The network resource competition of today' data enters is extremely intense between long-lived elephant flows and latency-sensitive mice flows. Achieving both goals of high throughput and low latency respectively for the two types of flows requires compromise, which recent research has not successfully solved mainly due to the transfer of elephant and mice flows on shared links without any differentiation. However, current data enters usually adopt clos-based topology, e.g. Fat-tree/VL2, so there exist multiple shortest paths between any pair of source and destination. In this paper, we leverage on this observation to propose a flow scheduling scheme, Freeway, to adaptively partition the transmission paths into low latency paths and high throughput paths respectively for the two types of flows. An algorithm is proposed to dynamically adjust the number of the two types of paths according to the real-time traffic. And based on these separated transmission paths, we propose different flow type-specific scheduling and forwarding methods to make full utilization of the bandwidth. Our simulation results show that Freeway significantly reduces the delay of mice flow by 85.8% and achieves 9.2% higher throughput compared with Hedera.

Automatic flight control systems (AFCS) are safety-critical systems tightly integrating computation, networking and physical processes. However, the uncertainty resulting from evolving dynamics in cyberspace and the physical world can affect the reliability of decision-making in the controller, threatening the system’s safety. How to accurately capture the uncertainty, effectively control the aircraft and improve safety has become an unavoidable challenge for the software industry. To this end, we define an uncertainty-aware modeling language (UAML), which supports modeling the AFCS’s dynamic behavior and environmental uncertainty using formal specifications. We use a machine learning-based method to predict the risk levels in operating environments as the representation of uncertainty from the physical world. The prediction result is transferred to UAML as the parameters. On this basis, we present a framework for quantitative safety evaluation using statistical model checking based on UPPAAL-SMC to help AFCS make reliable decisions at runtime. We illustrate our approach by modeling and analyzing a realistic example, and the experimental result demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach.

This work presents an open cloud interface extension to merge cloud computing and networks into one modeling and representation framework to extend clouds beyond data centers and enable cloud networking to set up distributed cloud infrastructures. The proposed extension to the de facto standard interface in cloud computing (OCCI) is named Open Cloud networking Interface (OCNI). OCNI is presented and evaluated in terms of its ability to integrate smoothly with existing cloud computing interfaces and to provide all the required capabilities to express connectivity requirements and ease connection establishment between cloud computing, network and storage nodes at the virtual and physical level irrespective of underlying transport technologies.

This paper presents a novel solver for calculating three-dimensional electric fields in substations and overhead lines, based on the well-known Charge Simulation Method. The software has been written using Python 3, which allows full integration with FreeCAD, and all other well-proven vector computational capabilities of NumPy. The geometric data of substations or overhead lines can be imported from CAD or SVG files (lay-out and section) and the program includes routines for automatic creation of discretized electrical conductors with a straight, parabolic or catenary profile. The other data defined by the operator are the electrical parameters of the conductors throughout the system, and the region of interest for field calculation, whose points coordinates are automatically generated along a given line or plane surface of regular form. The program discretizes the conductors into a large number of segmented cylindrical elements; each is replaced by a user specified number of equivalent charges, distributed concentrically around the element axis and with their own linear density to adequately consider the electric field asymmetries. Great flexibility to evaluate and visualize results has been achieved with high-quality 3D electrostatic field representations. The results obtained have been compared with other calculations in the literature and they were quite satisfactory.

Organisations can be complex entities, performing heterogeneous processing on large volumes of diverse personal data, potentially using outsourced partners or subsidiaries in distributed geographical locations and jurisdictions. Many organisations appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO) to assist them with their demonstration of compliance with the GDPR Principle of Accountability. The challenge for the DPO is to monitor these complex processing activities and to advise and inform the organisation with regard to the organisations demonstration of compliance with the Principle of Accountability. A review of GDPR compliance software solutions shows that organisations are being greatly challenged in meeting compliance obligations as set out under the GDPR, despite the myriad of software tools available to them. Many organisations continue to take a manual and informal approach to GDPR compliance. Our analysis shows significant gaps on the part of GDPR tools in their ability to demonstrate compliance in that they lack interoperability features, and they are not supported by published methodologies or evidence to support their validity or even utility. In contrast, RegTech has brought great success to financial compliance, using technological solutions to facilitate compliance with, and the monitoring of regulatory requirements. A review of the State of the Art identified the four success features of a RegTech system to be, strong data governance, automation through technology, interoperability of systems and a proactive regulatory framework. This paper outlines a set of requirements for GDPR compliance tools based on the RegTech experience and evaluate how these success features could be applied to improve GDPR compliance. A proof of concept prototype GDPR compliance tool was explored using the four success factors of RegTech, in which RegTech best practice was applied to regulator based self-assessment checklist to establish if the demonstration of GDPR compliance coul

