the recording interface between neurons and an implanted microelectrode recording site is often compromised due to gliosis, rendering the implant nonfunctional under chronic conditions. the objective of this project is to design novel microelectrodes that will minimize gliosis under chronic implantation. We test the hypothesis that gliosis can be minimized or eliminated by reducing the cross-sectional area of the chronic implant. Current microelectrodes for recording chronic action potentials range from 25 /spl mu/m to 100 /spl mu/m or more in diameter. We fabricated neural implants by coating 12 /spl mu/m stainless steel microwires with polyglycolic acid (PGA), a biodegradable polymer, resulting in a final diameter of 25 /spl mu/m. Twelve rats were implanted with the PGA coated electrode on the left hemisphere in the somatosensory cortex and with the regular 25 /spl mu/m stainless microelectrode in the right hemisphere. the rat brains were perfused at 4 weeks after implantation and stained for glial fibrilliary acidic protein (GFAP) and microtubule associated protein-2 (MAP-2). the microelectrodes coated with PGA produced minimal gliosis compared to the conventional 25 /spl mu/m wire and other silicon based microelectrodes. We conclude that ultra-thin neural implants with minimum cross-sectional area coated with PGA will greatly improve the functionality of microelectrodes under chronic conditions.

Holter signals correspond to long-term electrocardiograph (ECG) registers. Manual inspection of such signals is difficult because of the enormous quantity of beats involved. throughout the literature several methods of automatically detecting and separating the significant beats using unsupervised learning were proposed. An important part of the unsupervised learning problem is determining the number of constituent clusters which best describe the data. In this paper we concentrate on the problem of the number of arrhythmia beats-clusters selection presented in Holter ECG. We apply and compare several criteria for assessing the number of clusters and we show that, with a Gaussian mixture model, the approach is able to select 'an optimal' number of arrhythmia beats and so partition a Holter ECG. the following criteria has been examined: Bayesian selection method, Akaike's information criteria, minimum description length, minimum message length, fuzzy hyper volume, evidence density and partition coefficient. We conclude that only minimum description length and Bayesian selection method are suitable for our real-world electrocardiogram data. In order to validate the procedure, an experimental comparative study is carried out, utilizing records from the MIT database.

Information theory was introduced by Claude Shannon in 1948 to precisely characterize data flows in communications systems. the same mathematics can also be fruitfully applied to molecular biology problems. We start with the problem of understanding how proteins interact with DNA at specific sequences called binding sites. Information theory allows us to make an average picture of the binding sites and this can be shown with a computer graphic called a (http://***//spl sim/toms/***#sequence/spl ***/logo). Sequence logos show how strongly parts of a binding site are conserved, on a scale in bits of information. they have been used to study a variety of genetic control systems. More recently the same mathematics has been used to look at individual binding sites using another computer graphic called a sequence walker. (http://***//spl sim/toms/***#sequence/spl ***/walker). Sequence walkers are being used to predict whether changes in human genes cause mutations or are neutral polymorphisms. It may soon be possible to predict the degree of colon cancer by this method. Information theory can also be used to understand the relationship between the binding energy dissipated when two molecules stick together and the amount of sequence conservation of the molecules measured in bits. 'Using the Second Law of thermodynamics, this relationship can be expressed as the efficiency of the molecular interaction. Surprisingly, many molecular systems including genetic systems, visual pigments and motility proteins have efficiencies near 70%. A purely geometrical explanation of this result shows that although biological systems are selected to have the highest efficiency, it is restricted to 70% because having precisely distinguishable molecular states is more important.

