this paper focuses on the freshman year of the Foundation Coalition program at Texas A&M University. the curriculum includes chemistry, English, engineering, math and physics taught in an integrated just in time fashion using technology and delivered in an active-collaborative environment to students working in teams of four. through our thrusts of integration, teaming, active learning and technology we hope to produce engineers who can solve increasingly complex problems more effectively. Graphical analysis, not generally taught or used by engineering students, has provided the best avenue for integration of graphics into the freshman Coalition environment. Graphical analysis techniques introduce CADD (computer Aided Design and Drafting) to the student in a manner that reaches graphical fundamentals and at the same time is relevant to topics addressed in other course work. Examples include: graphical solutions to vectors are used to introduce the concept of coordinate systems and scale; and traditional topics in descriptive geometry have been replaced with an introduction to 3D model development. Another area where graphics provides a valuable interface is in developing communication skills. Integrated technical reports, produced by student engineering design teams, include technical content (graded by science, mathematics, and engineering faculty) and are submitted to English.

Summary form only given. the emergence of the World Wide Web together with the high performance computing and communication systems provide opportunities to transform conventional classroom teaching into a more distributed learning environment. the technology most suitable for such an environment is multimedia/hypermedia. Interactive multimedia which combines the strengths of computer graphics, animation, hypertext, digital video and audio provides a superior self paced learning environment. An important requirement for on-line engineering education is the availability of continuous interactive dialog with students and the capability of interacting with on-line experiments that provide immediate feedback. Although such capabilities can be easily provided on the Internet for synchronous text discussions using Internet Relay Chat (IRC) or similar methods, synchronous sharing of nontext information such as video, audio and animated graphics may introduce unacceptable delays due to bandwidth limitations. In this project, we have developed a novel methodology for efficient real-time transmission of multimedia material through the Internet. the technique utilizes transmission of low bandwidth signals through the Internet for activation of programs at remote locations. the technique allows real time bi-directional communication involving video, audio and graphics. As a demonstration of this method, we have developed the interface software for efficient transmission of Authorware applications through the Internet. the technique as well as a demonstration of the working model are presented.

Courses covering the topics of low-level machine organisation and programming often prove to be a source of difficulty for students. To aid understanding, a number of researchers have turned to the use of graphical simulators and the like, but little has been done to assist with the programming task itself at this level. In addressing this, the authors have applied visual programming techniques to create a graphical environment for programming at the machine level. the visual images used have been designed to convey the meanings of operations succinctly and intuitively, the mechanisms for combining images to form more complex instructions are made visually explicit, and the system environment frees the student from which of the triviality of assembly language syntax. the aim is to obviate the need to digest and remember vast amounts of detail about a processor and its instruction set before programming can begin, thus enabling the student to concentrate on the function and effects of the low level operations themselves.

Beta-splines used in visualization techniques differ from b-splines in that they are constructed using geometric continuity constraints instead of parametric derivative constraints. they are piecewise polynomial interpolating functions. We show how to exactly compute the samples of these functions from a sparse set of points. this computation uses only summations, and no multiplications after initial setup, and the summations can be pipelined for hardware implementation. the few multiplications necessary in the setup may be computed much more slowly than the output samples. Next, we show how to adapt this result to interpolate and manipulate curves. this technique consists primarily of summations in pipelined hardware. this new exact discrete implementation is fast, simple, and modular.< >

this paper describes an initiative to develop, deliver and evaluate a control systems curriculum. the curriculum must serve candidates in both the engineering and engineering technology programs. this presents some unique challenges that must be addressed throughout the planning, development and delivery phases of the project. the study of control systems is usually quite challenging for engineering students, especially for nonelectrical engineering majors. computer-based instruction will make the concepts more interesting and easier to understand for the candidates for whom the curriculum is being developed. Authorware 3.0 is being used to develop this courseware. It is an object-oriented authoring tool that supports the integration of text, graphics, animation, audio and video. the Iconic/Flow Control paradigm on which it is based makes it a powerful platform for the rapid prototyping of courseware modules. the paper also addresses the philosophy and instructional objectives which will guide the curriculum development process. A sample module is described and a working courseware module will be demonstrated at the conference.

