We propose an architecture for the recognition of three-dimensional objects on the basis of viewer centered representations and temporal associations. Motivated by biological findings and by successful computational implementations we have chosen a viewer centered representation scheme. In contrast to other implementations, special attention is paid to the temporal order of the views, which proves useful for learning and recognition purposes. Our recognition system combines different kinds of artificial neural networks into a four stage architecture: Preprocessing by a Gaborjet transform is followed by an extended Dynamic Link Matching algorithm which implements recognition and learning of the view classes. A STORE network records the temporal order of the views by transforming a sequence of view classes into an item-and-order coding. Subsequently a Gaussian-ARTMAP architecture is used for the classification of the sequences and for their mapping onto object classes by means of supervised learning. the presented results demonstrate that the system is capable to autonomously learn and to discriminate similar objects. Additionally, the examples show how the utilization of the temporal context improves object recognition by making ambiguous views manageable and facilitating an increased insensitiveness against misclassifications.

We describe a view based 3D recognition system providing recognition and pose estimation of holistically learnt objects. Recognition is based upon biologically motivated contour representations providing tolerance against minor perspective distortions. According to this tolerance, interpolation between different views is implicitly given, and only a small set of prototypical normalized views must be learnt. An active camera fixating the object eliminates two translatory degrees of freedom, while normalization of views eliminates distance and rotation with respect to the camera-axis. So we have to find a set of normalized prototypical views covering completely the view sphere for recognition purposes. A simple heuristic is able to select an almost optimal set of views, which can further be improved using stochastic optimization methods. During recognition the tolerant, normalized representation of a presented object is compared withthe prototypes. the best matching prototypes not only provide hypotheses of the object but also give a first estimation of the object pose. A high resolution pose estimation and a precise verification are also possible, if an additional set of reference vectors for the estimation of the view direction is learnt.

Industry is facing a crisis in the design of complex hardware/software systems. Due to the increasing complexity, the gap between the generation of a product idea and the realisation of a working system is expanding rapidly. To manage complexity and to shorten design cycles, industry is forced to look at system level languages towards specification and design. We report on the system level modelling language called POOSL. the language is very expressive and is able to model dynamic hard real time behaviour as well as static (architecture and topology) structure in an objectoriented fashion. the language integrates a process part, based on the process algebra CCS, with a data part, based on the concepts of traditional objectorientedprogramming languages. Unlike many modelling languages today, POOSL is equipped with a complete mathematical semantics. Currently a number of automated software tools (model editing simulator and compiler tools) are available. It is shown how the language and tools allow the estimation of a performance parameter of a datalink protocol.

object-oriented frameworks are a promising new technology to improve software quality and reduce development costs. In contemporary software development frameworks play an increasingly important role. the subject of our paper is an object-oriented ready-to-use framework for robot control systems. Withthe robot control framework especially multitasking control systems can be developed. the framework covers robot control functionality like path planning as well as the control of peripheral devices. It supports standard control hardware such as workstations and PCs with standard operating systems. Furthermore the framework provides an interface for the development of new control software such as a numeric control. the robot control framework has a layered architecture. In order to develop a control system only flexible "hot spots" have to be hooked in the framework. Examples for these flexible aspects are the cycle period of the control loop or the kind of connection to the devices. All the other general robot control components are already part of the framework. Hence they are reused.

An analog 5th order polynomial predistortion circuit with programmable coefficients has been integrated in a 0.8 µm BiCMOS process. the distorter circuit consists of nine bipolar Gilbert cell mixers, and it is capable for linearising power amplifier at baseband or IF.
