State-of-art graphics processing units (GPUs) employ the single-instruction multiple-data (SIMD) style execution to achieve both high computational throughput and energy efficiency. As previous works have shown, there exists significant computational redundancy in SIMD execution, where different execution lanes operate on the same operand values. Such value locality is referred to as uniform vectors. In this paper, we first show that besides redundancy within a uniform vector, different vectors can also have the identical values. then, we propose detailed architecture designs to exploit both types of redundancy. For redundancy within a uniform vector, we propose to either extend the vector register file with token bits or add a separate small scalar register file to eliminate redundant computations as well as redundant data storage. For redundancy across different uniform vectors, we adopt instruction reuse, proposed originally for CPU architectures, to detect and eliminate redundancy. the elimination of redundant computations and data storage leads to both significant energy savings and performance improvement. Furthermore, we propose to leverage such redundancy to protect arithmetic-logic units (ALUs) and register files against hardware errors. Our detailed evaluation shows that our proposed design has low hardware overhead and achieves performance gains, up to 23.9% and 12.0% on average, along with energy savings, up to 24.8% and 12.6% on average, as well as a 21.1% and 14.1% protection coverage for ALUs and register files, respectively. © 2013 ACM.

the Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) Program is a certification program available worldwide to Microsoft Office users. the program offers Proficient and Expert user certifications in Microsoft Office Applications. Candidates for the certification are required to take a hands-on exam at an Authorized Testing Center. In the spring of 1999, Bucknell University became an Authorized Testing Center. the MOUS program has become a part of Information Services and Resources (ISR) Technology Training Program. this paper will provide an overview of the MOUS program at Bucknell. Specific issues that will be addressed in this paper include: • What benefits did we hope would result from the program? What benefits have we seen? • How the Bucknell community reacted to the program. • What impact, if any has the program had on Training and Support services? the intended audience for this paper is Trainers, Managers, Analysts, Directors, and others interested in new initiatives in training and user services. © 1999 ACM.

Conventional approaches to engineering education require that fundamental principles be taught in the freshman year and high-tech applications presented in the junior/senior years. this paper proposes an alternate approach wherein freshman engineering students are exposed to high-tech applications, suitably modified and with minimal theory, based on "buzz-words" that are propagated in the media. the authors believe that this approach will enhance student motivation and improve retention. the paper describes two freshman engineering class projects that have been used for implementing this technique.

Multiprocessing modular exponentiation has a variety of uses, including cryptography, prime testing and computational number theory. It is also a very costly operation to compute. GPU parallelism can be used to accelerate these computations, but to use the GPU efficiently, a problem must involve a significant number of simultaneous exponentiation operations. Handling a large number of TLS/SSL encrypted sessions in a data center is a significant problem that fits this profile. We have developed a framework that enables generation of highly efficient NVIDIA PTX implementations of exponentiation operations for different GPU architectures and problem instances. One of the challenges in generating such code is that PTX is not a true assembly language, but is instead a virtual instruction set that is compiled and optimized in different ways for different generations of GPU hardware. thus, the same PTX code runs with different levels of efficiency on different machines. And as the precision of the exponentiation values changes, each architecture has its own break-even points where a different algorithm or parallelization strategy must be employed. To make the code efficient for a given problem instance and architecture thus requires searching a multidimensional space of algorithms and configurations, by generating thousands of lines of carefully constructed PTX code for each combination, executing it, validating the numerical result, and evaluating its actual performance. Our framework automates much of this process, and produces exponentiation code that is up to six times faster than the best known hand-coded implementations. More importantly, the framework enables users to relatively quickly find the best configuration for each new GPU architecture. Our framework is also the basis for the eventual creation of a multiprocessing matrix arithmetic package for GPU cluster systems that will be portable across multiple generations of GPU. © 2013 IEEE.

