In this paper, we present pattern language as a tool for assisting employees in putting corporate values into practice, taking the pattern language for practicing Rakuten Group’s corporate values as an example. the aim of this research is to help employees to link daily practices to the values and to provide clues for embodying it by using pattern language. As the first example, we created a pattern language for practicing "Rakuten Shugi," the corporate values of Rakuten Group, Inc. Rakuten Shugi consists of 10 concepts, five of them are "Brand Concepts" and the others are "Five Principles for Success," and we created three patterns for each concept. this pattern language, named "Rakuten Shugi Practice patterns," was created from mining the experiences of 22 employees who embodied Rakuten Shugi and have achieved great results, as well as Masatada Kobayashi, one of the co-founders of Rakuten. In this paper, we introduce five patterns for practicing the Brand Concepts: Connecting to the Mission, Daily Behavior, Seeds of Opportunity, Breaking it Down, and How it All Began. the paper will conclude with comments from employees on this pattern language. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). In this paper, we introduce a method of pattern Language Remix to apply and support beyond social and cultural backgrounds. We present a case study wherein it has been used to support Filipino youth attending vocational training schools in the Philippines. pattern Language Remix is one approach that utilizes existing pattern language previously created and recombines it for a different objective. In this study, the pattern Language Remix was created mainly by the local teachers with the objective of helping Filipino youth facing a hard situation in their life, to identify and take action on their work and life goals. Using the remix, several workshops were held for students attending the vocational school in Mindanao to think about their own future and what kind of practices they should actually implement, despite their difficulties. the results from the workshop suggest that utilizing pattern language has potential as a support method to encourage Filipino youth to take action and motivate themselves toward their future goals and dreams. In addition, we demonstrated the importance of the process in which individuals select patterns that one considers important in their own situation, in relation to the "Capability Approach" advocated by Amartya Sen, a development economist and philosopher. It was suggested that the pattern Language Remix method used here could be applied not only in the Philippines but also in other contexts as an internal empowerment, incorporating the practitioners’ own perspectives. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Concurrent Kleene Algebra (CKA) is a mathematical formalism to study programs that exhibit concurrent behaviour. As with previous extensions of Kleene Algebra, characterizing the free model is crucial in order to develop the foundations of the theory and potential applications. For CKA, this has been an open question for a few years and this paper makes an important step towards an answer. We present a new automaton model and a Kleene-like theorem that relates a relaxed version of CKA to series-parallel pomset languages, which are a natural candidate for the free model. there are two substantial differences with previous work: from expressions to automata, we use Brzozowski derivatives, which enable a direct construction of the automaton;from automata to expressions, we provide a syntactic characterization of the automata that denote valid CKA behaviours. © Tobias Kappé, Paul Brunet, Bas Luttik, Alexandra Silva, and Fabio Zanasi.

In the realm of quantum computing, circuit description languages represent a valid alternative to traditional QRAM-style languages. they indeed allow for finer control over the output circuit, without sacrificing flexibility nor modularity. We introduce a generalization of the paradigmatic lambda-calculus Proto-Quipper-M, which models the core features of the quantum circuit description language Quipper. the extension, called Proto-Quipper-K, is meant to capture a very general form of dynamic lifting. this is made possible by the introduction of a rich type and effect system in which not only computations, but also the very types are effectful. the main results we give for the introduced language are the classic type soundness results, namely subject reduction and progress. © Andrea Colledan and Ugo Dal Lago.

In the current trend of software engineering, software systems are viewed as clusters of overlapping structures representing various concerns, covering heterogeneous artifacts like models, code, resource files etc. In those cases, adequate search mechanisms for software repositories should be based on such fragmented nature of software systems, allowing concern-oriented queries on the system data. For this purpose, we propose a conceptual framework for a concern-oriented query language for software repositories. A pattern-based implementation scheme is discussed, exploiting existing tools. the applicability of the approach is studied in the context of an industrial case study. Copyright 2006 ACM.