The data caching in Device-to-Device (D2D) networks enables the quick data access in mobile networks. The D2D channels allows content sharing when two devices are in close proximity which can help improve resource utilization and network capacity. Due to the selfish nature of users, they wish to get as much replication as possible in the opportunistic connections, seeking to maximize their own profit. However, caching resources for other nodes may lead cost to the node who serves as cache. It lacks incentives for mobile nodes to cache for other peers in D2D network. In this paper, we use an incentive method to make mobile nodes cache for others and aim to minimize the total cost of getting object data in the network. The total cost is occurred by the cache placement of cache nodes and accessing cost of the other nodes. We consider the social ties and physical distance as the factors for the cost. We model the data cache problem as a socially-aware payment game, and we introduce a hierarchical caching scheme to incentive nodes to cache, which use the user relationship to construct the cost function. In order to model user relationship, we divide the network into three categories in perspective a node: self, friends and strangers. We obtain the Nash equilibrium of the game and propose a heuristic algorithm to solve the cache placement problem. The extensive simulation results show that our algorithm gain significant cache benefit.

Although the holy grail to store and manipulate data in Edge infrastructures is yet to be found, state-of-the-art approaches demonstrated the relevance of replication strategies that bring content closer to consumers: The latter enjoy better response time while the volume of data passing through the network decreases overall. Unfortunately, locating the closest replica of a specific content requires indexing every live replica along with its location. Relying on remote services for such a aim enters in contradiction with the properties of Edge infrastructures as locating replicas may effectively take more time than actually downloading content. At the opposite, maintaining such an index at every node would prove overly costly in terms of memory and traffic. In this paper, we propose a decentralized implementation of content indexing called AS-cast. Using AS-cast, every node only indexes its closest replica;and all connected nodes with a similar index compose a partition. AS-cast is (i) efficient, for it uses partitions to lock down the traffic generated by its operations to relevant nodes, yet it (ii) guarantees that every node eventually acknowledges its closest replica despite concurrent operations. Our prototype, implemented on PeerSim, shows that AS-cast scales well in terms of generated messages and termination time. As such, AS-cast can constitute a novel building block for geo-distributed services in need of efficient resource sharing in the vicinity of regions. © 2023, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Due to the increasing popularity of smart mobile devices, the amount of mobile data communications has led to explosive growth of data traffic in cellular networks. Cellular networks have to face the challenge of huge communication traffic. Offloading data traffic through opportunistic communication among smart mobile devices is a promising solution to partially solve this problem since there is almost no monetary cost for it. Large amount of smart mobile devices can communicate each other using Bluetooth or WIFI Direct in short communication range and they can form an opportunistic mobile social network. The opportunistic communications among smart mobile devices can effectively reduce the amount of cellular data traffic. However, mobile users take a long time to obtain useful data. In order to reduce data communication latency, this paper proposes three data dissemination protocols named RRDP(Request-Reply Dissemination Protocol), RDP(Random Dissemination Protocol) and LDP(LRU Dissemination Protocol) respectively. The three proposed protocols are based on opportunistic sharing policy. Extensive NS-2 simulation results show that (1) on the campus situation, the user's access delay of RDP is 56.4% less than the RRDP and LDP is 44.8% less than RRDP. (2) in the vehicular environment, the user's access delay of RDP is 32.5% less than the RRDP and LDP is 28.1% less than RRDP. RDP is the best protocol.

Program security bugs pose a great threat to users' privacy and security. A great deal of effort, e.g., runtime defense, dynamic detection, and static detection, has been conducted to attempt to be aware of the existence of security bugs. Most of the prior work focuses on detecting the security bugs. They report a mixed set of security bugs, regardless of whether the elements in the set are useful to the developers for the debugging. In this paper, we are instead devoted to automatically classifying the security bugs for the purpose of the productivity to the developers. Our insight is that the existing common security bugs can be featured by a simple rule that can be further simplified into a mathematical assertion problem. Based on this insight, we propose a Compile Time Error Segregator (CTES), which can automatically classify the security bugs into three categories, including deterministic bugs, internal indeterministic bugs, and external indeterministic bugs. The core idea of achieving the above includes three steps: 1) building a rule library according to the feature of each type of security bugs (e.g., buffer overflow, null-pointer dereference, and divide-by-zero), 2) obtaining the requisite information appearing in the rule, 3) verifying if the rule is established. If so, a deterministic bug is found, otherwise, a novel inverse taint analysis is further performed to distinguish the remaining two categories. We implement CTES on top of LLVM (3.5.0), running in parallel with normal compile procedure. Our experimental results on micro-benchmark and 14 real programs demonstrate the efficiency of CTES, and also show that CTES is able to precisely make the reported security bugs well-classified into three-categories.
