of the importance of the frontier (iv) a new regression-specific user-friendly sampling tool less-robust than blind samplers but that sometimes works very efficiently in large dimensions. All experiments can be reproduced by downloading the source code and running the provided command line.

Artesis Virtual and VSTEP BV developed a virtual scenario training for leading firefighters. We evaluated the usability of the training application and measured the satisfaction of 53 trainees. the trainees were positive about the training application, the training itself, and the interaction with the interface. We observed that trainees experienced navigation difficulties and sometimes misjudged visual information. Evaluations of new versions of this application, should address the influence of interface problems on performance.

Web 2.0 is an emerging catch phrase and the applications associated with it shocked the traditional elearning world. However, is this really all new and can it be considered suitable for future interfaces for technology enhanced learning? In this paper, we present some experiences with LearnLand. this is an application designed and developed at Graz University of Technology and which has been running there since October 2006. It is based on the open-source software ELGG, which is a social software offering a high degree of choice, flexibility and openness and is considered as a system that places people at the hub of the activities. Our experimental research demonstrated that exactly this ease of use aspect is an absolute necessity for successful Web 2.0 learning applications. the tools of Web 2.0 have crossed Moore's chasm and reached the early majority, where they are evolving rapidly. However, the idea of social software itself, especially in learning scenarios, is not as far developed as we may imagine. It is necessary to take into account the fact that too few innovators and early adopters are actually using Web 2.0 technology to enhance existing learning behaviors. Insufficient educational concepts with Web 2.0 technologies require much future work.

Technical devices and software applications with an increasing number of functions are appearing on the market. With an aging population, there is a growing need to consider less experienced users. Integrating training applications in technical devices is a promising approach to close the knowledge gap of these users. But how should a training application be designed? We developed a training program which teaches the use of a mobile phone in a task oriented manner. Training versions were designed which differ in their degree of interactivity: the learner trained either with an improved paper-based manual or with an interactive e-learning application, which integrates guided exercises in the learning process. these training versions are compared experimentally. Preliminary results show that both groups learned successfully to use a mobile phone.

In this paper, we investigate how to use future interaction technologies to enhance learning technologies. We examine in detail how tracking the mouse pointer and observing the user's gaze can help to monitor the use of web applications and in particular E-learning applications. To improve learning and teaching, it is of interest to understand in what order and to what extent users read texts, how much time they spend on individual parts of the teaching materials, and where they get stuck. Based on a standard web browser as an application platform, extended with a gaze tracking facility, we conducted studies to explore the feasibility of this novel approach. the concept includes an extension of current technologies to allow JavaScript code running in the browser to access the current gaze position of the user. Our work shows how pieces of web technology and eye gaze tracking can be put together to create a new platform for E-learning that provides additional benefits for learners and teachers.

the newly established Writing Center at the Hellenic American Union and the Hellenic American University is a breakthrough in what conventional Writing Centers entail in terms of both target audience and nature. It aims to address the needs of both the Hellenic American Union and the Hellenic American University students along with the general public for the improvement of academic, professional and writing the traditional role of Writing Centers-both in the USA and in Europe- is to offer academic writing assistance to students and help them develop their writing skills, for specific purposes or across the curriculum. the Writing Center at the Hellenic American University shares the same fundamental aims but extends its mission to a wider scope of applications and audiences, addressing the needs not only of the Hellenic American University students but also of the general public. Its services go beyond the traditional face-to-face, "paper-pencil" approach since assistance is provided through innovative design, e-equipment, and original software that encourage collaboration and individualized monitoring, both on site and on line. thus, the Writing Center at the Hellenic American University aspires to become a showcase of how collaborative writing - defined in a variety of ways - is realized in terms of the cooperation among the particular Writing Center stakeholders and the learning outcomes involved.

this paper describes an application that is based on geographic queries to retrieve personal pictures when visiting points of interest using mobile devices such as PDAs. the retrieved information can be visualized in different ways, including the spatial visualization of the pictures of the places visited. the paper describes the user interface features and the experiments that were made to illustrate the proposed methods.

Fractal theory has been used for computer graphics, image compression and different fields of pattern recognition. In this paper, a fractal based method for recognition of both on-line and off-line Farsi/Arabic handwritten digits is proposed. Our main goal is to verify whether fractal theory is able to capture discriminatory information from digits for pattern recognition task. Digit classification problem (on-line and off-line) deals with patterns which do not have complex structure. So, a general purpose fractal coder, introduced for image compression, is simplified to be utilized for this application. In order to do that, during the coding process, contrast and luminosity information of each point in the input pattern are ignored. therefore, this approach can deal with on-line data and binary images of handwritten Farsi digits. In fact, our system represents the shape of the input pattern by searching for a set, of geometrical relationship between parts of it. Some fractal-based features are directly extracted by the fractal coder. We show that the resulting features have invariant properties which can be used for object recognition.

We present initial results from the application of an automated facial expression recognition system to spontaneous facial expressions of pain. In this study, 26 participants were videotaped under three experimental conditions: baseline, posed pain, and real pain. In the real pain condition, subjects experienced cold pressor pain by submerging their arm in ice water. Our goal wits to automatically determine which experimental condition wits shown in it 60 second clip from a previously unseen Subject. We chose a machine learning approach, previously used successfully to categorize basic emotional facial expressions in posed datasets as well as to detect individual facial actions of the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) (Littlewort et al, 2006;Bartlett et al., 2006). For this study, we trained 20 Action Unit (AU) classifiers on over 5000 images selected from a combination of posed and spontaneous facial expressions. the output of the system was a real valued number indicating the distance to the separating hyperplane for each classifier. Applying this system to the pain video data produced a 20 channel output stream, consisting of one real value for each learned AU, for each frame of the video. this data was passed to a second layer of classifiers to predict the difference between baseline and pained faces, and the difference between expressions of real pain and fake pain. Naive human subjects tested on the same videos were at chance for differentiating faked from real pain, obtaining only 52% accuracy. the automated system was successfully able to differentiate faked from real pain. In an analysis of 26 subjects, the system obtained 72% correct for subject independent discrimination of real versus fake pain on a 2-alternative forced choice. Moreover, the most discriminative facial action in the automated system output was AU 4 (brow lower), which was consistent with findings using human expert FACS codes.

Multimedia has the promise of imparting medical education through novel teaching methods and encourages student interest. Medical educators must adapt to developing such computer and instructional technology to make such presentations a commonplace in the teaching setting. the scope of this paper is limited to the role of a physician in designing an educational multimedia instructional application using animations. It describes the requirements and stages of development of such a program with the goal of maximizing learning effectiveness. the animations entitled "How does blood clot?" are interactive and made in a computer program called "Flash" that focuses and simplifies the complicated concepts of blood coagulation. this animation is currently used as a part of the Problem Based learning course in the Hematology/Neoplasia domain by second year medical students in the College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University, East Lansing MI. Student feedback/responses are described. the animations were also used to educate pediatric residents and senior medical students (3rd and 4th year) in reviewing the coagulation course. Insights gained from developing such projects are presented as a potential to use animation in computer assisted learning & teaching in medicine for the development of other projects in science learning environments.
