this paper explores the impact of adaptive navigation support on student work with parameterized questions in the domain of object-oriented programming. In the past, we developed QuizJET system, which is able to generate and assess parameterized Java programming questions. More recently, we developed JavaGuide system, which enhances QuizJET questions with adaptive navigation support. this system introduces QuizJET and JavaGuide and reports the results of classroom studies, which explored the impact of these systems and assessed an added value of adaptive navigation Support. the results of the studies indicate that adaptive navigation support encourages Students use parameterized questions more extensively. Students are also 2.5 times more likely to answer parameterized questions correctly with adaptive navigation support than without Such support. In addition, we found that adaptive navigation support especially benefit weaker students helping to close the gap between strong and weak students.

the explosion of Cloud computing propaganda has forced many companies to quickly move towards this new technology. Particularly given the current economic climate it seems like a prudent way to dynamically increase and decrease infrastructure at low cost. However, past experience with SOA has taught us that lack of commercial adaption and a proliferation of unusable standards may hinder this technology. Support from IBM and Microsoft for cloud is promising and leads to the need for strong design of cloud based systems to ensure quality and productivity. Issues already identified in Grid Computing and SOA will certainly prove important in the design of cloud based systems Due to the speed of network development due to cloud architectures, an increasing level of importance must be placed on the design to regulate issues such as: instance access control, regulatory issues, development practices, security and practical operational issues. Capturing and discussing best practices on these subjects will contribute to a healthy movement in the right direction for those who will develop the Service Cloud.

Cloud computing is the latest technology evolution and potential silver bullet, and there is both great expectation and fear to what consequences these technologies might cause. Based on the experience with the lack of adoption of SOA among the general development community the recommendation is to make sure that the development community engage in how cloud computing evolves. Although there is already strong support for these technologies from companies such as IBM and Microsoft, there is a need to explore good ways of designing services for the Cloud to ensure quality and productivity. there are movements in the modelling community that require further investigation as well as surviving concepts from the SOA era that need to be captured. In addition - due to the potential rapid availability of services in the cloud it is important to start exploring consequences of using such services, for instance access control, regulatory issues, development practices, security and practical operational issues. Capturing and discussing best practices on these subjects will contribute to a healthy movement in the right direction for those who will develop services for the Clouds.

We describe a substructural logic with ordered, linear, and persistent propositions and then endow a fragment with a committed choice forward-chaining operational interpretation. Exploiting higher-order terms in this metalanguage, we specify the operational semantics of a number of object language features, such as call-by-value, call-by-name, call-by-need, mutable store, parallelism, communication, exceptions and continuations. the specifications exhibit a high degree of uniformity and modularity that allows us to analyze the structural properties required for each feature in isolation. Our substructural framework thereby provides a new methodology for language specification that synthesizes structural operational semantics, abstract machines, and logical approaches.

Today companies apply software systems with more than 14 million Lines of Code (LOC), which are still maintainable and expandable in spite of their size. On the other hand, you will find smaller software systems (> 200,000 LOC), which can either only be adopted with considerable effort, or which cannot be adapted at all. Why are some software systems fraught with maintenance problems while others remain manageable? Based on twenty-four industrial case studies on object-oriented Java projects, this paper identifies, aspects of architectural complexity and describes which route should be taken to keep the architectural complexity of large-scale software systems controllable. In this context it becomes clear that in every case the architectural style is pivotal in determining whether the software system will be maintainable over a longer period and thus prevent software erosion.

