Polygon overlay is one of the complex operations in computational geometry. It is applied in many fields such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), computer graphics and VLSI CAD. Sequential algorithms for this problem are in abundance in literature but there is a lack of distributed algorithms especially for MapReduce platform. In GIS, spatial data files tend to be large in size (in GBs) and the underlying overlay computation is highly irregular and compute intensive. the MapReduce paradigm is now standard in industry and academia for processing large-scale data. Motivated by the MapReduce programming model, we revisit the distributed polygon overlay problem and its implementation on MapReduce platform. Our algorithms are geared towards maximizing local processing and minimizing the communication overhead inherent with shuffle and sort phases in MapReduce. We have experimented with two data sets and achieved up to 22x speedup with dataset 1 using 64 CPU cores. © 2013 IEEE.

Accelerators such as graphics processors (GPUs) have become increasingly popular for high performance scientific computing. Often, much effort is invested in creating and optimizing GPU code without any guaranteed performance benefit. To reduce this risk, performance models can be used to project a kernel's GPU performance potential before it is ported. However, raw GPU execution time is not the only consideration. the overhead of transferring data between the CPU and the GPU is also an important factor;for some applications, this overhead may even erase the performance benefits of GPU acceleration. To address this challenge, we propose a GPU performance modeling framework that predicts both kernel execution time and data transfer time. Our extensions to an existing GPU performance model include a data usage analyzer for a sequence of GPU kernels, to determine the amount of data that needs to be transferred, and a performance model of the PCIe bus, to determine how long the data transfer will take. We have tested our framework using a set of applications running on a production machine at Argonne National Laboratory. On average, our model predicts the data transfer overhead with an error of only 8%, and the inclusion of data transfer time reduces the error in the predicted GPU speedup from 255% to 9%. © 2013 IEEE.

Polygon overlay is one of the complex operations in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In GIS, a typical polygon tends to be large in size often consisting of thousands of vertices. Sequential algorithms for this problem are in abundance in literature and most of the parallel algorithms concentrate on parallelizing edge intersection phase only. Our research aims to develop parallel algorithms to find overlay for two input polygons which can be extended to handle multiple polygons and implement it on General Purpose graphics Processing Units (GPGPU) which offers massive parallelism at relatively low cost. Moreover, spatial data files tend to be large in size (in GBs) and the underlying overlay computation is highly irregular and compute intensive. MapReduce paradigm is now standard in industry and academia for processing large-scale data. Motivated by MapReduce programming model, we propose to develop and implement scalable distributed algorithms to solve large-scale overlay processing in this dissertation. © 2013 IEEE.

graphics processing units (GPUs) have become widely accepted as the computing platform of choice in many high performance computing domains. the availability of programming standards such as OpenCL are used to leverage the inherent parallelism offered by GPUs. Source code optimizations such as loop unrolling and tiling when targeted to heterogeneous applications have reported large gains in performance. However, given the power consumption of GPUs, platforms can exhaust their power budgets quickly. Better solutions are needed to effectively exploit the power-efficiency available on heterogeneous systems. In this work, we evaluate the power/performance efficiency of different optimizations used on heterogeneous applications. We analyze the power/performance trade-off by evaluating energy consumption of the optimizations. We compare the performance of different optimization techniques on 4 different Fast Fourier Transform implementations. Our study covers discrete GPUsand shared memory GPUs (APUs), and includes hardware from AMD (Llano APUs and the Southern Islands GPU), Nvidia (Kepler) and Intel (Ivy Bridge) as test platforms. the study identifies the architectural and algorithmic factors which can most impact power consumption. We explore arange of application optimizations which show an increase in power consumption by 27%, but result in more than a 1.8Xspeedup in performance. We observe a 11% variation in energy consumption among different optimizations. We highlight how different optimizations can improve the execution performance of a heterogeneous application, but also impact power efficiency of the application. © 2013 IEEE.

We propose a method for visualizing 3D ground reaction forces for sprint training. Currently, sprinters can check their 3D ground force data using a 2D graph representation. In order to check the relationship between 3D ground force and their sprint form, they must check the 2D graph and a training video repeatedly. To allow simultaneous observation of the 2D graph and the training video, we use a mixed reality technology to overlay 3D ground reaction force onto the training video. In this study, we focus on 2D-3D registration between the image sequence and 3D ground reaction data. We achieved 2D-3D registration by using a constrained bundle adjustment approach. In the experiment, we apply our method to the training videos. the results confirm that our method can correctly overly 3D ground reaction force onto the videos. © 2017 the Author(s) Eurographics proceedings © 2017 the Eurographics Association.

Social videogaming provides opportunities for individuals not only to engage directly in active gameplay but also to interact indirectly from the sidelines. We present a study of the differentiated nature of participation in gaming based on field observations of six families playing physical videogames in their homes. Building on existing theoretical frameworks, we distinguish three kinds of durable roles: players, audience members and bystanders. Going beyond this, we also identify a rich variety of spontaneous and ephemeral roles among the audience: spectators, orchestrators, managers, coaches, directors, puppeteers, commentators, hecklers, supporters, documenters, shadow players, and cheerleaders. We argue that through this richer understanding of the differentiated nature of participation in videogaming, designers might expand the reach of their games and respond to the potential for new experiences in the broad situation of domestic gaming. In this paper we present TEAPOT, a full system GPU simulator, whose goal is to allow the evaluation of the GPUs that reside in mobile phones and tablets. To this extent, it has a cycle accurate GPU model for evaluating performance, power models for the GPU, the memory subsystem and for OLED screens, and image quality metrics. Unlike prior GPU simulators, TEAPOT supports the OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0 API, so that it can simulate all commercial graphical applications available for Android systems. To illustrate potential uses of this simulating infrastructure, we perform two case studies. We first turn our attention to evaluating the impact of the OS when simulating graphical applications. We show that the overall GPU power/performance is greatly affected by common OS tasks, such as image composition, and argue that application level simulation is not sufficient to understand the overall GPU behavior. We then utilize the capabilities of TEAPOT to perform studies that trade image quality for energy. We demonstrate that by allowing for small distortions in the overall image quality, a significant amount of energy can be saved. © 2013 ACM.

Our problem is to accurately solve linear system son a general purpose graphics processing unit with double double and quad double arithmetic. the linear systems originate from the application of Newton's method on polynomial systems. Newton's method is applied as a corrector in a path tracking method, so the linear systems are solved in sequence and not simultaneously. One solution path may require the solution of thousands of linear systems. In previous work we reported good speedups with our implementation to evaluate and differentiate polynomial systems on the NVIDIA Tesla C2050. Although the cost of evaluation and differentiation often dominates the cost of linear system solving in Newton's method, because of the limited bandwidth of the communication between CPU and GPU, we cannot afford to send the linear system to the CPU for solving during path tracking. Because of large degrees, the Jacobian matrix may contain extreme values, requiring extended precision, leading to a significant overhead. this overhead of multiprecision arithmetic is our main motivation to develop a massively parallel algorithm. To allow over determined linear systems we solve linear systems in the least squares sense, computing the QR decomposition of the matrix by the modified Gram-Schmidt algorithm. We describe our implementation of the modified Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization method using double double and quad double arithmetic for GPUs. Our experimental results on the NVIDIA Tesla C2050 and K20Cshow that the achieved speedups are sufficiently high to compensate for the overhead of one extra level of precision. © 2013 IEEE.
