computer animation can serve as a powerful teaching tool. Too often, however, interactive computer animation degenerates into a video game, with students blithely entering data and enjoying ''gee-whiz'' graphics while managing to ignore completely the underlying physics and math-the understanding of which is the actual intent of the animation! Such unfocused trial-and-error engagement can be largely avoided if the animation is introduced as a tool rather than as a ''black box.'' Spreadsheets lend themselves very well to this. One simple, easily-understood macro to ''step'' time is all that is required. Graphs based on formulas referencing this time immediately become animated. If the student has entered and understood the spreadsheet formulas in the first place, the animation is a completely natural extension of a familiar tool. the visual impact is just as great as with more sophisticated animation but is a natural outgrowth of the underlying physics and math rather than being simply the output of a ''black box.''

Automatic detection of dangerous situations in order to ensure the safety of residents is a new step in the development of video surveillance systems in cities. And dangerous situations are often caused by deviant behavior of people: robbery, brawl, vandalism and etc. But due to the strong variability of such scenes, their detection is a challenging problem, which still remains unresolved. the key to solving this problem is the recognition of fine-grained features and events of scenes and the application of knowledge management technologies. In this paper, three computer vision technologies for detecting people, tracking people and estimating three-dimensional human poses were integrated withthe aim of recognizing the actions and interactions of people in three-dimensional space. For all technologies an open source implementations were used that showed high results in popular computer vision challenges. A dataset was also created using computergraphics to test the developed system, containing scenes of the interaction of people in the city, shot under different point of views. this dataset showed that additional teaching of the human pose estimation component to handle challenging poses of people and camera viewpoints is required.

the objective of this paper was to explore the use of the World-Wide Web as an adjunct to normal traditional course delivery. the web site will involve laboratory safety and will impact students in chemistry, physics, biology, integrated circuit technology and, in general, any lab-based course. the web sires was developed through a team approach. the team employed two faculty members, one graduate student and one undergraduate student. the team also employ the most recently creation platform (COSMIC CREATE) technology developed by our partner in the project Silicon graphics Inc. During the test phase of the project the web site was used as an interanet site and involve only students at Howard. Once developed in its beta form, it will be available to the entire academic community sometime infall semster of 1996.

the electrochromic changes of the polyaniline (PANI) have been studied with vis-spectoscopy. the electropolymerisation of PANI was carried out in hydrochloridic acid (HCl) by cyclic voltammetry, and the deposited film was measured during protonation from the reduced and oxidated form switching between at different voltage and different switching speed It is shown, that the colour transmission changes depends from the switching speed, due to the ion movement to/from the film layer from/to the electrolyte solution, and acts as a possible limit of application. Colour transmission changing could be used in flat and flexible indicator devices in low power applications. It is shown, that due to the limits present in the system there are possible applications for such devices in display technology.
Withthree separate industries proceeding withtheir own agendas, the advent of digital video products and services could produce a new nightmare of multiple incompatible signal formats and connectivity requirements. ...

the motion of fluids has been a topic of study for hundreds of years. In its most general setting, fluid flow is governed by a system of non-linear partial differential equations known as the Navier-Stokes equations. However, in several important settings, these equations degenerate into simpler systems of linear partial differential equations. this paper will show that flows corresponding to these linear equations can be modeled using subdivision schemes for vector fields. Given an initial, coarse vector field, these schemes generate an increasingly dense sequence of vector fields. the limit of this sequence is a continuous vector field defining a flow that follows the initial vector field. the beauty of this approach is that realistic flows can now be modeled and manipulated in real time using their associated subdivision schemes. We present a new particle-based surface representation with which a user can interactively sculpt free-form surfaces. the particles maintain mesh connectivity and operate under rules that lead them to form triangulations with properties that make them suitable for use in subdivision. A user interactively guides the particles, which we call skin, to grow over a given collection of polyhedral elements (or skeletons), yielding a smooth surface (through subdivision) that approximates the underlying skeletal shapes. Skin resembles blobby modeling in the constructive approach to modeling it supports, but allows a richer vocabulary of skeleton shapes, supports sharp creases where desired, and provides a convenient mechanism for adding multiresolution surface detail.
