the detection of QR codes, a type of 2D barcode, as described in the literature consists merely in the determination of the boundaries of the symbol region in images obtained with the specific intent of highlighting the symbol. However, many important applications such as those related with accessibility technologies or robotics, depends on first detecting the presence of a barcode in an environment. We employ Viola-Jones rapid object detection framework to address the problem of finding QR codes in arbitrarily acquired images. this framework provides an efficient way to focus the detection process in promising regions of the image and a very fast feature calculation approach for pattern classification. An extensive study of variations in the parameters of the framework for detecting finder patterns, present in three corners of every QR code, was carried out. Detection accuracy superior to 90%, with controlled number of false positives, is achieved. We also propose a post-processing algorithm that aggregates the results of the first step and decides if the detected finder patterns are part of QR code symbols. this two-step processing is done in real time. © 2011 IEEE.

Tensor completion is a prevailing method for predicting the unobserved or missing data in incomplete tensors. In many real-world scenarios, incomplete tensors can grow in multiple modes with streaming fashion. Such tensors are generally transformed into a dynamically changing tensor sequence known as Multi-Aspect Streaming Tensor (MAST) sequence. However, existing optimization techniques for a single static tensor completion cannot scale well to large streaming tensor sequences with dynamically growing properties. In this paper, we develop an efficient streaming tensor completion library cuSTC on multiple graphics processing units (GPUs). cuSTC adopts a novel TB-COO storage format with tiling and bit mapping data structure. In addition, cuSTC implements a two-level tensor partition scheme to accelerate the prevalent dynamic alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm for MAST sequence. Finally, cuSTC designs a warp-level reduction scheme to reduce atomic operations in tensor decomposition. We compare cuSTC with SPLATT tensor completion library and achieve 48.69×, 24.22×, 4.54 ×, 3.58×, 12.26 × performance speedup on five real-world datasets. © 2022 IEEE.

the problem of view clustering is concerned with finding connected sets of overlapping views in a collection of photographs. the view clusters can be used to organize a photo collection, traverse through a collection, or for 3D structure estimation. For large datasets, geometric matching of all image pairs via pose estimation to decide on content overlap is not viable. the problem becomes even more acute if the views in the collection are separated by wide baselines, i.e. we do not have a dense view sampling of the 3D scene that leads to increase in computational cost of epipolar geometry estimation and matching. We propose an efficient algorithm for clustering of such many weakly overlapping views, based on opportunistic use of epipolar geometry estimation for only a limited number of image pairs. We cast the problem of view clustering as finding a tree structure graph over the views, whose weighted links denote likelihood of view overlap. the optimization is done in an iterative fashion starting from an minimum spanning tree based on photometric distances between image pairs. At each iteration step, we rule out edges with low confidence of overlap between the respective views, based on epipolar geometry estimates. the minimum spanning tree is recomputed and the process is repeated until there is no further change in the link structure. We show results on the images in the 2010 Nokia Grand Challenge Dataset that contains images with low overlap with each other. © 2011 IEEE.

Face recognition is a multidisciplinary field that involves subjects in neuroscience, computer science and statistical learning. Some recent research in neuroscience has indicated that the ability of our memory relies on the capability of orthogonalizing (pattern separation) and completing (pattern prototyping) partial patterns in order to encode, store and recall information. From a computational viewpoint, pattern separation can be cast in the subspace learning area while pattern prototyping is closer to manifold learning methods. So, subspace (or manifold) learning techniques have a close biological inspiration and reasonability in terms of computational methods to possibly exploring and understanding the human behavior of recognizing faces. therefore, the aim of this paper is threefold. Firstly, we review some theoretical aspects about perceptual and cognitive processes related to the mechanisms of pattern separation and pattern prototyping. then, the paper presents the basic idea of manifold learning and its relationship with subspace learning with focus on the dimensionality reduction problem. Finally, we present the Discriminant Principal Component Analysis (DPCA) and the Self-Organized Manifold Mapping (SOMM) algorithm to exemplify respectively pattern separation and completion techniques. We show experimental results to demonstrate the effectiveness of DPCA and SOMM algorithms on well-framed face image analysis. © 2011 IEEE.

We present ScorePerformer, an encoder-decoder transformer with hierarchical style encoding heads for controllable rendering of expressive piano music performances. We design a tokenized representation of symbolic score and performance music, the Score Performance Music tuple (SPMuple), and validate a novel way to encode the local performance tempo in a local note time window. Along with the encoding, we extend a transformer encoder with multi-level maximum mean discrepancy variational autoencoder style modeling heads that learn performance style at the global, bar, beat, and onset levels for finegrained performance control. To offer an interpretation of the learned latent spaces, we introduce performance direction marking classifiers that associate vectors in the latent space with direction markings to guide performance rendering through the model. Evaluation results show the importance of the architectural design choices and demonstrate that ScorePerformer produces diverse and coherent piano performances that follow the control input. © I. Social media is gaining popularity as a medium of communication before, during, and after crises. In several recent disasters, it has become evident that social media sites like Twitter and Facebook are an important source of information, and in cases they have even assisted in relief efforts. We propose a novel approach to identify a subset of active users during a crisis who can be tracked for fast access to information. Using a Twitter dataset that consists of 12.9 million tweets from 5 countries that are part of the "Arab spring" movement, we show how instant information access can be achieved by user identification along two dimensions: user's location and the user's affinity towards topics of discussion. through evaluations, we demonstrate that users selected by our approach generate more information and the quality of the information is better than that of users identified using state-of-the-art techniques. In the spring semester of 1994, faculty members of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and of the Department of Electrical and computer Engineering at Iowa State University (Ames, IA), participated in an exchange of two courses using two-day television as the medium. the equipment was a compressed video system connected via a T-1 grade line implemented over the new Iowa Communications Network. Local studio classroom cameras and microphones were also used in the activity. In this exchange, students from both campuses participated in the classes and were able to ask pertinent questions. Additional contact through electronic mail, telephone, and facsimile facilitated the learning. 'Help' sessions were also implemented over the two-way system. this exchange provided some professional development for two faculty members in a rapidly changing field.

Voxelization is a standard representation technique for arbitrary geometries on Cartesian space. It is typically used as a pre-processor for any solver in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) problems. Voxelization typically is a computationally intensive and can consume significant amount of time on complex geometries on grids of high resolutions. In this paper, we propose a novel GPU acceleration method for both surface and solid voxelization aimed at CFD solvers dependent on the popular Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). Towards that, we design new mechanisms for data parallelism that can allow efficient SIMT execution on modern GPUs. In contrast to prior works, which typically extract parallelism in the space of the surface geometry, our method works at a finer grain where we extract parallelism in the space of the Cartesian fluid mesh. this leads to higher degree of parallelism which provides significant performance benefits. Our method is able to compute surface voxelization for a benchmark geometry (Stanford Bunny) in 16.8 ms at a grid size of 10243• Our method for solid voxelization on the same geometry takes 1546.3 ms. Our implementation is able to extract around 7.14 TFLOPS single precision (around 50% of peak) performance on a NVIDIA V100 GPU. © 2022 IEEE.
