Player Experience Modelling (PEM) is the study of AI techniques applied to modelling a player’s experience within a video game. PEM development can be labour-intensive, requiring expert hand-authoring or specialized data collection. In this work, we propose a novel PEM development approach, approximating player experience from gameplay video. We evaluate this approach predicting affect in the game Angry Birds via a human subject study. We validate that our PEM can strongly correlate with self-reported and sensor measures of affect, demonstrating the potential of this approach. © 2024, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). As player demand for information about esports games surges, live companion tools were developed to help them understand game-related knowledge, make decisions, and review post-game data. Despite growing interest, little is currently known about how different users perceive and use commercially available apps and their different features. However, this is important for creating tools that actually meet players' needs. To help fill this gap, we selected two companion apps for two different competitive game genres and explored them with respect to four dimensions - understandability, informativeness, decision making, and trustworthiness - across professional and nonprofessional players. Towards this end, we first conducted an online survey to assess users' perception around these dimensions. this was followed by online interviews to gain further insights. through statistical and thematic analysis, our results highlight commonalities and disparities in user behavior and preferences across user groups, contributing to our understanding and future design of live companion tools. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

the Reminiscence - the Monologues of Being Seen is the third-generation interactive media installation based on the Posture Portraits Project (PPP). PPP is an interdisciplinary project which examines how bodies have historically been created/made through scientific interventions and surveillance while simultaneously engaging with the concept of inclusivity of all bodies including those traditionally seen as "Other."To do so, we trace the development of healthism - the reinforcement of certain norms that construct the "healthy"as moral and pure and the "unhealthy"as foreign and polluted - in the modern American university which dates back to the early 17th century, and its relationship to the U.S. eugenics movement in the late 19th to 20th century. We explore how these ideologies were mobilized in the service of creating new disciplining and surveillance technologies in higher education by examining the case of what is known as "the posture portraits."these portraits, taken at colleges and universities across the nation during the 1920s-1960s, were used as a measurement of ability and good posture, which at that time, was linked to intelligence, beauty, and what it meant to be "normal."Most evidence of this malpractice was purged from the archives as if it had never happened. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Triangle counting is a graph algorithm that calculates the number of triangles in a graph, the number of triangles is a key metric for a large number of graph algorithms. Traditional triangle counting algorithms are divided into vertex-iterator and edge-iterator when traversing the graph. As the scale of graph data grows, the use of CPU with other architectural platforms for triangle counting has become mainstream. Our accelerating method proposes an algorithm for triangle counting on a single machine GPU, and performs a two-dimensional partition algorithm for large-scale graph data, in order to ensure that large graph data can be correctly loaded into GPU memory and the independence of each partition to obtain the right result. According to the high concurrency of GPU, a bit-wise operation intersection algorithm is proposed. We experiment with our algorithm to verify that our method effectively speeds up triangle counting algorithm on a single-machine GPU. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

graphics processing units (GPUs) are widely used in the area of scientific computing. While GPUs provide much higher peak performance, efficient implementation of real applications on the GPU architectures is still a non-trivial task. It is crucial to realize efficient solution algorithms that can better utilize GPU architectures. this paper presents our efforts in parallelizing and optimizing LESAP, a CFD application for scramjet combustion simulation, on NVIDIA GPUs. the GPU parallelization is realized based on the CUDA programming model, with a data-parallel implicit time-marching method that is efficient on the GPU architecture. Furthermore, shared memory and redundant calculation are proposed to reduce memory access overhead during GPU computation, and data transfer between CPU and GPU is optimized by packing the data to be transferred. the experimental results show that the GPU version, when runs on four V100 GPUs, achieves a speedup of 11.26 times compared to the CPU version that runs on two 24-core Intel Skylake Gold 6240R CPUs. Excellent parallel scalability across multiple GPUs is also observed. © 2022 IEEE.

this paper presents high-performance batched lower-upper (LU) factorization routines for small matrices on graphics processing units (GPUs). LU factorization is an effective method for solving linear equations. Pivoting, at least partial pivoting, is essential for LU factorization to ensure numerical stability. However, the row interchanges resulting from the pivoting are very troublesome due to non-coalesced memory access on GPUs. We analyze the global memory access of different variants of LU factorization algorithms and design our batched LU factorization routines based on the blocked left-looking algorithm with the minimum global memory access. To release the penalty of non-coalesced memory access, we propose a swapping rows group by group approach and a delaying row interchanges method. What's more, techniques for kernel fusion and data prefetching are used to improve overall performance. the numerical results on an NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPU show that our batched LU routine outperforms the highly optimized vendor library cuBLAS up to 6.5× and achieves up to 2.2× over the well-known open-source package MAGMA. © 2022 IEEE.

Molecular dynamics is a significant method in computational material and many other fields, and is computationally intensive. In this paper, we present a new molecular dynamics software, MISA-MD, which is mainly designed for high computational performance on GPU architecture. the main contributions include a redesign of the atom data structure, communication optimizations, parallel strategies and a series of GPU optimizations on memory accessing. Compared to the CPU version, the presented version of MISA-MD can achieve more than 130 speedup when running on GPU hardware. Moreover, our MISAMD code also demonstrates 51 % performance improvement, when compared to the well-known software LAMMPS on GPU. © 2022 IEEE.

In recent years, real-time ray tracing has attracted considerable attention with the increasing demand for photo-realistic graphics and rapid advances in CPUs/GPUs. However, efficient hardware architecture is challenging due to branches and high computation intensity for ray tracing. In this paper, we present a novel ray tracing hardware architecture called RTA (Ray Tracing Accelerator) to improve hardware efficiency. RTA has two key features: 1) an area-efficient T&I pipeline adopts three optimization strategies;2) the configuration of two Ray Traversal units has the highest ray tracing efficiency. Combined with these, we implement our system at RTL level with agile chip development. Experimental results demonstrate that RTA's performance achieves 2.83× higher than other academic and commercial architectures in a similar area. © 2022 IEEE.

the system of hydroelectric power stations on the Volga River, built in the 20th century, completely changed the hydrological regime of the Volga River. the current over-regulation of the water flow is the cause of the accelerating degradation of the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain. Modern analysis of water availability indicates a critical point associated with the spring filling of the Akhtuba binnacle. Various projects suggest a solution to this problem. this study is aims at identifying the most optimal location of a large dam below the Volzhsky hydroelectric power stations. We use a new model of hydraulic resistance based on the combined effect of both the friction force in the Manning model and the turbulent viscosity. Our study involves varying of the dam's location in a numerical shallow water model. We calculate the hydrological relationship between the release of water through the Volzhsky dam and the source of the Akhtuba, as a target function for analyzing the effectiveness of the project to construction such a dam. © 2023 IEEE.
