Previous works in the literature have shown the feasibility of general purpose computations for non-visual applications on low-end mobile graphics processors using graphics APIs. these works focused only on the functional aspects of the software, ignoring the implementation details and therefore their performance implications due to their particular micro-architecture. Since various steps in such applications can be implemented in multiple ways, we identify optimisation opportunities, explore the different options and evaluate them. We show that the implementation details can significantly affect the obtained performance with discrepancies up to 3 orders of magnitude and we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposal on two embedded platforms, obtaining more than 16x speedup over benchmarks designed following OpenGL ES 2 best practices.

the goal of reaching exascale computing is made especially challenging by the highly heterogeneous nature of modern platforms and the energy they consume. As compute nodes typically utilize multiple multi-core CPU and are increasingly equipped with PCIe based accelerators, both are contributing to an ever more dynamic power consumption. In our study we evaluate our target application on a variety of heterogeneous platforms, including high end FPGA, GPU, and Xeon Phi accelerators, with respect to energy efficiency at a node and cluster level. We compare multiple implementations of our application, each built with a different modern parallel programming framework, with respect to execution performance, code complexity and energy efficiency. Later we extrapolate based on our findings, the implications of scaling this application towards exascale, with projections of computation achievable within the exascale power budget for our three architectures.

Recently, neural networks have been demonstrated to be effective models for image processing, video segmentation, speech recognition, computer vision and gaming. However, high energy computation and low performance are the primary bottlenecks of running the neural networks. In this paper, we propose an energy/performance-efficient network acceleration technique on General Purpose GPU (GPGPU) architecture which utilizes specialized resistive nearest content addressable memory blocks, called NNCAM, by exploiting computation locality of the learning algorithms. NNCAM stores highly frequent patterns corresponding to neural network operations and searches for the most similar patterns to reuse the computation results. To improve NNCAM computation efficiency and accuracy, we proposed layer-based associative update and selective approximation techniques. the layer-based update improves data locality of NNCAM blocks by filling NNCAM values based on the frequent computation patterns of each neural network layer. To guarantee the appropriate level of computation accuracy while providing maximum energy saving, our design adaptively allocates the neural network operations to either NNCAM or GPGPU floating point units (FPUs). the selective approximation relaxes computation on neural network layers by considering the impact on accuracy. In evaluation, we integrate NNCAM blocks with the modern AMD southern Island GPU architecture. Our experimental evaluation shows that the enhanced GPGPU can result in 68% energy savings and 40% speedup running on four popular convolutional neural networks (CNN), ensuring acceptable < 2% quality loss.

Motion Onset Visually Evoked Potentials (mVEPs) are elicited by visual stimuli that offer a more elegant, less fatiguing visual presentation than other stimuli used in visual evoked potentials (VEPs) studies. mVEP for use in brain computer interface (BCI) video gaming offer users a pleasant presentation environment to play video games. Modern, commercially available video games are a popular form of entertainment offering visually compelling, dynamic and graphically complex environments. However, most popular games exhibit visually fatiguing properties such as moving, flashing imagery and complex 3D shapes which may hinder accuracies of certain BCI paradigms. Because mVEP relies on motion visual stimulus rather than flashing imagery, it may be more apposite for use within complex game environments than other VEPs such as P300 and SSVEP. In this study we investigate the potential impact of varying levels of graphical fidelity from commercially available video games within an mVEP BCI control scheme. Building on a previous study, which investigated simplistic 3D based game levels, the current study investigates increased visual complexity in commercially available games from five different generations of gaming console and from different genres. We compared the visual effects of each of the five games on mVEP detection accuracy and found some of the more primitive properties of video games such as the use of primary colours, dynamic character movement, flashing imagery and the pace of the games have an influence on detection accuracies. these findings provide information relevant to design of a mVEP BCI game which is visually appealing to a wide range of users whilst maintaining mVEP accuracies.

