the paper is dedicated to theoretical research of spatial indexing methods in conformity to three dimensional scenes arising in CAD/CAM systems, robotics, virtual and augmented reality applications. Special attention is given to the decomposition methods based on regular dynamic octrees. A particular version of the octrees is described and investigated to satisfy to the efficiency requirements for typical spatial queries in complex dynamic scenes with the extended borders objects. To perform the needed complexity analysis, the developed octree structure is analyzed against typical spatial queries like collision detection, frustum culling. To obtain more relevant estimates of the complexity on average rather than known pessimistic estimates in worst case, model scene datasets have been introduced. they assume uniform distribution of equal size objects over the scene volume and, being parametric, allow simulation of wide range of industry meaningful scenes. Some auxiliary lemmas about octree depth and distribution of the scene objects over octree levels have been proven based on probabilistic analysis. Final theorem statements provides for the complexity estimates of query evaluation for the model scenes. the obtained results show that asymptotic complexity grows with the object sizes and the scene occupancy. However, the estimates on average improve known results in worst case and can be considered as a theoretical background to introduce the investigated indexing structures to practical applications. © 2015 Institute of Physics and Technology.

Infographics, such as bar charts and line graphs, occur often in popular media and are a rich knowledge source that should be accessible to users. Unfortunately, information retrieval research has focused on the retrieval of text documents and images, with almost no attention specifically directed toward the retrieval of information graphics. Our work is the first to directly tackle the retrieval of infographics and to design a system that takes into account their unique characteristics. Learning-to-rank algorithms are applied on a large set of features to develop several models for infographics retrieval. Evaluation of the models shows that features pertaining to the structure and the content of graphics should be taken into account when retrieving graphics and that doing so results in a model with better performance than a baseline model that relies on matching query words with words in the graphic.

the MIT Alewife project, launched in the spring of 1988, comprised a dynamic group of researchers who designed and implemented the Alewife multiprocessor [1]. One of the most important and unexpected outcomes of this project was the message-passing interface described in "Anatomy of a Message in the Alewife Multiprocessor," selected for this Retrospective. this interface was essential to the Alewife OS and runtime systems, was important for I/O, and enabled a new and innovative cache-coherence protocol, called Limit- LESS [3]. Natural illumination from the sun and sky plays a significant role in the appearance of outdoor scenes. We propose the use of sophisticated outdoor illumination models, developed in the computer graphics community, for estimating appearance and timestamps from a large set of uncalibrated images of an outdoor scene. We first present an analysis of the relationship between these illumination models and the geolocation, time, surface orientation, and local visibility at a scene point. We then use this relationship to devise a data-driven method for estimating per-point albedo and local visibility information from a set of Internet photos taken under varying, unknown illuminations. Our approach significantly extends prior work on appearance estimation to work with sun-sky models, and enables new applications, such as computing timestamps for individual photos using shading information. © 2014. the copyright of this document resides with its authors.

Structure-from-Motion (SfM) approaches, which are conventionally based on local interest point matches, tend to work well for richly textured indoor- and outdoor environments. However, in less textured scene areas the density of the resulting point cloud suffers from the lower number of matchable interest points. this significantly affects subsequent computer vision tasks like image based localization, surface extraction or visual navigation. In this paper, we propose a novel 3D reconstruction approach that increases the amount of 3D information in the reconstruction by exploiting line segments as complementary features. We introduce an efficient and effective semi-global approach, which takes into account local (per 2D line segment) as well as global (graph clustering) 3D line hypotheses constellations. Our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of accuracy, with comparable runtime. © 2014. the copyright of this document resides with its authors.

the last six years has seen Moore's Law continue to produce incredible gains in computational power. Indeed, the November, 2007 list of the top ten fastest supercomputers in the world contained no machines with acceleration of any kind. the same list six years later has four of the ten fastest supercomputers using accelerators, including the top two machines [3] . And the ten greenest supercomputers in November 2013 are using NVIDIA GPUs [1]. this heterogeneity of processing units is present from the top of the computational power spectrum down to the bottom, where GPU hardware coupled with novel CUDA and OpenCL programming paradigms have brought significant performance gains to consumer-grade applications. We present Hough Networks (HNs), a novel method that combines the idea of Hough Forests (HFs) [12] with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) [18]. Similar to HFs we perform a simultaneous classification and regression on densely extracted image patches. But instead of a Random Forest (RF) we utilize a CNN which is able to learn higherorder feature representations and does not rely on any handcrafted features. Applying a CNN on a patch level has the advantage of reasoning about more image details and additionally allows to segment the image into foreground and background. Furthermore, the structure of a CNN supports efficient inference of patches extracted from a regular grid. We evaluate HNs on two computer vision tasks: head pose estimation and facial feature localization. Our method achieves at least state-of-the-art performance without sacrificing versatility which allows extension to many other applications. © 2014. the copyright of this document resides with its authors.

Multi-view video acquisition is widely used for reconstruction and free-viewpoint rendering of dynamic scenes by directly resampling from the captured images. this paper addresses the problem of optimally resampling and representing multi-view video to obtain a compact representation without loss of the view-dependent dynamic surface appearance. Spatio-temporal optimisation of the multi-view resampling is introduced to extract a coherent multi-layer texture map video. this resampling is combined with a surface-based optical flow alignment between views to correct for errors in geometric reconstruction and camera calibration which result in blurring and ghosting artefacts. the multi-view alignment and optimised resampling results in a compact representation with minimal loss of information allowing high-quality free-viewpoint rendering. Evaluation is performed on multi-view datasets for dynamic sequences of cloth, faces and people. the representation achieves >90% compression without significant loss of visual quality. © 2014. the copyright of this document resides with its authors.

To increase robustness of depth-map-based multi-view stereo approaches, we combine several techniques: Depth estimates are propagated in parallel in the local neighborhood to efficiently spread reliable depth information into regions without prominent structures. A faster coarse-to-fine strategy fills in larger holes. Most importantly, a novel cross-view filtering stage based on free-space constraints and variance filtering, enforces consistency among the depth maps of different views. Our algorithm alternates between correlation and consistency optimization. this way, noisy patches and spikes are excluded so that the task for the subsequent depth map fusion algorithms becomes easier. Combining improved propagation, hierarchical estimation, and iterative multi-view consistency optimization, our method increases the estimation speed, generates dense depth maps with desirable global consistency, and yields convincing 3D reconstruction results. © 2014. the copyright of this document resides with its authors.

We present a novel method for dense variational scene flow estimation based a multi-scale Ternary Census Transform in combination with a patchwise Closest Points depth data term. On the one hand, the Ternary Census Transform in the intensity data term is capable of handling illumination changes, low texture and noise. On the other hand, the patchwise Closest Points search in the depth data term increases the robustness in low structured regions. Further, we utilize higher order regularization which is weighted and directed according to the input data by an anisotropic diffusion tensor. this allows to calculate a dense and accurate flow field which supports smooth as well as non-rigid movements while preserving flow boundaries. the numerical algorithm is solved based on a primal-dual formulation and is efficiently parallelized to run at high frame rates. In an extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluation we show that this novel method for scene flow calculation outperforms existing approaches. the method is applicable to any sensor delivering dense depth and intensity data such as Microsoft Kinect or Intel Gesture Camera. © 2014. the copyright of this document resides with its authors.
