This paper presents a case study on the design, development, and evaluation of Tabeer-e-Isharaat (TEI), a digital educational platform tailored to meet the needs of deaf children at the Deaf Reach School in Pakistan. Informed by classroom observations and interviews with educational experts, TEI incorporates visual and interactive learning activities aligned with the curriculum and preferences of deaf students. Feedback from both deaf and non-deaf participants regarding the TEI platform suggests overall positive perceptions of its usability. While both groups found the platform easy to understand and navigate, there were slight differences noted, such as deaf participants encountering challenges in error recovery compared to their non-deaf counterparts.

This paper presents a preliminary design and development of a novel wristband connected to a mobile application to enhance social interaction among children aged 7-12 years who struggle with expressing themselves in group settings. Targeting pedagogical environments, the wristband can facilitate structured group discussions by allowing teachers to set parameters such as time limits via the app. Each child involved in the group discussion would wear an individual wristband, receiving notifications according to the set parameters. The system not only aids teachers in managing inclusive classroom discussions but also benefits parents by providing valuable insights into their child's social development. Moreover, it helps children build communication skills and confidence during group interactions. This innovative technology has the potential to positively impact educational settings by fostering inclusive happiness and a supportive environment for children's social and cognitive growth.

TogetherTales RPG" is an augmented reality (AR) platform designed for children aged 4 to 6, aiming to foster prosocial behavior through interactive and collaborative role-playing. TogetherTales RPG is inspired by children's design ideas related to technology supported social inclusion and prosocial skill development, a theme prevalent in children's submissions in light of pandemic socialization restrictions. TogetherTales RPG integrates classic tabletop role-playing game mechanics with advanced AI and AR technologies to immerses children in a narrative-driven world where their personalized avatars interact with virtual elements and collaborate with peers to solve challenges. This blend of imaginative role-play and real-world social interaction facilitates prosocial skill development in a fun, engaging, and developmentally appropriate way.

Parent involvement in children's homework has emerged as an important component of their education. However, this involvement can generate tension between parents and children, particularly when coupled with a heavy workload, potentially exacerbating stress levels in children. Some children desire to express and share their stress with their parents. However, limited emotional regulation abilities and a lack of stress awareness often hinder effective stress management and communication by children. To address this, we designed a stress biofeedback system named Stress Diffuser, comprising a wearable biosensor with interactive embodied devices, that display the child's stress during homework sessions. The system intends to manage children's stress by enhancing awareness among both the child and the parent, and influencing their educational strategies and the way of interaction. We conducted experiments with eight families, including primary school children aged eight to eleven and their parents. The results of our quantitative and qualitative analysis indicated that all participants enhanced their stress awareness while using Stress Diffuser during homework. Most parents adjusted their supervisory strategies and interaction styles in response to their children's stress data. The study sheds light on children's needs for a designed agent to communicate their stress and regulate their emotions. Furthermore, the study explores the use of interactive biofeedback technology in homework settings with parent involvement. It reveals a favorable influence on facilitating stress management in children and on enhancing the quality of supervision and interaction between children and parents.

Point clouds find extensive applications across diverse domains such as construction, architecture, and archaeology due to their capacity to encapsulate rich datasets. Given the density and detail of these datasets, extracting accurate structural information (geometrical and connectivity information) demands sophisticated algorithms and tools. The recent advancements in virtual reality (VR) technology and rendering techniques have significantly elevated the ability to visualize these point cloud datasets, affording users an immersive experience within the data. This immersive capability holds the potential to streamline the process of extracting valuable information from these datasets. In this work, we explore the feasibility of extracting and visualizing structural information from point clouds with immersive interfaces. We propose strategies to enhance human perception of the underlying structure and interactive methods to extract face, edge, vertex, and connectivity data from the raw, unorganized point clouds. Our method is evaluated based on public datasets. We believe our work represents a promising attempt to integrate human insights into the data processing pipeline.

With the development of the textile and clothing industry, understanding and grasping the characteristics and properties of textiles and clothing has become increasingly important. This article proposes a multimodal textile and clothing cognition graph(CG) construction method to comprehend textiles and clothing better. This method combines knowledge graph(KG) and multimodal data processing techniques to integrate various information about textiles and clothing into a unified CG. Firstly, critical information is extracted from textual and image data related to textiles and clothing using web crawling techniques. Then, utilizing modeling and representation methods of KG, the extracted information is organized into entities and relationships, thus constructing a CG for textiles and clothing. Finally, browsing and analysis of the textile and clothing CG are realized through graph visualization and interactive technologies. Experimental results demonstrate that this method can effectively construct a multimodal CG for textiles and clothing, supporting research and applications in the textile and clothing field. © 2023 IEEE.

Though journaling is often mentioned as a standard practice in sustained adult-child co-design teams, it has received considerably less attention in the literature than other co-design techniques. The lack of clarity about the specific goals and procedures associated with journaling can therefore make it difficult for co-design scholars and practitioners to implement, refine, and build upon this technique in their practice. In my dissertation, I will explore: (1) how adult and child design partners in Cooperative Inquiry (CI) co-design conceptualize the goals and challenges associated with journaling;(2) how reflective journaling can be meaningfully and feasibly integrated into the co-design process;and (3) how supported reflection, using tools and processes co-designed with children, can influence child design partners' learning and identity development. To answer these questions, I have conducted interviews with children on my co-design team at the University of Maryland (UMD KidsTeam) and adults from across the United States with expertise in CI, in addition to facilitating co-design sessions with UMD KidsTeam aimed at improving our team's journaling approaches. Moving forward, I will build upon this work to prototype co-designed reflective journaling tools and processes to support children's reflection. I will then evaluate the impact of these approaches on children's learning and identity development as design partners over time.

The popularity of computational notebooks is rapidly increasing because of their interactive code-output visualization and on-demand non-sequential code block execution. These notebook features have made notebooks especially popular with machine learning developers and data scientists. However, as prior work shows, notebooks generally contain low quality code. In this paper, we investigate whether the low quality code is inherent to the programming style in notebooks, or whether it is correlated with the use of machine learning techniques. We present a large-scale empirical analysis of 246,599 opensource notebooks to explore how machine learning code quality in Jupyter Notebooks differs from non-machine learning code, thereby focusing on code style issues. We explored code style issues across the Error, Convention, Warning, and Refactoring categories. We found that machine learning notebooks are of lower quality regarding PEP-8 code standards than non-machine learning notebooks, and their code quality distributions significantly differ with a small effect size. We identified several code style issues with large differences in occurrences between machine learning and non-machine learning notebooks. For example, package and import-related issues are more prevalent in machine learning notebooks. Our study shows that code quality and code style issues differ significantly across machine learning and non-machine learning notebooks. © 2023 IEEE.