We present Chorus, a high-level parallel programming model suitable for irregular, heap-manipulating applications like mesh refinement and epidemic simulations, and JChorus. an implementation of the model on top of Java. One goal of Chorus is to express the dynamic and instance-dependent patterns of memory access that are common in typical irregular applications. Its other focus is locality of effects the property that in many of the same applications, typical imperative commands only affect small, local regions in the shared heap Chorus addresses dynamism and locality through the unifying abstraction of an object assembly: a local region in a shared data structure equipped with a short-lived, speculative thread of control the thread of control in an assembly can only access objects within the assembly. While objects can migrate from assembly to assembly. such migration is local-i.e., objects only move from one assembly to a neighboring one-and does not lead to aliasing. programming primitives include a merge operation, by which an assembly merges with an adjacent assembly, and a split operation, which splits an assembly into smaller ones Our abstractions are race and deadlock-free, and inherently data-centric. We demonstrate that Chorus and JChorus allow natural programming of several important applications exhibiting irregular data-parallelism. We also present an implementation of JChorus based on a many-to-one mapping of assemblies to lower-level threads, and report on preliminary performance numbers.

the Web Service Description Language defines a service as a procedure whose inputs and outputs are structured XML data values, sometimes called documents. In this paper we argue that document-oriented interfaces can be viewed as batches of calls to finer-grained procedural interfaces. Turning this correspondence around, we show that flexible documents can be specified by converting a block of fine-grained invocations into a batch document. Batch blocks can also include conditionals and loops. Our system, Remote Batch Invocation for Web Services, translates object-oriented interfaces into a WSDL describing batches of calls. the WSDL can be used by standard web service clients, but by providing a language extension to support remote batches, our approach features a fully integrated client environment. the result is a powerful infrastructure for web services that directly connects to standard object-oriented interfaces, with tool support to automatically create and decode documents. We have used our infrastructure to create a Web server wrapper for the Amazon Associates Web service, which shows that remote batches can support a clean object-oriented programming model over a stateless web service.

object-oriented languages involve a threefold tradeoff between runtime efficiency, expressiveness (multiple inheritance), and modularity, i.e. open-world assumption (OWA). Runtime efficiency is conditioned by both the implementation technique and compilation scheme. the former specifies the data structures that support method invocation, attribute access and subtype testing. the latter consists of the production line of an executable from the source code. Many implementation techniques have been proposed and several compilation schemes can be considered from fully global compilation under the closed-world assumption (CWA) to separate compilation with dynamic loading under the OWA, with midway solutions. this article reviews a significant subset of possible combinations and presents a systematic, empirical comparison of their respective efficiencies with all other things being equal. the testbed consists of the PRM compiler that has been designed for this purpose. the considered techniques include C++ subobjects, coloring, perfect hashing, binary tree dispatch and caching. A variety of processors were considered. Qualitatively, these first results confirm the intuitive or theoretical abstract assessments of the tested approaches. As expected, efficiency increases as CWA strengthens. From a quantitative standpoint, the results are the first to precisely compare the efficiency of techniques that are closely associated with specific languages like C++ and EIFFEL. they also confirm that perfect hashing should be considered for implementing JAVA and. NET interfaces.

Structural subtyping is popular in research languages, but all mainstream object-oriented languages use nominal subtyping. Since languages with structural subtyping are not in widespread use, the empirical questions of whether and how structural subtyping is useful have thus far remained unanswered. this study aims to provide answers to these questions. We identified several criteria that are indicators that nominally typed programs could benefit from structural subtyping, and performed automated and manual analyses of open-source Java programs based on these criteria. Our results suggest that these programs could indeed be improved with the addition of structural subtyping. We hope this Study will provide guidance for language designers who are considering use of this subtyping discipline.

the rise of the multicore era is catapulting concurrency into mainstream programming. Current programming paradigms build in sequentiality, and as a result, concurrency support in those languages forces programmers into low-level reasoning about execution order. In this paper, we introduce a new programming paradigm in which concurrency is the default. Our Aeminium language uses access permissions to express logical dependencies in the code at a higher level of abstraction than sequential order. therefore compiler/runtime-system can leverage that dependency information to allow concurrent execution. Because in Aeminium programmers specify dependencies rather than control flow, there is no need to engage in difficult, error-prone, and low-level reasoning about execution order or thread interleavings. Developers can instead focus on the design of the program, and benefit as the runtime automatically extracts the concurrency inherent in their design. Copyright © 2009 ACM.
