One of the problems presented when circuit simulation is used to analyze a complex electromechanical system is the amount of work required to represent each device with an adequate precision level. the calculation process required to customize each model block to represent a particular device is a time consuming task that asks for accurate knowledge of all device and model parameters and of all the trade-offs in the model set-up. the solution presented in this paper uses a general purpose simulation tool, such as SPICE, and develops a pre-processor program able to generate the SPICE input listing, using the models already available for each component or circuit block in the electromechanical system to be modeled. the program G-MES helps the designer in the selection of the best trade-off and the calculation of the selected block or component model parameters in a complete interactive way. Once the system model is completed, G-MES provides a SPICE compatible file, with the model of the complete electromechanical drive system, ready for circuit simulation.

Modern design concepts are focused on the product life-cycle, such that all the aspects of designed systems and their corresponding dependencies are considered. these conditions are fulfilled by the concurrent engineering (CE) approach, which creates a new context for design and management according to which the life-cycle design is performed by functional and disciplinary heterogeneous teams. this results in a new concept for computer aided design (CAD) that must support system life-cycle analysis and design. Defining the CE context for electronics, this paper determines the main elements of the CE-CAD concept, and the basic functional architecture of the corresponding environment in creating a total product design, highlighting, as a result, the concept of a virtual 'world' distributed manufacturing enterprise.

We describe an educational system for teaching and learning robotic systems. Multimedia resources were used to construct a virtual laboratory where users are able to use functionalities of a virtual robotic arm, by moving and clicking the mouse without caring about the detailed internal robot operation. Moreover, through the multimedia system the user can interact with a real robot arm. the engineering students are the target public of the developed system. With its contents and interactive capabilities, it has been used as a support to the traditional face-to-face classes on the subject of robotics. It is first introduced the metaphor of virtual laboratory used in the system. Next, it is described the graphical and multimedia environment approach: an interactive graphic user interface with a 3D environment for simulation. Design and implementation issues of the real-time interactive multimedia learning system, which supports the W3C SMIL standard for presenting the real-time multimedia teaching material, are described. Finally, some preliminary conclusions and possible future works from this research are presented.

the use of progressive, on-demand image dissemination techniques can support efficient dissemination of very large images across networks. In this paper we examine the effectiveness of various design options in developing such on-demand dissemination systems. We show that the choice of the design options can have a profound impact on the efficient use of client, server, and network resources. Based on our performance evaluation experiments, we recommend that efficient dissemination can be achieved by tiling images with a session-based progressive wavelet compression algorithm, delivering the compressed data to tiles in a round-robin manner, and performing custom client-side virtual memory management for image data to improve image data retrieval speed.

In the last few years, digital systems, especially computers, have been incorporated into commercial and military aircraft flight control systems, and industrial controllers. A system used in a typical critical application is the architecture of the X-29 aircraft flight control system, based on triple modular redundancy. the control system uses three identical computers performing the same operations. the results from each computer are examined and the output from the system is formed via a majority vote of the three results. For such a system, used in critical applications, it is extremely important, besides other evaluations, to plan the maintenance logistic support, knowing the failure rates and cost of all its blocks, the system quantity and installation sites, possible stock and spare source locations, etc.

Tactile images are an important mode of information for the blind and low vision community but many of the common methods have high acquisition and material costs. this design inquiry looks at the use of a Cricut cutting machine to layer cardstock for creating tangible pictures and coloring pages. this report discusses the development of the technique followed by the corresponding production considerations, design iterations, pilot feedback, and limitations. We believe that in certain contexts this technique could be a viable method for conveying tactile information, especially in the context of early learning activities where practice is required for gaining life-long tactile graphicacy skills that can translate to reading maps and information graphics later in life. Additionally, the low acquisition cost of this method has value to parents and educators of blind and low vision children as a cheap DIY way to make tactile content.

Circuit module design is one of the most important topics in electronic education. During their study, students have to design, simulate, realize and document a functional circuit. the education includes lectures and laboratory exercises. On the lectures, the students are acquainted with the design rules and the use of OrCAD software. the lecturer uses a PC-projector for the PowerPoint show and for the CAD program, an overhead projector and the traditional blackboard. the lectures give an introduction to computer aided design and a guide to the use of the familiar OrCAD software. the first, encapsulating CAD systems, shows the place of the available tools in the design flow, and lets the students know the tasks that have to be fulfilled during the design. CAD systems are helpful tools to make the human work easier, but the human role is always accentuated. Design begins with an idea and defining the circuit function. After that, there are a sequence of tasks that have to be finished before manufacturing. To complete them, databases and some supplemental works are required. the students learn how to use the CAD, how to get the required supplemental information for their work and finally they build their own circuit.

During technological processing, performances and costs are affected by errors due to technological variations and the instability of the information system components that monitor the process. the hybrid integrated circuit (HIC) technological process for the automobile industry is entirely automatic. Studies of this process determined the main reasons for errors (nonuniformity of materials, variation of environmental conditions, high level noises that appear during data acquisition, and the reaction of machines to system commands). One solution that is both reliable and very cheap is assured by one upgrade of the information system using local elements based on the Intel 80C852 microcontroller. this solution realizes correction of the errors during local data acquisition and cancellation of data transmission errors in the technological process. Also, intelligent elements built with the Intel 80C852 microcontroller were added to the functional adjustments to realize monitoring of the environmental conditions and of the statistical data picked up during the working period of the final products. this paper presents a data acquisition local module built with an adaptive filter, the associated software with very short execution time, the generalized product model, the most frequent error types at several points of the technological process, the central place for adjustment and comparative results obtained after the modernization process.

In this paper, the modeling and simulation of a switched reluctance machine is described. Modeling and simulation is an already accepted method in the design of drive systems. the entire drive, including power converter, SRM, mechanical load and control are modeled in one multilevel model. the paper explains why use is made of a multilevel package for modeling and simulation of a complete drive system. the application of mechatronic systems requires more modeling effort compared to modeling of regular electronic systems. this is caused by the difference in models for the electrical machine, the power converter and the control of the drive. A multilevel model is applied which combines the circuit model, a block diagram and programming language, and thereby eases the modeling process. Due to the required small fine step in the simulation of the power converter, the total simulation time is large. therefore, a simulation program must used, which has special ideal models for the semiconductor switches and thus reduces total simulation time. Results from the simulation show the internal waveforms of the converter, such as the rotor angle dependent inductance of the stator, angular frequency of the rotor and the torque produced by the SRM.
