An accurate and efficient blood flow simulation in patient-specific arteries is instructive for the diagnose and treatment of various vascular diseases, which is, however, computationally challenging because of the complicated geometry of the artery and the turbulence in the blood flow. In this work, we introduce a parallel scalable two-level additive Schwarz method for fast solving the Navier-Stokes equations in a patient-specific full-size aorta with aneurysms. Distributions of the hemodynamics, such as the pressure, velocity, and wall shear stress, are presented and analyzed. The algorithm is studied with a focus on its robustness against different values of model parameters and parallel scalability. The results show that the proposed method is robust to solve large and complicated simulation problems with over 25 million unstructured elements using over 5000 processors on a supercomputer.

Science collaborations such as ATLAS at the high-energy particle accelerator at CERN use a computer grid to run expensive computational tasks on massive, distributed data sets. Dealing with big data on a grid demands workload management and data allocation to maintain a continuous workflow. Data allocation in a computer grid necessitates some data placement policy that is conditioned on the resources of the system and the usage of data. In part, automatic and manual data policies shall achieve a short time-to-result. There are efforts to improve data policies. Data placement/allocation is vital to coping with the increasing amount of data processing in different data centers. A data allocation/placement policy decides which locations sub-sets of data are to be placed. In this paper, a novel approach copes with the bottleneck related to wide-area file transfers between data centers and large distributed data sets with high dimensionality. The model estimates similar data with a neural network on sparse and uncertain observations and then proceeds with the allocation process. The allocation process comprises evolutionary data allocation for finding near-optimal solutions and improves over 5% on network transfers for the given data centers.

User involvement is a key element in designing and developing interactive systems. Increasingly, software projects are being conducted with geographically distributed teams. In these projects, interaction design becomes challenging as its traditional practices start to be carried out collaboratively with geographically dispersed participants. Despite this, little is known about user involvement in interaction design in distributed software development (DSD) context. In this paper, we present the results of an interview study conducted to understand how interaction design has been implemented in DSD projects. For this, semi-structured interviews were carried out with professionals with experience in DSD. The data were analyzed based on the thematic analysis method. The results of this study provide some characteristics related to user participation in DSD, such as the level of geographic dispersion and the role of users. This study also addresses the difficulties and practices in DSD projects when involving users in the design process. We conclude, therefore, that users have participated in interaction design activities in DSD projects, but the involvement of geographically distributed users is a challenge. This paper contributes to the knowledge of interaction design at the frontier of research between Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and DSD by identifying the main characteristics, gaps, and practices related to user involvement in DSD projects. © 2023 ACM.

The rapid evolution of Internet of Things (IoT) environments has created an urgent need for secure and trust-worthy distributed computing systems, particularly when dealing with heterogeneous devices and applications where centralized trust cannot be assumed. This paper proposes TrustMesh, a novel blockchain-enabled framework that addresses these challenges through a unique three-layer architecture combining permissioned blockchain technology with a novel multi-phase Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) consensus protocol. The key innovation lies in TrustMesh’s ability to support non-deterministic scheduling algorithms while maintaining Byzantine fault tolerance, features traditionally considered mutually exclusive in blockchain systems. The framework supports a sophisticated resource management approach that enables flexible scheduling decisions while preserving the security guarantees of blockchain-based verification. Our experimental evaluation using a real-world cold chain monitoring scenario demonstrates that TrustMesh successfully maintains Byzantine fault tolerance with fault detection latencies under 150 milliseconds, while maintaining consistent framework overhead across varying computational workloads even with network scaling. These results establish TrustMesh’s effectiveness in balancing security, performance, and flexibility requirements in trustless IoT environments, advancing the state-of-the-art in secure distributed computing frameworks.

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has been growing rapidly, and new applications using the IoT includes autonomous driving systems, mobile health, smart homes, VR/ARtechnologies, and many more. While IoT applications plays important roles in enriching our lives, the size of each generated task is increasing compared to tasks generated by traditional mobile devices, which can cause high latency when deployed in traditional cloud computing. Edge computing has emerged as a method to mitigate this problem. Edge computing can provide services with lower latency than conventional cloud computing methods because the tasks are processed in the vicinity of the user's device. However, when the tasks are concentrated in one of the distributed servers, the low processing power of these servers becomes a bottleneck and high latency may occur. In this paper, we proposed a deep reinforcement learning based offloading mechanism in an edge computing environment which can dynamically offload a task based on the performance and availability of nearby edge servers. Preliminary experiment results are promising and offered insights on related issues.

Photonic reservoir computing (RC), as a crucial variant of recurrent neural networks, has boasted substantial potential owing to its straightforward training processes and facile hardware integration. In this work, we introduce and validate both experimentally and numerically a novel post-processing technique, referred to as the clipping algorithm (CA), utilized on the high-performance deep residual time-delay RC (DR-TDRC). The proof-of-concept model, i.e., a four-layer DR-TDRC, comprises 960 interrelated neurons (240 neurons per layer) based on four injection-locked distributed feedback lasers. Our results demonstrate that the implementation of the CA can effectively mitigate issues associated with the redundant layers and improve the performance of deep architectures.

The cybersecurity market is rapidly growing in the face of ubiquitous vulnerabilities, with vendors delivering solutions ranging from basic software-based approaches to high-end services for diverse business needs. The sustainability of a cybersecurity business relies on its ability to update its solutions to address ever-changing cyber threats continuously. It requires a substantial customer base for data collection and service enhancement, which, in turn, can attract more customers. Therefore, a novel business model that acknowledges this positive network effect and provides incentives for potential customers is crucial to ensure the success of the cybersecurity business. In this paper, we develop an analytical framework with optimization and a Stackelberg game approach to model the cybersecurity market scenario for a cybersecurity vendor offering both a basic software-based service and a premium service. We delve into the market evolution and characterize the conditions under which the dynamic market converges to a unique equilibrium. The optimal pricing strategy for the vendor is analyzed to leverage the network effects for profit maximization. © 2025 IEEE.

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is an area focused on human interaction with/through computational systems, among which tangent studies on interaction design stand out. In HCI, interaction design has been consolidated as a practice with the potential to support interactive systems projects. On the other hand, more and more organizations are developing software with geographically distributed teams. However, interaction design in distributed software development (DSD) has yet to be explored, mapped, or structured in the scientific literature. Although there are reports in the scientific literature about interaction design in DSD and some proposed solutions, it is still being determined how interaction design occurs in DSD. This research investigated how interaction design has been practiced in DSD, seeking to understand its characteristics, challenges, and limitations. The research methodology was based on Charles S. Peirce's semiotic methodeutics, bibliographic research method, and mixed methods research to investigate the current state of knowledge and practice on interaction design in DSD. We hope that the results pointed out by this research contribute to the body of knowledge about interaction design at the research frontier between HCI and DSD by (i) providing an overview of research efforts on interaction design in DSD, (ii) providing an overview of the practice of interaction design in DSD, (iii) identify research gaps and discuss future research directions, and (iv) conceiving a set of recommendations for interaction design in DSD. © 2023 ACM.