the effective use of GPUs for accelerating applications depends on a number of factors including effective asynchronous use of heterogeneous resources, reducing memory transfer between CPU and GPU, increasing occupancy of GPU kernels, overlapping data transfers with computations, reducing GPU idling and kernel optimizations. Overcoming these challenges require considerable effort on the part of the application developers and most optimization strategies are often proposed and tuned specifically for individual applications. In this paper, we present G-Charm, a generic framework with an adaptive runtime system for efficient execution of message-driven parallel applications on hybrid systems. the framework is based on Charm++, a message-driven programming environment and runtime for parallel applications. the techniques in our framework include dynamic scheduling of work on CPU and GPU cores, maximizing reuse of data present in GPU memory, data management in GPU memory, and combining multiple kernels. We have presented results using our framework on Tesla S1070 and Fermi C2070 systems using three classes of applications: a highly regular and parallel 2D Jacobi solver, a regular dense matrix Cholesky factorization representing linear algebra computations with dependencies among parallel computations and highly irregular molecular dynamics simulations. With our generic framework, we obtain 1.5 to 15 times improvement over previous GPU-based implementation of Charm++. We also obtain about 14\% improvement over an implementation of Cholesky factorization with a static work-distribution scheme. © 2013 ACM.

this research focuses on developing a system that can retrieve objects from a large image database by exploring the different types of image features. We propose a global representation of object based on the combination of multiple features. After that, we design a novel method for generic object detecting in still images with automatic feature selection. Our method is simple, computationally efficient the main advantage of this method is that it can automatically choose features which are the most suitale for detecting one type of object. We present experimental results for detecting many visual categories including side view car, front view car, bike, motorbike, train, aero plane, horse, sheep, flower and tower. Results clearly demonstrate that the proposed method is robust and produces good detection accuracy rate.

Differential geometry and topology are the areas of higher mathematics, which particularly require visual representation of studying objects for better understanding of the material. On the other hand, the complex structure of such objects makes their visualization a challenge for modern graphical systems. In this paper we describe some methods useful for adequate representation of topologically non-trivial objects in virtual environment systems, particularly the acceleration of standard mechanisms for rendering of transparent surfaces, applicable for complex cases of self-intersecting time-dependent surfaces, not necessarily admitting continuous fields of normal vectors. We also use a simple technique of image-based rendering, which places stereo-photographs of real environments as static background for 3D virtual scenes. the methods are implemented in educational application, which demonstrates the main properties of elementary topological objects (Moebius band, Klein bottle, projective plane etc.) and gives a possibility to explore interactively the complex constructions, arising in higher mathematics.

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, USA, is planning to offer a new first-year program for all entering students in the 1998-99 academic year. the new first-year program will build on seven years of experience with the Integrated, First-Year Curriculum in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (IFYCSEM). In IFYCSEM, faculty integrate topics in calculus, physics, chemistry, computer science, engineering design, engineering statics and engineering graphics into a year-long curriculum which emphasizes links among topics, problem solving and teams. these faculty have pioneered innovations in the areas of curriculum integration, technology-enabled education, cooperative learning and continuous improvement through assessment and evaluation. Rose-Hulman's experience has helped encourage other institutions to offer prototype first-year curricula modeled upon IFYCSEM. these institutions include Rose-Hulman's partners in the Foundation Coalition: Arizona State University, Maricopa Community College District, Texas A&M University, Texas A&M University at Kingsville, Texas Woman's University and the University of Alabama. the paper summarizes the goals of the curriculum, the structure of the curriculum, significant innovations, student perceptions of the curriculum, summative assessment data, evolution of the program through formative assessment and continuous improvement, impact of IFYCSEM beyond Rose-Hulman and the development of an Institute-wide first-year program.
