during the last few years photovoltaic (PV) panels are increasingly incorporated into the construction of buildings for generating electrical power (BIPV systems) or both electrical and thermal energy (BIPV/T systems). the integration creates heat in the gap between the PVs and the building’s skin, which if not removed to be used to cover part of the heating load of the building (winter) or to the atmosphere (summer), it decreases the efficiency of the PVs and increases the cooling loads of the buildings in summertime. this study aims to evaluate the thermal behaviour of a BIPV system in order to decide whether natural ventilation of the air behind the PV is adequate to cool it down and remove the excess heat. the examination of the effect of the air gap of a BIPV system as well as the slope of the system or the amount of solar radiation are very important parameters as they can lead to better understanding of the conditions that allow the higher efficiency of the PV panels and accordingly higher efficiency of the BIPV system. the investigation of the above parameters is done experimentally in a laboratory with a large scale solar simulator (SS) and a representative apparatus of a BIPV system, able to change the air gap of the duct and the slope in order to simulate roof or façade installation. the experimental results are compared with 3d modelling simulation results obtained using COMSOL Multiphysics software. © 2016 University of Ljubljana.

3d-stacked dRAM has the potential to provide high performance and large capacity memory for future high performance computing systems and datacenters, and the integration of a dedicated logic die opens up opportunities for architectural enhancements such as dRAM row-buffer caches. However, high performance and cost-effective row-buffer cache designs remain challenging for 3d memory systems. In this paper, we propose History-Assisted Adaptive-Granularity Cache (HAAG$) that employs an adaptive caching scheme to support full associativity at various granularities, and an intelligent history-assisted predictor to support a large number of banks in 3d memory systems. By increasing the row-buffer cache hit rate and avoiding unnecessary data caching, HAAG$ significantly reduces memory access latency and dynamic power. Our design works particularly well for manycore CPUs running (irregular) memory intensive applications where memory locality is hard to exploit. Evaluation results show that with memory-intensive CPU workloads, HAAG$ can outperform the state-of-the-art row buffer cache by 33.5%.

In this work we investigate an infrared structured light pro-totype which is intended for 3d reconstruction in resource-restricted mobile applications. We explore the constraints on working range and pattern resolution that are imposed by the low-light property of our single-shot set-up. While focusing on the most light-sensitive steps of the decoding workow, we suggest adaptations of image rectification and pattern generation and segmentation algorithms that are tailored to the specific spatial and radiometric requirements of our system. Silicon-photonic link technology promises to satisfy the growing need for high bandwidth, low-latency and energy-efficient network-on-chip (NoC) architectures. While silicon-photonic NoC designs have been extensively studied for future many-core systems, their use in massively-threaded GPUs has received little attention to date. In this paper, we first analyze an electrical NoC which connects different cache levels (L1 to L2) in a contemporary GPU memory hierarchy. Evaluating workloads from the AMd SdK run on the Multi2sim GPU simulator finds that, apart from limits in memory bandwidth, an electrical NoC can significantly hamper performance and impede scalability, especially as the number of compute units grows in future GPU systems. To address this issue, we advocate using silicon-photonic link technology for on-chip communication in GPUs, and we present the first GPU-specific analysis of a cost-effective hybrid photonic crossbar NoC. Our baseline is based on an AMd Southern Islands GPU with 32 compute units (CUs) and we compare this design to our proposed hybrid silicon-photonic NoC. Our proposed photonic hybrid NoC increases performance by up to 6x (2.7x on average) and reduces the energy-delay(2) product ((EdP)-P-2) by up to 99% (79% on average) as compared to conventional electrical crossbars. For future GPU systems, we study an electrical 2d-mesh topology since it scales better than an electrical crossbar. For a 128-CU GPU, the proposed hybrid silicon-photonic NoC can improve performance by up to 1.9x (43% on average) and achieve up to 62% reduction in (EdP)-P-2 (3% on average) in comparison to mesh design with best performance.

