Explanations in interactive machine-learning systems facilitate debugging and improving prediction models. However, the effectiveness of various global model-centric and data-centric explanations in aiding domain experts to detect and resolve potential data issues for model improvement remains unexplored. This research investigates the influence of data-centric and model-centric global explanations in systems that support healthcare experts in optimising models through automated and manual data configurations. We conducted quantitative (n=70) and qualitative (n=30) studies with healthcare experts to explore the impact of different explanations on trust, understandability and model improvement. Our results reveal the insufficiency of global model-centric explanations for guiding users during data configuration. Although data-centric explanations enhanced understanding of post-configuration system changes, a hybrid fusion of both explanation types demonstrated the highest effectiveness. Based on our study results, we also present design implications for effective explanation-driven interactive machine-learning systems.

human-Computer Interaction and the Arts have a relatively recent history, but computers have opened the world to new forms of expression and wide audiences. The way in which we think of art has changed, from webcomics and digital painting to AI-generated imagery and NFTs. However, these changes have also caused tension, and a disparity between what art is, and how it reconciles with research. This workshop aims to bring together artists and researchers to explore the current worldview of HCI and Art and speculate as to its possible, plausible, and probable futures, via discussion, collaboration, and the formation of new expressive artworks, objects, and performances. Through this process, we will also create a roadmap for a common future and imagine new ways of sharing this dual practice with the SIGchi community and beyond. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Despite the common use of rule-based tools for online content moderation, human moderators still spend a lot of time monitoring them to ensure they work as intended. Based on surveys and interviews with Reddit moderators who use AutoModerator, we identifed the main challenges in reducing false positives and false negatives of automated rules: not being able to estimate the actual efect of a rule in advance and having difculty fguring out how the rules should be updated. To address these issues, we built ModSandbox, a novel virtual sandbox system that detects possible false positives and false negatives of a rule and visualizes which part of the rule is causing issues. We conducted a comparative, betweensubject study with online content moderators to evaluate the efect of ModSandbox in improving automated rules. Results show that ModSandbox can support quickly fnding possible false positives and false negatives of automated rules and guide moderators to improve them to reduce future errors.

In the period from August to October 2022, we conducted an online survey concerning users' perception and use of videoconferencing systems. We collected and analyzed a total of 245 responses from German-speaking participants. Each participant reported general use and case-specific use scenarios. We present usage trends and perceptions with respect to security, privacy and usability of various unified communications and collaboration (UCC) applications. The most frequently used tools, such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, were rated lower in terms of security and privacy, but their usability ratings were above average. Tools tend to be avoided because of a lack of usability rather than security and privacy concerns. Nevertheless, almost 12% (29/245) of all participants reported using applications which were subject to security and privacy issues and which study participants would therefore personally prefer to avoid. © 2023 Owner/Author.

There is increasing interest in how digitalisation variously impacts different socio-economic demographics' ability to access, and realise benefits from, public services. Centring citizens' lived experience in the identification of harms and benefits is critical for the evaluation of digital services, and more broadly for responsible innovation. Yet this poses significant challenges, particularly when engaging those living in precarious conditions. This paper reports on a study that engaged citizens living with poverty (n=76) to articulate harms arising from digitalisation in the context of an e-government social protection service. Interviews and surveys supported by speculative scenarios of ongoing changes helped surface and express citizen-centric harm characteristics within wider ecosystems before, during and after access, beyond a narrower service-lifecycle viewpoint. Drawing on the findings, we develop a taxonomy of harms and discuss how this can be utilised by HCI practitioners concerned with responsible innovation in digital welfare contexts.

The pervasive adoption and use of Generative AI tools have prompted a discourse on determining the optimal balance between automation and human agency in processes executed by users with the assistance of this technology. This paper presents a user-centered co-creativity framework that identifies key dimensions responsible for the modulation of agency and control between users and AI in co-creative processes. It also suggests an actionable way of implementing the framework in a customization tool, in the form of a mobile application, which can be used to tailor the interaction between users and the AI system following the dimensions proposed in the framework. The paper contributes new insights within the literature on Computational Creativity and human-Computer Interaction interested in the investigation of modalities of co-creation between humans and AI.

Ongoing human-Computer Interaction (HCI) studies in Africa have revealed the prevalence of colonial influences in current research and design practices. These colonial influences have given rise to racism and discriminatory practices in research, consequently affecting study outcomes and design implications. Responding to this, Afrocentricity which values critical thinking, cultural representation and inclusivity of African heritage has been explored. Its exclusive use, however, could increase the risk of essentialism and exclude Africans without indigenous cultural experiences. Using a keyword-based approach targeting HCI research publications, this scoping review examines 16 empirical HCI publications from 2013 to 2023. By assessing the impact of Afrocentricity on research and design practices, we identify ambiguities in the positionalities of researchers and its role in study design. To address these issues, we propose a deconstructive Afro-postmodernism framework.

This course takes both a practical and theoretical approach to introduce the principles, methods and tools for including "non-standards"properties inside interactive systems and interaction technologies. The course focusses on safety, dependability and security but encompasses additional contributing factors such as privacy, availability and trustworthiness and relate them to HCI-centric properties such as User Experience and Usability. The course will cover design, implementation and evaluation activities to assess these properties. A special attention will be made on how the properties are competing with one another in terms of knowledge of designers and resources required at development time. To paraphrase Susan Dray: "if it is not usable, it does not work"this course will argue that "if it does not work (i.e. it is not dependable) it is not usable"as well as "if it is not safe, it is not usable". The concepts in this course will be supported by multiple concrete examples taken from industries including autonomous cars, aircraft cockpits, large command and control systems but also research labs prototypes targeting at deploying technologies in real-life settings. © 2023 Owner/Author.

From wearable health tracking to sensor-laden cities, AI-enhanced pervasive sensing platforms promise far-reaching benefits yet also introduce societal risks. How might designers of these platforms effectively navigate their complex ecology and sociotechnical dynamics? To explore this question, we interviewed designers building mental health technologies who undertook this challenge. They are hospital chief medical information officers and startup founders together striving to create new sensors/AI platforms and integrate them into the healthcare ecosystem. We found that, while all designers aspired to build comprehensive care platforms, their efforts focused on serving either consumers or physicians, delivering a subset of healthcare interventions, and demonstrating system effectiveness one metric at a time. Consequently, breakdowns in patient journeys are emerging;societal risks loom large. We describe how the data economy, designers' mindsets, and evaluation challenges led to these unintended design consequences. We discuss implications for designing pervasive sensing and AI platforms for social good.
