A pair of courses, Foundations of Engineering I and II, form the two-semester engineering component of Foundation Coalition's integrated freshman year at the University of Alabama (UA). these courses replace two existing freshman engineering courses which are devoted to computer programming and engineering graphics. In order to present a more realistic and interesting introduction to engineering as a profession, the courses focuses on the engineering design process. Both courses are organized around four three-week-long design projects. the projects are selected from a variety of areas, covering the breadth of engineering disciplines taught at UA. the design projects also complement the current subject matter of the integrated mathematics, chemistry and physics courses. For example, while both physics and chemistry are introducing the ideal gas law, the engineering project involves the design of a compressed natural gas tank for an automotive application. Each design project requires a team report in written and oral form. the students are introduced to a variety of computer tools to aid their presentation of reports, such as word processors, spreadsheets and presentation packages. Student access to the Internet and e-mail is also provided. this paper provides an in-depth examination of the first of these two courses. It includes a brief overview of the relationships that exist between the integrated courses in the freshman year a detailed examination of the nature and scope of the design projects included within the course, and feedback from both faculty and students on the merits of the approach.

Integrated circuits (ICs) are fabricated by a sophisticated series of process steps. A complete education in the field of semiconductor processing requires a thorough understanding of the fabrication process. However, due to space, equipment, and budget constraints, hands-on microelectronics instruction is usually limited, despite high student demand. To alleviate these resource limitations and to enhance the educational experience, an environment which simulates IC fabrication instruction in a physical laboratory using interactive multimedia is currently being developed at the Georgia Institute of Technology Microelectronics Research Center. this Virtual Cleanroom will allow students to use a high-performance workstation (equipped with the necessary audio, video and graphics capability) to simulate the fabrication of an IC. Simulation modules for each of the unit process steps used in IC fabrication are being constructed on the X-Mosaic platform, thereby making the courseware accessible through Internet via the World-Wide Web. this has allowed the incorporation of a variety of other IC process simulators into the Virtual Cleanroom environment, enabling the student to visualize the results of performing a step while simultaneously learning the physical activities involved.

Application of engineering to design "real world" situations is the goal of most engineering design courses. Unfortunately, achieving this is easier said than done, particularly for situations including land use and engineering structures. computer imaging provides one alternative that has potential for bridging the gap between an instructor's view of a situation and that of the student. Changing conditions are often used in "what if ...?" problems related to runoff and erosion. For example, runoff and erosion estimates from a forested condition are compared with results from a developed condition. A common difficulty in explanation and analysis of such problems is difficulty in describing the land use. Either the instructor provides a description that is almost word for word like one shown in a textbook's table or the students have widely varying perceptions as to what the situation is. In either case, students are unable to demonstrate engineering judgement. thus, little applicability to real world problems exists. the paper describes application of computer imaging to improve engineering design associated with soil and water engineering. Specific objectives include the following: investigate feasibility of available imaging methods to improve educational delivery; evaluate use of imaging for applications in soil and water engineering; demonstrate applications that relate engineering judgement to real world problems.

the Materials Science and Engineering Department (MSE) comprehensive undergraduate writing- and communications-across-the-curriculum program is integrated into eight required MSE courses over students' three years of study in the Department. the program focuses mostly on the development of students' discipline-specific writing skills but also includes instruction in public speaking, interpersonal communications in the workplace, creative scientific thinking, and collaborative writing. In addition, the program includes faculty training and support for integrating writing into technical coursework, developing writing assignments, assisting students in revising their own writing, and grading written assignments. Our writing and communications program is integrated into eight required MSE courses in such a way that the writing and communication tasks in each class do not too often duplicate those addressed in subsequent program classes. We are developing methods for teaching course content using writing and communications as learning tools in such a way that time for technical content instruction is not sacrificed.

Scientific visualization techniques translate large and/or multidimensional numerical data sets into images. Properly prepared images enable the user to more readily correlate information, determine cause-and-effect relationships, and gain insight into the underlying principles embodied in the data. Concepts from scientific visualization have been used to develop CircuitViz, a tool for visualizing the behavior of dynamic circuits. this circuit visualization technique places a 2D circuit schematic in a 3D coordinate system. the third spatial dimension displays circuit variables (current, voltage, power, stored energy) directly on the schematic diagram, and animation displays the temporal dimension. the visual cues are designed to be intuitively appealing and to reinforce understanding of device operation. the technique, implemented as a Mathematica package, was pilot-tested for two weeks in a second-quarter sophomore circuits class studying the transient response of first- and second-order circuits. the animated imagery stimulated student interest in the material, and students made insightful observations about how circuits work as a result of viewing the global operation of the circuits.

