Hierarchical dynamic simplification (HDS) is a new approach to the problem of simplifying arbitrary polygonal environments. HDS operates dynamically, retessellating the scene continuously as the user's viewing pos...

Our goal is to develop physically based lighting models and perceptually based rendering procedures for computergraphicsthat will produce synthetic images that are visually and measurably indistinguishable from real-world images. Fidelity of the physical simulation is of primary concern. Our research framework is subdivided into three sub-sections: the local light reflection model, the energy transport simulation, and the visual display algorithms. the first two subsections are physically based, and the last is perceptually based. We emphasize the comparisons between simulations and actual measurements, the difficulties encountered, and the need to utilize the vast amount of psychophysical research already conducted. Future research directions are enumerated. We hope that results of this research will help establish a more fundamental, scientific approach for future rendering algorithms. this presentation describes a chronology of past research in global illumination and how parts of our new system are currently being developed.
Force feedback coupled with visual display allows people to interact intuitiv ely with complex virtual environments. For this synergy of haptics and graphics to flourish, however, haptic systems must be capable of mod...

Public involvement of water resources projects typically presents the engineering, environmental, and economic conditions of a proposed plan in an effort to gain public support and agreement. Often, public response hinges on project aesthetics that are difficult to convey using engineering descriptions and design drawings. Communication of project features in a cost effective manner is the primary benefit of a computer visualization approach our company calls 'Visioneering.' the technique can incorporate the engineering accuracy inherent in improvement plans by computer aligning actual CADD drawings with photographs taken from either the air or the ground. From a known reference point, the improvement plans are aligned withthe photograph and appropriate visual textures for concrete, rock, vegetation, railing, and other to-be-constructed features are added by a graphics specialist. this paper presents computer visualization techniques that have been successfully used for public acceptance of water resources projects having flood control, recreational, and environmental components.
