We present a method that uses measured scene radiance and global illumination in order to add new objects to light-based models with correct lighting. the method uses a high dynamic range image-based model of the scene, rather than synthetic light sources, to illuminate the new objects. To compute the illumination, the scene is considered as three components: the distant scene, the local scene, and the synthetic objects. the distant scene is assumed to be photometrically unaffected by the objects, obviating the need for reflectance model information. the local scene is endowed with estimated reflectance model information so that it can catch shadows and receive reflected light from the new objects. Renderings are created with a standard global illumination method by simulating the interaction of light amongst the three components. A differential rendering technique allows for good results to be obtained when only an estimate of the local scene reflectance properties is known. We apply the general method to the problem of rendering synthetic objects into real scenes. the light-based model is constructed from an approximate geometric model of the scene and by using a light probe to measure the incident illumination at the location of the synthetic objects. the global illumination solution is then composited into a photograph of the scene using the differential rendering technique. We conclude by discussing the relevance of the technique to recovering surface reflectance properties in uncontrolled lighting situations. Applications of the method include visual effects, interior design, and architectural visualization.

A new undergraduate computer engineering curriculum, ICED, is being introduced at the University of Rhode Island. the main feature of the curriculum is a design project spanning the last three years of the major. this gives continuity to a student's studies: they will always know why they are learning a particular topic, and how it fits into the big picture. It also introduces them to long-term projects, and the requisite good documentation and communication habits necessary for its completion. the project to be undertaken is the design, simulation and construction of a computer and its compiler, including the design of its instruction set. Further, the various students ' computers will be networked together during the final integration phase of the project. thus, several aspects of computer architecture are treated in depth. Students will learn to make hardware/software design tradeoffs, as well as get hands-on experience with hardware. A key element of the design experience is the use of modern CAD tools. the Mentor graphics CAD tool suite will be used throughout the curriculum. By standardizing on one set of tools, the time for the students to learn the tools is amortized over the entire curriculum. the curriculum has received funding from the National Science Foundation, and has been formally approved by the University. Students began the curriculum in Fall, 1997. this paper gives the rationale of ICED in depth, and describes the core courses, their activities and use of CAD tools, and how they interrelate to achieve the goals. the current status of ICED is also reviewed.

Nowadays, educators in both schools and industry are to educating students and employees in new trends in computer technology using CBT (computer-based training). CBT can offer an extremely cost-effective approach for both instructional development as well as delivery. this paper demonstrates the development of a CBT material on Electric Circuits using Authoware Professional for Windows. Authoware is an object oriented-authoring tool that supports the incorporation of text, graphics, animation, audio, and video.

Six computer assisted instruction modules are available on the Internet that provide tutorials and demonstrations for non-linear circuit analysis and design. these modules introduce the student in a sequence to the concept of a non-linear two terminal device (one port) and its analysis and of a non-linear three terminal device (two port) and its analysis. In addition, through interactive, graphics driven animation, the user can be provided experience in the design of circuits withthese non-linear devices. the specific devices presented to illustrate these concepts are the pn diode and the bipolar junction transistor;there are three modules available for each. these modules are available on the Internet, either by anonymous FTP or through the auspices of NEEDS, the National Engineering Education Delivery System, being developed by the NSF SYNthESIS Engineering Education Coalition.

the Interactive Semiconductor Process Overview (ISPO) is a multimedia CD-ROM package that is based on a successful Semiconductor Processing Overview course developed through a partnership between the Texas A&M University System and several major Texas semiconductor manufacturers. the ISPO focuses on the basic process terminology, the key equipment components and the most sensitive quality issues if each major processing step. the ISPO includes a customized course management system and navigation system to assist the course coordinator and student maximize the learning experience. the material is designed withthe potential for three different levels of instruction. the technical content is divided into modules corresponding to major process steps or topics, with each process module further modularized into standard sub-modules. the ISPO's interactive, visual emphasis is developed and maintained through a combination of 3-D graphics, scanned images, video clips, computer-generated animations and visual simulations. the animations depict the essence of various technical concepts with all spurious elements removed. the visual simulations are developed from physically accurate mathematical models and correctly scaled graphics. the visual simulations allow students to vary input control parameters to pre-selected values and observe the resulting effect on the process.

Describes a project funded by the Technology Reinvestment Project (TRP) under the Manufacturing Education Technology (MET) component to design, build and evaluate interactive multimedia courseware for manufacturing education. Interactive multimedia is defined as the combination of computer-based text, sound, graphics, animation, video and simulation. Commercial and defense industries along with a professional society are collaborating on the project in an effort to address important dual-use issues. Advanced media technologies are being exploited to create virtual, time-shifted and/or remote visits to real-world manufacturing systems. the foundations for our efforts and the experiences in the first year of this effort are discussed in detail.

the traditional use of differential and integral vector calculus as the basis for undergraduate electromagnetic courses is reconsidered. A compelling case is made for improved student understanding by basing introductory electromagnetics on two mutually supporting principles-spatial discretization and numeric formulation. Dividing space into discrete cells facilitates casting the laws of electromagnetics in terms of lumped element circuit theory. the vector nature of fields evolves naturally from the behavior of these discrete circuit elements. Numeric formulations for discretized space similar to those used by electromagnetic professionals take the form of remarkably simple models and algorithms. Powerful computer engines and graphics operate on these formulations to solve "real world" applications and bring the physical concepts to life. this "work in progress" is presented to stimulate audience comments and discussion.

Summary form only given. the advances in computer technologies have led educators in both schools and industry to look at different ways to educate students and employees. the new method is known as CBT (computer-based training), or CBI (computer-based instruction). We demonstrate the development of a computer-based training material on electric circuits using Authorware Professional for Windows (Macromedia, San Francisco, CA). Authorware is an object-oriented authoring tool that supports the incorporation of text, graphics, animation audio, and video. this project is funded by NSF through Greenfield Coalition.