In spring of 1994, the Department of Electrical and computer Engineering began the process of surveying both graduating seniors and alumni from the graduating classes of 1992, 1988, 1984 and 1980. these surveys were again distributed in spring of 1995 to alumni in the classes of 1993, 1989, 1985, and 1981, as well as all students enrolled in the senior engineering design course. the primary purpose of the surveys distributed to our alumni and graduating seniors was to begin the process of "assessment of student learning outcomes". the department has developed four primary educational objectives. these educational objectives are intended to probe not only our students attainment of knowledge specific to the field, but also to cause them to reflect upon how those aspects of education unique to Marquette University as a Catholic, Jesuit institution of higher learning have fostered their attitudes toward their jobs and their fellow humans. From the objectives, several assessment criteria were proposed which then led to the development of the survey instruments that were used. A secondary purpose of these surveys was to determine alumni attitudes to various features of the electrical engineering curriculum and to see if these attitudes change as our alumni progress through their careers. A third purpose of the survey was to develop some demographic information about our alumni. the specific details of the graduate exit surveys and alumni surveys used by the Department of Electrical and computer Engineering are discussed including the educational objectives, assessment criteria, and resulting survey instruments. In addition, partial results from these surveys are described particularly referencing the success of the department in attaining its educational objectives and as a planning document for curriculum modification.

To better prepare graduates for a rapidly changing global market place, concurrent engineering (CE) and computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) concepts have been fully integrated into the manufacturing engineering technology (MET) program at Western Washington University. Freshman students are taught solid modeling, design concepts and basic CIM in their introductory graphics courses. Sophomore students are taught the basics of CIM with an introduction to computer numerical control (CNC) machining, data file translation and the production of real tooling and parts. Junior students have an entire slate of design oriented basic engineering mechanics, fluid power and CNC machining courses. A real shop floor atmosphere has been constructed for the CIM, CNC and robotics classes with a new Haas CNC vertical mill with an automatic tool changer, a new Mazak turning center, a new Brown and Sharp coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and a used ASEA/ABB articulated arm robot. Senior students complete their studies with courses in robotics and automation, CIM, quality assurance, advanced CNC and a capstone senior project with industrial sponsors. Manufacturing students interact with electronics and plastics engineering technology students, industrial design students and industrial technology students. the paper describes the development of the CIM/CNC/Robotics laboratory, the integration of CIM and CE throughout the entire MET curriculum, the faculty development accompanying such changes, the faculty team effort to make these changes, course changes and examples of projects exemplifying CE and CIM in the past year.

the Courseware Development Studio is part of the NSF Synthesis Coalition and has been authoring engineering courseware since 1990. One primary goal of the Coalition has been the creation of a nationally accessible database of academic courseware (NEEDS). A further mission of the Studio is to provide courseware authors with examples of assessable quality courseware. While the courseware is being developed, the type of delivery system that will be used to present the material in a classroom must be decided. Some of the Studio's experiences and difficulties using a dedicated multimedia classroom are detailed. this setup is compared with a portable display system that can be used in a conventional classroom. the Internet is becoming a valuable resource and an integral part of today's educational environment. Setup procedures that the studio had to follow to become connected to the World Wide Web are outlined. In addition, instructions on how to access the NEEDS database via the WWW are given. Suggestions on how to avoid problems between high-powered authoring tools and database accessibility by potential users are explored. In order to maintain a high degree of quality on the database some guidelines are outlined for evaluating courseware. Courseware evaluation is intended to guarantee high standards in learning materials, and to serve as a reference for authors during the development phase.

this paper presents the results of two semesters of experiments involving distance teaming and distance teaching. In the Fall of 1994, students from senior-level digital signal processing classes at the University of Colorado and at George Mason University participated in joint project teams to design solutions to digital signal processing problems involving real data. In the spring of 1995, a Special Topics in Digital Signal Processing course continued this joint experiment, with joint teaching by Professor Etter and Professor Orsak. Lectures were shared by video tape, and the Internet was used for general questions and comments between the students and the professors. Mosaic pages were developed relative to the classwork and were available on the World Wide Web. We believe that these experiences are excellent opportunities for students to prepare for the jobs, since companies frequently team their employees over widespread regions when undertaking large and detailed projects. At present, these industrial enterprises use leased analog and digital communication lines but they will no doubt switch to computer networks as the Information Superhighway becomes a reality. From a pedagogical point of view, this modern approach to teaming requires that educators develop in their graduates the skills required for this new reality. these skills include, among others, identifying expertise and interest within a larger distributed group, segmenting tasks in a meaningful fashion, integrating designs across a high-speed network verifying performance against specifications, and compiling and writing a comprehensive final report. the joint teaching efforts also allow universities to pool their talent, and hence, students have access to the wider pool of topics that are represented by a group of faculty at various universities who are interested in joint teaching.

In the early part of January 1993, engineers and historians at Georgia Tech joined together to draft a proposal to SUCCEED, a national engineering education coalition funded by the National Science Foundation. this novel collaboration of academics who do not usually work together imagined an experimental course that would integrate humanities and engineering education in order to provide a broad context for understanding the role of engineering and the engineering profession in modern society. Primarily aimed at beginning students in electrical engineering, this pilot project would develop a set of modular units, each one of which incorporate materials on engineering design or on issues related to engineering professionalism, and which would link that information to economic, political or social considerations. In this fashion, the creative work of engineers, past and present, could be analyzed both in terms of technical detail and in terms of the human context in which engineering always takes place. the course was presented at Georgia Tech for the first time in the spring Quarter of 1995, and it will be repeated in the Winter Quarter of 1996. We present a progress report that describes the planning, organization and objectives of the course, and that concludes with some observations on the work yet to be done in order to make the course materials we have developed usable by others.