Using 3d building models is extremely helpful throughout the architecture engineering and construction (AEC) lifecycle. Such models coupled with virtual walk through can enable customers to decide and be satisfied with their dream building. Manually creating a polygonal 3d model of a set of floor plans is nontrivial and requires skill and time. this project introduces and reviews a mechanism for applying interior and exterior design constructs after the conversion of 2d drawings into 3d Building Information Model (BIM). this research demonstrates an automated 3d model reconstruction of real world object from an un-calibrated image sequence targeting the same scene, which can be used for interior and exterior design. there are many key techniques in 3d reconstruction from image sequences, including feature matching, fundamental matrix estimation, projective reconstruction, camera self-calibration, dense stereo matching and Euclidean reconstruction. the effectiveness of the algorithms was evaluated in the experiments with many real image sequences. © 2014 IEEE.

TCO (Transparent Conductive Oxides) layers often exhibit very rough surfaces and their optical properties, can not be described by one dimensional analytical models and numerical approaches must be adopted. However, computational time becomes, often, too large. In this paper we propose an automated procedure, based on the interaction between MATLAB and the Sentaurus TCAd environment which finds, in a generic rough surface, the smallest area characterized by the same statistical features of the whole surface so that full 3d analysis can be performed.

Numerical prediction of fiber orientation in injection-molded short-fiber/thermoplastic composite parts with experimental validation

Numerical prediction of the fiber orientation in the short-glass fiber (GF) reinforced polyamide 6 (PA6) composites with the fiber weight concentration of 30%, 50%, and 70% manufactured by the injection molding process is presented. And the fiber orientation was also directly observed and measured through X-ray computed tomography. during the injection molding process of the short-fiber/thermoplastic composite, the fiber orientation is produced by the flow states and the fiber-fiber interaction. Folgar and Tucker equation is the well known for modeling the fiber orientation in a concentrated suspension. they included into Jeffrey’s equation a diffusive type of term by introducing a phenomenological coefficient to account for the fiber-fiber interaction. Our developed model for the fiber-fiber interaction was proposed by modifying the rotary diffusion term of the Folgar-Tucker equation. this model was presented in a conference paper of the 29th international conference of the Polymer Processing Society published by AIP conference proceeding. For modeling fiber interaction, the fiber dynamic simulation was introduced in order to obtain a global fiber interaction coefficient, which is sum function of the fiber concentration, aspect ratio, and angular velocity. the fiber orientation is predicted by using the proposed fiber interaction model incorporated into a computer aided engineering simulation package C-Mold. An experimental program has been carried out in which the fiber orientation distribution has been measured in 100 x 100 x 2 mm injection-molded plate and 100 x 80 x 2 mm injection-molded weld by analyzed with a high resolution 3d X-ray computed tomography system XVA-160α, and calculated by X-ray computed tomography imaging. the numerical prediction shows a good agreement with experimental validation. And the complex fiber orientation in the injection-molded weld was investigated.

this paper summarizes the results of a teaching experience held at the Universita Ca' Foscari in Venice where 50 students of the Computer Science undergraduate degree program were involved in the design of complex web applications for improving the environmental awareness of teachers and students. the implementation of the web applications required to mix different technologies, including HTML5, CSS, Javascript and asynchronous communication with a back-end for retrieving dynamic data to display. the X3dOM framework was chosen for implementing the 3d component of the applications, because of its capability of integration with the other web technologies and of delivering 3d content on a web browser without requiring a dedicated plugin, maximizing the number of the potential users. the design and the implementation of the web applications were an interesting occasion for experimenting production workflows and for measuring the points of strengths and the drawbacks of the framework. After the conclusion of the project the groups of students filled in a questionnaire where they expressed their opinions, derived from the implementation experience. the results confirmed the usefulness of X3dOM but evidenced also a number of drawbacks that should be considered for the evolution of the framework and the related tools.
