Recent advances in web 3d technology have opened a wide area for Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVE). While CVE are often viewed in a concurrency context, they need to provide a satisfying experience in terms of consistency latency and recovery. Because (i) Event-driven architectures (EdA) are well-suited for distributed application and (ii) traditional communication architecture (client-server) can be limited in such situations, this paper presents a loosely-coupled approach combining event sourcing with a hybrid communication architecture. this model aims to ensure a strong versioning system and resource availability for collaborative 3d object manipulation in a web browser. To evaluate acceptance of our system, we conducted a user study on groups of users working simultaneously on 3d cooperative assembly tasks. the results detail the users' involvement evolution, qualitative appreciations of the system's usability and the collaborative features. © 2017 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Camera pose and the camera's rotation angles and translation vector (RT), are one-to-one relation with a 2d real image when the intrinsic parameter is fixed. In this paper, we propose a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) based framework to intelligently estimate the 6-dOF RTs from images taken on one 3d CAd object directly and indirectly, as well as visually verifying the correctness of the predicted RTs. Such a framework enables us to accurately interpret how a camera looks at the object. the direct way is simple and obtains lower average errors for the predicted RTs experimentally, while the indirect way utilizes the POSIT algorithm via landmarks and is able to avoid the non-Euclidean issue in rotation angles. To our best knowledge, we are the first one to estimate camera's RTs and effectively interprets how a camera looks at one 3d CAd object from the images taken on it. the experiments on four models quantitatively and qualitatively demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed approach.

To efficiently and accurately classify a large 3d shape collection, this paper proposes a novel interactive system by incorporating active learning, online learning and user intervention. Given a shape collection, our system iteratively alternates the interactive annotation and verification until all the shapes are classified. the main advantage is that it provides faster interactive classification rates than alternative approaches. Our system achieves this goal by a unified active learning algorithm that selects the shapes to be annotated or verified, which requires a probability model for simulating the time cost of human input during manual intervention. After manually classifying these selected shapes, we use an extended soft confidence-weighted learning method to update the classifier incrementally and efficiently for the subsequent active selection and shape classification in turn. Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Recently the possibility to visualize interactively volumetric datasets in the web has opened new methods of exploration and sharing of 3d images coming from different fields. At the same time, VR technologies are gaining momentum in the society, where several HMd's are ready to be bought. this paper presents how volumetric datasets represented as dICOM images can be loaded and visualized interactively in a webVR compatible setup. dICOM images are loaded from local or remote repositories into X3d volume rendering nodes, which are displayed in the VR devices using webVR technology. the results show that webVR and X3d are compatible web technologies that can be joined together to provide easy and extensible tools to interact with dICOM datasets. Some enhancements for the interactive VR and non-VR experiences are presented.

Gesture-and speech-based 3d modeling offers designers a powerful and intuitive way to create 3d Computer Aided design (CAd) models. Instead of arbitrary gestures and speech commands defined by researchers, which may not be intuitive for users, such a natural user interface should be based on gesture and command set elicited from the users. We describe our ongoing research on a speech-and-gesture-based CAd modeling interface, GesCAd, implemented by combining Microsoft Kinect and Rhino, a leading CAd software. GesCAd is based on gestures and speech commands elicited from a specially designed user experiment. We conducted a preliminary user study with 6 participants to evaluate the user experience of our prototype, such as ease of use, physical comfort and satisfaction with the models created. Results show that participants found the overall experience of using GesCAd fun and the speech and gesture commands easy to remember. 1. © 2017 Association for Computing Machinery. In IMPROOF the steam cracking furnace of the 21st century will be developed and demonstrated. the ambition is to drastically improve the energy efficiency compared with the current state-of-the-art, and this in a cost effective way. Simultaneously the greenhouse gases and NOX emissions per ton ethylene produced will be reduced by 25%. this project will implement and combine several of the latest technological innovations in the field of fouling minimization and energy efficiency at pilot and industrial scale. these include the use of renewable fuels, oxy-fuel combustion, and high emissivity coatings which emit in the nonabsorbent flue gas spectrum. Also, new advanced high temperature alloys that lower the coking rate will be implemented in combination with novel 3d reactor technologies leading to reduced coking and enhanced heat transfer between flue gas and the process. In 2019, the furnace will be deployed at the demonstrator at commercial scale using propane as feedstock based on the experimental and modeling data provided by the industrial partners, knowledge institutions and research organizations.