Sound propagation in 3D spaces is governed by similar physical principles as light. As a result, sound rendering in a 3D virtual environment can benefit from methods developed for graphics rendering and vice versa. In this review, we provide an overview of methods used for sound rendering that share concepts and techniques with graphics rendering. Firstly we describe geometrical propagation techniques where the computations are based on ray theory similar to ray tracing techniques in computer graphics. Secondly, we review numerical techniques. these techniques, similar to the idea of radiosity, are based on the subdivision of the space into elements. then we describe acceleration techniques that can be used in combination with other methods to speed up calculations. Lastly, for the sake of completeness, a quick overview is given of sound computation techniques that simulate specific sound effects that do not apply on illumination. the aim of this survey is to share knowledge among the two disciplines using familiar and known concepts.

Pharaonic inscriptions contain a lot of scenes that illustrate many activities in ancient Egypt, such as daily life activities, religious rituals, festivals, battles, etc. this paper aims to show how the Egyptian Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT) used computer graphics in some projects to visualize the ancient Egyptian scenes in an attractive manner. this paper is concerned with four different projects;namely the botanical garden in Karnak temple, the Zodiac of Dendera Temple, the Opet Festival, Kadesh Battle. In each of them, the heritage data visualization was realized with different methodology that suits better the content being presented. the paper describes those different methodologies, why they were used and challenges faced to achieve those projects.

We present a data-driven exploratory study to investigate whether trained object detectors generalize well to test images from a different modality. We focus on the domain of planar kinematic mechanisms, which can be viewed as a set of rigid bodies connected by joints, and use textbook graphics and images of hand-drawn sketches as input modalities. the goal of our algorithm is to automatically recognize the underlying mechanical structure shown in an input image by leveraging wellknown computer vision methods for object recognition with the optimizing power of multiobjective evolutionary algorithms. Taking a raw image as input, we detect pin joints using local feature descriptors in a support vector machine framework. Improving upon previous work, detection confidence depends on multiple context-based classifiers of varying image patch size and greedy foreground extraction. the likelihood of rigid body connections is approximated using normalized geodesic time, and NSGA-II is used to evolve optimal mechanisms using this data. the present work is motivated by the observation that textbook diagrams and hand-drawn sketches of mechanisms exhibit similar object structure, yet have different visual characteristics. We apply our method using various combinations of images for training and testing, and the results demonstrate a trade-off between solvability and accuracy. © 2014 by Knowledge Systems Institute Graduate School.

Cuneiform is one of the earliest known systems of writing consisting of wedge-shaped strokes forming signs impressed on clay tablets. Excavated cuneiform tablets are typically fragmented and their reconstruction is, at best, tedious but more often intractable given that fragments can be distributed within and between different collections. Digital archives relevant to cultural heritage, such as the Cuneiform Digital Palaeography Project [1]-[4] and the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative [5], [6], now make richly annotated artefact media available to wide populations. Similarly, developments in computer-aided three-dimensional reconstruction methods offer the potential to assist in the restoration of broken artefacts. In this paper, a system for providing computer assistance for identifying and orientating matching fragment pairs is described. Metrics to grade the quality and likely significance of potential matches are also described. Finally, the results from experiments with scans of laboratory fabricated tablet fragments and genuine fragmented cuneiform tablets are reported.

We present HiLight, a new form of screen-camera communication without the need of any coded images (e.g. barcodes) for off-theshelf smart devices. HiLight hides information underlying any images shown on a LED or an OLED screen, so that camera-equipped smart devices can fetch the information by turning their cameras to the screen. HiLight achieves this by leveraging the orthogonal transparency (alpha) channel, a well-known concept in computer graphics, to embed bits into pixel translucency changes without the need of modifying pixel color values. We demonstrated Hi- Light's feasibility using smartphones. By offering an unobtrusive, flexible, and lightweight communication channel between screens and cameras, HiLight opens up opportunities for new HCI and context-aware applications to emerge, e.g. smart glass communicates with screens for additional personalized information to realize augmented reality.
