In this paper we present a software architecture for the integration of a RESTful web service interface in OpenSG applications. the proposed architecture can be integrated into any OpenSG application with minimal changes to the sources. Extending a scene graph application with a web service interface offers many new possibilities. Without much effort it is possible to review and control the scene and its components using a web browser. New ways of (browser based) user interactions can be added on all kinds of web enabled devices. As an example we present the integration of "Sweethome3d" into an existing virtual reality setup. © 2010 acm.

In the paper, we present an application of web3d technologies, X3d with X3dOM and HTML5, to enhance our e-learning platform dIEL. dIEL exploits the social translucence concept in order to create a virtual and dynamic learning space where avatars of community members can interact while implementing any social constructivist learning paradigm. While supporting collaborative learning communities, the addition of high-performance 3d graphics into a dIEL web page, without requiring any plug-in at client side, allows a complete and meaningful interaction with the e-learning services, that benefits the users' experience in the exploitation of proximity relationships with respect to other users and resources. © 2010 acm.

the X3d standard is open, supported by an international consortium, mature and in constant development, but with a low adoption rate. In this work, X3d qualities and problems are discussed and correlated with other solutions. In this process it was detected some necessities in current applications and the complexity of X3d to deal with these issues. As an attempt to demonstrate that the complexity of X3d in some aspects may be reduced, the dweb3d toolkit was built. dweb3d is a toolkit to help the development of dynamic X3d applications, showing that it is possible to simplify the development process, possibly increasing the access to developers in this area. the toolkit provides tools to deal with publishing, synchronism, interactivity, multiple users management and disk persistence. © 2010 acm.

this work presents a technical solution for the creation of visualization schemes for biological data on the web platform. the proposed technology tries to overcome the standard approach of molecular/biochemical visualization tools, which generally provide a fixed set of visualization methods. this goal is reached by exploiting the capabilities of the webGL API and the high level objects of the SpiderGL library, these features will give the users the possibility to implement an arbitrary visualization scheme, while keeping simple the implementation process. To better explain the philosophy and capabilities of this technology, we will describe the implementation of the web version of a specific visualization method, demonstrating how it can deal with both the requirements of scientific rigor in manipulating the data and the necessity to produce flexible and appealing rendering styles. © 2010 acm.

Extensible 3d (X3d) modeling language is one of the leading web3d technologies. despite the rich functionality, the language does not currently provide tools for rapid development of conventional graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Every X3d author is responsible for building - from primitives - a purpose-specific set of required interface components, often for a single use. We address the challenge of creating consistent, efficient, interactive, and visually appealing GUIs by proposing the X3d User Interface (X3dUI) library. this library includes a wide range of cross-compatible X3d widgets, equipped with configurable appearance and behavior. With this library, we attempt to standardize the GUI construction across various X3d-driven projects, and improve the reusability, compatibility, adaptability, readability, and flexibility of many existing applications. © 2010 acm.

web technologies provide the basis to distribute digital information worldwide and in realtime but they have also established the web as a ubiquitous application platform. the web evolved from simple text data to include advanced layout, images, audio, and recently streaming video. Today, as our digital environment becomes increasingly three-dimensional (e.g. 3d cinema, 3d video, consumer 3d displays, and high-performance 3d processing even in mobile devices) it becomes obvious that we must extend the core web technologies to support interactive 3d content. Instead of adapting existing graphics technologies to the web, XML3d uses a more radical approach: We take today's web technology and try to find the minimum set of additions that fully support interactive 3d content as an integral part of mixed 2d/3d web documents. XML3d enables portable cross-platform authoring, distribution, and rendering of and interaction with 3d data. As a declarative approach XML3d fully leverages existing web technologies including HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), the document Object Model (dOM), and AJAX for dynamic content. All 3d content is exposed in the dOM, fully supporting dOM scripting and events, thus allowing web designers to easily apply their existing skills. the design of XML3d is based on modern programmable graphics hardware, e.g. supports efficient mapping to GPUs without maintaining copies. It also leverages a new approach to specify shaders independently of specific rendering techniques or graphics APIs. We demonstrated the feasibility of our approach by integrating XML3d support into two major open browser frameworks from Mozilla and webKit as well as providing a portable implementation based on JavaScript and webGL. © 2010 acm.

this paper presents methods based on the open standard X3d to rapidly describe life-like characters and other scene elements in the context of storyboarding and pre-visualization. Current frameworks that employ virtual agents often rely on non-standardized pipelines and lack functionality to describe lighting, camera staging or character behavior in a descriptive and simple manner. Even though demand for such a system is high, ranging from edutainment to pre-visualization in the movie industry, few such systems exist. thereto, we present the ANSWER framework, which provides a set of interconnected components that aid a film director in the process of film production from the planning stage to post-production. Rich and intuitive user interfaces are used for scene authoring and the underlying knowledge model is populated using semantic web technologies over which reasoning is applied. this transforms the user input into animated pre-visualizations that enable a director to experience and understand certain film making decisions before production begins. In this context we also propose some extensions to the current X3d standard for describing cinematic contents. © 2010 acm.

In this paper, we describe a case study in usability engineering for web3d learning systems and introduce a new step to the typical methods of the usability design. Pedagogical applications present a challenge to the usual usability engineering process in that the end-users of the system (students) cannot describe the requirements of the system. For this situation, we engage the latest evidence and principles of cognition to help map requirements to information design for an interactive learning system. Our system seeks to improve the structural understanding of architects and to teach relationships between form and structure in long-span systems. We provide both explanatory multimedia resources and interactive resources including a web-based modeling and simulation tool that aids architecture students with better understanding of the relationship between structure and form in design. We describe our design process and the system and examine the qualitative impact of the cognitive ergonomic process. this extra step in the usability design process of mapping expert knowledge to human perception and cognition can increase awareness of the requirements of a learning system and improve the effectiveness of the subsequent design. © 2010 acm.

this paper introduces a modern, declarative surface shader for the X3d standard that allows for a compact, expressive, and implementation-independent specification of surface appearance. X3d's Material node is portable, but its feature set has become inadequate over the last years. Explicit shader programs, on the other hand, offer the expressive power to specify advanced shading techniques, but are highly implementation-dependent. the motivation for our proposal is to bridge the gap between these two worlds - to provide X3d with renderer-independent support for modern materials and to increase interoperability with dCC tools. At the core of our proposal is the Common SurfaceShader node. this node provides no explicit shader code, only a slim declarative interface consisting of a set of parameters with clearly defined semantics. Implementation details are completely hidden and portability is maximized. It supports diffuse and glossy surface reflection, bump mapping, and perfect specular reflection and refraction. this feature set can capture the appearance of many common materials accurately and is easily mappable to the material descriptions of other software packages and file formats. To verify our claims, we have implemented and analyzed the proposed node in three different rendering pipelines: a renderer based on hardware-accelerated rasterization, an interactive ray tracer, and a path tracer. © 2010 acm.

3d is useful in many real-world applications beyond computer games. the efficiency of communication is greatly enhanced by combining interlinked verbal descriptions with 3d content. However, there is a wide gap between the great demand for 3d content and the inconvenience and cost of delivering it. We propose using PdF, which is extremely well supported by standard content production workflows. Producing PdF with embedded 3d is currently not an easy task. As a solution to the problem we offer a freely available tool that makes embedding 3d in PdF documents an easy to use technology. Our solution is very flexible, extensible, and can be easily integrated with existing document workflow technology. © 2010 acm.