In this paper, we present 27 patterns from Academic Writing patterns, along with example applications within a community of student researchers and discuss its results. Academic Writing patterns is a pattern language for writing creative academic research papers. It was created based on three sources: past archived dialogue about writing research papers, mining dialogue with Takashi Iba who is a researcher and professor that has written and guided various research papers, as well as books on writing papers and logical writing. We determined and grasped the essence of important practices and how to practice them, compiled similar practices, and created 27 patterns. the patterns are divided into three categories: BUILDING A RESEARCH, SHAPING LOGICAL CONSTRUCTS, and CREATING EXPRESSIONS FOR OthERS. Each category is made up of three groups including: REINTERPRET thE RESEARCH, EXPLORE thE CORE OF thE RESEARCH RESULTS, OPEN UP AND CONNECT TO thE FUTURE, DEFINE thE WHOLE, DESIGN thE FLOW, BUILD thOROUGH PARAGRAPHS, DEVELOP CLEAR SENTENCES, BEAUTIFULLY ARRANGE FIGURES AND TABLES, and FINALIZATION AND COMPLETION. After the two workshops where the patterns were applied, the experience charts and survey responses give insight to the transformative impact of these patterns, facilitating enhanced comprehension and skills of composing creative academic papers among the students. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). this focus group report summarizes about the pattern Coin Trial that was carried out throughout the four days of the EuroPLoP conference with an involvement of all the members, for their conference experience to be fruitful and fulfilling. pattern Coins are small circular objects that were designed and created as an approach that boosts good practices within a community. Since members gifts pattern Coins as an encouragement to practice a pattern so that a member who received the pattern Coin could practice a pattern in their situation, they are a media of practice-gifting. the idea of practice-gifting was based on the theory the Gift by an anthropologist and sociologist, Marcel Mauss. the pattern Coin Trial was ongoing throughout the conference, and on the last day, a session was held, in which participants discussed about their pattern Coin experience. In this session, a survey was also taken, which suggested that pattern Coins were able to promote practice within the EuroPLoP community. In the beginning of this trial, all participants got a set of seven pattern Coins, and were suggested to carry around them every time during the conference until the last day. At the end of the trial, the participants discussed about the conference days with their pattern Coins, and a survey was taken, asking the participants what they felt about the pattern Coin when they used them. the use of pattern Coins in the community was once conducted in Iba Takashi Lab, which was also published as the EuroPLoP 2023 paper. this focus group, the pattern Coin Trial in EuroPLoP 2023 is a subsequent case study on the use of pattern Coins. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Manifold learning is a powerful tool for solving nonlinear dimension reduction problems. By assuming that the high-dimensional data usually lie on a low-dimensional manifold, many algorithms have been proposed. However, most algorithms simply adopt the traditional graph Laplacian to encode the data locality, so the discriminative ability is limited and the embedding results are not always suitable for the subsequent classification. Instead, this paper deploys the signed graph Laplacian and proposes Signed Laplacian Embedding (SLE) for supervised dimension reduction. By exploring the label information, SLE comprehensively transfers the discrimination carried by the original data to the embedded low-dimensional space. Without perturbing the discrimination structure, SLE also retains the locality. theoretically, we prove the immersion property by computing the rank of projection, and relate SLE to existing algorithms in the frame of patch alignment. thorough empirical studies on synthetic and real datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of SLE.

An Internet-of-things (IoT) system typically comprises many small computing elements (nodes) that are battery-powered and communicate over a wireless network. these elements monitor properties in the environment and send the data to client applications via gateways. the wireless networks used by the elements are subject to uncertainties that are difficult to predict upfront, such as dynamic objects (swaying trees, cars, …) and changing weather conditions that may deteriorate the transmissions. To ensure reliable communication over a wireless network of energy-constrained elements, recent research has proposed self-adaptive IoT systems. Such a self-adaptive system equips the network of elements – referred to as the managed system – with a feedback loop – the managing system. the managing system monitors the changing conditions and adapts the transmission settings of the IoT network to ensure the system’s quality goals. Leveraging and consolidating the existing knowledge in this area, we present a pattern that we coined Joint Learning that provides a solution to the decision-making problem of large, distributed self-adaptive IoT systems. With this pattern, elements use a joint learner to make adaptation decisions for individual elements while yielding reliable communication of the overall network. the pattern is applied to two cases to show that the solutions realize the system goals while operating under uncertainties. © 2023 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