the Chemical Master Equation (CME) is a stochastic and discrete-state continuous-time model for macromolecular reaction networks inside the cell. Under this theoretical framework, the solution of a sparse linear system provides the steady-state probability landscape over the molecular microstates. the CME framework can in fact reveal important insights into basic principles on how biological networks function, having critical applications in stem cell study and cancer development. However, the exploratory nature of system biology research involves the solution of the same reaction network under different conditions. As a result, the application of the CME framework is feasible only if we are able to solve several large linear systems in a reasonable amount of time. In recent years, GPU has emerged as a cost-effective high performance architecture easily available to bioscientists around the world. In this paper, we propose an efficient GPUbased Jacobi iteration for steady-state probability calculation. We provide several optimization strategies based on the problem structure with the aim of outperforming the conventional multicore implementation while minimizing the GPU memory footprint. We combine an ELL+DIAG sparse matrix format with DFS ordering to leverage the diagonal density. Moreover, we devise an improved sliced ELL sparse matrix representation based on warp granularity and local rearrangement. Experimental results demonstrate an average doubleprecision performance of 14.212 GFLOPS in solving the CME (a speedup of 15.67x compared to the optimized Intel MKL library). Our implementation of the warp-grained sliced ELL format outperforms the state-of-the-Art in terms of SpMV performance (a speedup of 1.24x over clSpMV). Moreover, it shows consistent improvements for a wider set of application domains and a good memory footprint reduction. the results achieved in this work provide the foundation for applying the CME framework to realistic biochemical systems. Digital reliefs mimic the style of their real life counterparts, and hence offer an elegant depiction of a 3D shape. Despite an increasing amount of research on digital relief generation in computer graphics, little has been reported on the generation of abstract sculpture forms using pure engraved lines. In this paper, we present a method to create a relief-like sculpture using lines extracted from 3D Objects. Our relief generation process is different from other previous works: our method uses lines to present the geometric shape while others rely on the smooth surface to convey the shape information. Such a relief-like art piece can be easily machined since only the lines need to be carved.

Trends in user interface design have converged onto a set of popular paradigms and technologies. Within this setting there is much room for variation and individualism. the goal is generic interface methodologies that are user device and platform independent. In this paper a strategy is proposed where design decisions are made at run-time. Instead of developers making the decisions the user influences the "design" in a natural manner that does not require special technical insight or skill. A user interface requirements specification is passed from the application to a site-specific interface client responsible for designing, realising and presenting the interface to the user. Design decisions regarding layout, choice of components and paradigm is determined from a combination of explicit and implicit user influences combined by an evolutionary search strategy. User access patterns are monitored and used to evolve site-specific user interfaces. In addition, patterns evolved by different users on a network of computers are exchanged and exploited in the ongoing evolution.

Research on Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) has increasingly gained popularity in recent years due to the powerful representational capacity of graphs. A common assumption in traditional synchronous parallel training of GCNs using multiple GPUs is that load is perfectly balanced. However, this assumption may not hold in a real-world scenario where there can be imbalances in workloads among GPUs for various reasons. In a synchronous parallel implementation, a straggler in the system can limit the overall speed up of parallel training. To address these performance issues, this research investigates approaches for asynchronous decentralized parallel training of GCNs on a GPU cluster. the techniques investigated are based on graph clustering and the Gossip protocol. the research specifically adapts the approach of Cluster GCN, which uses graph partitioning for SGD based training, and combines with a gossip algorithm specifically designed for a GPU cluster to periodically exchange gradients among randomly chosen partners (GPUs). In addition, it incorporates a work pool mechanism for load balancing among GPUs. the gossip algorithm is proven to be deadlock free. the implementation is performed on a deep learning cluster with 8 Tesla V100 GPUs per compute node, and PyTorch and DGL as the software platforms. Experiments are conducted on different benchmark datasets. the results demonstrate superior performance with similar accuracy scores, as compared to traditional synchronous training which uses 'all reduce' to synchronously accumulate parallel training results. © 2021 IEEE.

In this work, we proposed a feature recognition method for initial pose estimation to enhance vision-based UAV relative navigation. Different from the traditional methods, which employ corner detection and tracking, the proposed method extract all vertices of the target as feature points and map them from the image plane to the world (target) plane by a series of graphics and geometric constraints. Moreover, a vision-based target relative navigation (TRN) system is designed to verify the method. Using the feature points obtained from the method, the system can not only initialize the UAV pose relative to the landing target but also track the pose reliably. the results of the field experiment indicated that the proposed method is very attractive for high-performance UAV pose estimation.
