Faculty are constantly being encouraged to utilize educational technology in engineering education. Research also indicates that learning is enhanced through sensory involvement, that is, the more senses that are involved, the greater the likelihood that learning will take place. We have the continued opportunity to involve the senses as we utilize the newer technologies of instruction such as computers, presentation software, and projection systems. In addition to it being a resource for faculty to use for presentations, the equipment can also be included in the instructional program, allowing students to be involved with the utilization of multimedia for enhanced learning, and even in the development of media-rich presentations.

Professor Cohen created the High School Institute over seven years ago with the goal of bringing students from outlying and mostly rural areas of Utah in contact with computer technologies integral to the future of design and manufacturing. 40-50 students a year spend five intensive weeks during the summer on campus at the University of Utah completing projects in computer aided design, artificial intelligence, and scientific visualization. the students also attend a special seminar on ethics and technology. Participants return throughout the year for additional activities, including a workshop on morphing. this paper discusses the cultural and logistical challenges of teaching high school students from many areas of the state of Utah, shows examples of student work, and outlines the process of refining the summer and year long lectures and activities.

the paper describes an integrated course sequence for freshman engineering students: Design, Technology and Communication I and II (DTeC). Design projects documented with log books and written reports, along with oral presentations serve as the integrating element in the sequence. In DTeC-I the students learn to use e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and solid modeling computer graphics application software as well as an introduction to FORTRAN programming. Design projects include a paper structure, digital logic, and aids for the handicapped in a local sheltered workshop. In DTeC-II, multimedia software and peripheral hardware (scanners, sound cards) are introduced and used in a multimedia design project: creation of interactive tutorial programs for 4th grade elementary school students, describing the operation of common technological devices. Development of DTeC-III, a mechatronics design lab in the sophomore year using "C" programming of a microcontroller, is presently in progress.

Instructors in the Colorado School of Mines' EPICS Program have had considerable practice over the past 15 years teaching engineering students to communicate effectively using the staff meeting format in authentic contexts. EPICS students have made approximately 12 oral presentations in a variety of contexts and to a variety of audiences by the end of their sophomore year. the paper explains the philosophy behind the CSM program and presents some of the logistical and pedagogical details as well as evaluation data.

van Dam began teaching computer graphics just as the field was beginning, in the early 1960s. His first class was not of graduate students or post-docs, but was a group of forward thinking high school teachers and their best students. It was this experience that inspired van Dam to pursue a career in academia. For the past 30 years he has taught at Brown University where he co-founded the department of computer science and for 10 years served as its first chairman. the past five years have seen exceptionally strong demand for integration of computers into K-12 curricula driven both by the media hype surrounding computer technology and networks and the increasing pressure on educational institutions to improve scope and quality of education in a publicly demonstrable fashion. these forces have combined to produce a time of great potential for education but also one of great danger. Educators and administrators must consider how can this technology be used to promote rigorous and useful learning rather merely adding glitz to traditional types of assignments. Educators and administrators must also be aware that although computers can bring education to a more diverse and expanding audience, the same technology can serve to divide societies into groups of haves and have nots. van Dam analyzes several means of approaching these and other issues, drawing on current research findings and using real life examples from his experience as a researcher educator, and Director of the graphics and Visualization Center.

this educational research endeavor describes the development of a MATLAB/Windows/C++ PC environment designed to teach fundamental concepts from classical systems and controls. Interactive computer-aided-lessons (ICALs) form the heart of the environment. Upon entering the environment, a master menu is provided from which the user can select a starting ICAL. the user is then led through a sequence of ICALs-each carefully designed to teach a specific concept. During each lesson, the screen is divided into three (3) child windows. the first window is called the Goal Window. the second window is called the Introduction, Question, Answer, Explanation Window. the third window is called the graphics Window. the ICAL environment has been designed such that old lessons may be easily modified and new lessons may be easily created and added to the environment. A sequence of ICAL screens have been provided to illustrate the utility of the environment as an educational tool.

this paper addresses the problem of inferring 3D human attention in RGB-D videos at scene scale. 3D human attention describes where a human is looking in 3D scenes. We propose a probabilistic method to jointly model attention, intentions, and their interactions. Latent intentions guide human attention which conversely reveals the intention features. this mutual interaction makes attention inference a joint optimization with latent intentions. An EM-based approach is adopted to learn the latent intentions and model parameters. Given an RGB-D video with 3D human skeletons, a joint-state dynamic programming algorithm is utilized to jointly infer the latent intentions, the 3D attention directions, and the attention voxels in scene point clouds. Experiments on a new 3D human attention dataset prove the strength of our method.

Four principles are presented for team teaching involving faculty from different departments and with different technical specialties. the emphasis of the paper is on the opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation where each professor provides a unique strength to the teaching team. Personal experiences are cited for the past academic year in team teaching a differential equations and linear algebra course both fall and spring semesters. Recommendations for improvements in this teaching model are suggested.

computer animation can serve as a powerful teaching tool. Too often, however, interactive computer animation degenerates into a video game, with students blithely entering data and enjoying "gee-whiz" graphics while managing to ignore completely the underlying physics and math-the understanding of which is the actual intent of the animation! Such unfocused trial-and-error engagement can be largely avoided if the animation is introduced as a tool rather than as a "black box." Spreadsheets lend themselves very well to this. One simple, easily-understood macro to "step" time is all that is required. Graphs based on formulas referencing this time immediately become animated if the student has entered and understood the spreadsheet formulas in the first place, the animation is a completely natural extension of a familiar tool. the visual impact is just as great as with more sophisticated animation but is a natural outgrowth of the underlying physics and math rather than being simply the output of a "black box".

Our interest, development and use of multimedia educational materials has proceeded mainly along two parallel paths. One path has emphasized computer-animated simulations, which are animations controlled by parameters set by the student. this approach enhances student learning by providing realistic visual feedback of qualitatively correct results. the second path emphasizes virtual instrumentation, which uses graphics and video-clip demonstrations via the Internet. this approach increases students' learning efficiency by providing them with simulated experiences with laboratory equipment and procedures before, during and after conventional laboratory activities. One major obstacle to any kind of materials development, especially multimedia development, is the issue of resources. To most effectively combine our existing materials, and to leverage limited resources, we have established a framework for a coalition of technology programs with similar goals and interests. A brief interest survey, sent to approximately 240 members of the Texas Junior College Teachers Association, shows that 30% of the respondents are already involved in multimedia development, 54% have Internet connectivity, and 77% are interested in participating in our collaborative efforts.