the primary objective of Armadillo is to provide a convenient way to quickly analyze musical sounds on an inexpensive computer without the need for specialized hardware. the development of high-speed computers with excellent graphics and high quality audio I/O for the general consumer in the last few years has made this possible. While a number of analysis programs are available on Intel or Macintosh platforms, there are few that are dedicated to the analysis of musical sounds as Armadillo is. © 1999 International computer Music conference, ICMC proceedings. the University of York, UK has an active Music Technology Group engaged in research and teaching across a range of different subject areas within electroacoustic and computer music. In 1998 the group received substantial support from the Higher Education Funding Council of England in association with Silicon graphics, Inc. (sgi) to update their research infrastructure. this support has enabled the installation of a high performance computing network exclusively dedicated to research and postgraduate teaching in music technology and electroacoustic music, and has established a new post of Music Systems Administrator/Programmer. the computer network includes a Silicon graphics eight processor Origin 2000 high performance parallel computer, with 4G memory, 0.5TB fibre-channel disk storage, and a network of 10 02 workstations each with 8 channel audio input and output. this paper provides a full description of the current facility at the University of York, UK for electroacoustic and computer music composition, research and teaching. © 1999 International computer Music conference, ICMC proceedings. Two methods of time-variant spectral analysis have been applied to the synthesis of three different percussion sounds: chime, timpani, and symbal. A phase vocoder method which determines modal frequencies by phase calculation has proved superior in resolving frequencies to a spectral peak tracking method, where frequencies are determined by spectral peak interpolation. Ordinary time-variant additive synthesis is used to synthesize stretched versions of the sounds. Syntheses of the chime sound about the same with either analysis method but synthesis of the timpani and cymbal are markedly improved in naturalness when based on the phase vocoder analysis. © 1999 International computer Music conference, ICMC proceedings. Web-based training systems offer enhanced functionality for co-operative learning. Nevertheless, these system approaches are mostly dedicated to distributed information presentation, exploring the potentials of current Internet/WWW technologies (e.g. Java, HTML, VRML). this article describes a research project at the computer graphics Center (ZGDV) in collaboration with Small and Medium Enterprises in the Maritime application area with the objective to enhance the interaction and demonstration quality of training by integrating a distributed simulation environment into the training scenario. this training scenario is based on HLA/RTI while Clients are developed using Visual C++ as well as the Java development kit.

this paper develops the theory and digital waveguide implementation for modeling threedimensional (3D) sound emission from wind instrument air columns. It is shown that the current acoustic theory regarding sound radiation from ducts and holes can be implemented in the digital waveguide context using properly designed digital filters. Each radiating sound source or hole requires a first-or second-order digital filter to account for angular- and frequencydependent pressure distribution characteristics. Sound propagation delay from the source to the pickup is modeled with a delay line and possibly a fractional-delay interpolation filter. An additional digital filter to model attenuation in free space can also be used. the results of this model compare well with frequency-domain polar radiation calculations. A simplified system appropriate for real-time synthesis is developed that allows continuous pickup movement within an anechoic 3D space. © 1999 International computer Music conference, ICMC proceedings. A Vector Unit (VU) for the high performance 3D graphics computing has been developed. Four fMAC (floating-point Multiply-Accumulate) units which execute multiply-add operation with one throughput, one fDIV (floating-point Divide) unit which executes division and square root operations with 6 cycles at 300 MHz and 128 bits × 32 words fReg (floating-point register file) are implemented. this architecture delivers a peak performance of 2.44 GFLOPS at 300MHz.

this paper describes an execution unit capable of computing the Paeth predictor, as used in the portable network graphics (PNG) standard. PNG is a rather new, lossless compression method for real-world pictures. It features five prediction schemes, of which the modified Paeth predictor is the most computational intensive. this paper focuses on a hardware implementation of the Paeth predictor and a hardware Paeth codec capable of computing three different quantities: the Paeth predictor of three inputs, the difference of the current pixel and the Paeth predictor of the other inputs (coding), and the sum of the coded input and the Paeth predictor of the other three inputs (decoding). the proposed Paeth codec takes two cycles, where a cycle is comparable to an general purpose ALU cycle. Depending on the mode of operation, the proposed mechanism produces the predictor or the (de/en)-coded pixel value.
