While recent work explored streaming volumetric content on-demand, there is little effort on live volumetric video streaming that bears the potential of bringing more exciting applications than its on-demand counterpart. To fill this critical gap, in this paper, we propose MetaStream, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the first practical live volumetric content capture, creation, delivery, and rendering system for immersive applications such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality. To address the key challenge of the stringent latency requirement for processing and streaming a huge amount of 3d data, MetaStream integrates several innovations into a holistic system, including dynamic camera calibration, edge-assisted object segmentation, cross-camera redundant point removal, and foveated volumetric content rendering. We implement a prototype of MetaStream using commodity devices and extensively evaluate its performance. Our results demonstrate that MetaStream achieves low-latency live volumetric video streaming at close to 30 frames per second on WiFi networks. Compared to state-of-the-art systems, MetaStream reduces end-to-end latency by up to 31.7% while improving visual quality by up to 12.5%. © 2023 acm.

With the rapid up-scaling of transformer-based large language models (LLM), training these models is becoming increasingly demanding on novel parallel training techniques. Tensor partitioning is an extensively researched parallel technique, encompassing data and model parallelism, and has a significant influence on LLM training performance. However, existing state-of-the-art parallel training systems are based on incomplete tensor partitioning space, where the distribution of partitioned sub-operators is limited to the spatial dimension. We discover that introducing the temporal dimension into tensor partitioning of LLM training instance provides extra opportunities to avoid collective communication across devices, saving memory space and also overlapping device-to-device communication with computation. In this paper, we propose a new tensor partition primitive that distributes sub-operators along both the spatial and temporal dimensions to further explore communication and memory overhead reduction over current solutions. this new primitive creates a broader parallelization space and leads to parallel solutions that achieve better training throughput with lower peak memory occupancy compared to state-of-the-art techniques. To efficiently deploy optimized parallel transformer model training to multiple devices, we further present an optimization algorithm that can find optimal parallel solutions from our spatial-temporal tensor partition space with acceptable search time. Our evaluation shows that our optimized tensor partitioning achieves up to 1.68 × training throughput with 69% peak memory occupancy compared to state-of-the-art distributed training systems when training LLMs. Upon scaling to 32 GPUs, the geo-mean speedup across benchmarks is 1.30 ×. When applied in 3d parallelism, up to 1.46 × training throughput can be achieved. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Waveguide-Integrated Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon detectors (WI-SNSPds) represent a transformative advancement in single-photon detection technology, combining the exceptional sensitivity of traditional SNSPds with the scalability and integration potential of photonic integrated circuits (PICs). this integration eliminates the need for optical cavities, significantly broadens spectral bandwidth, and reduces optical losses, enabling compact, high-throughput systems. SNSPds achieve peak system detection efficiencies exceeding 99%, timing jitter as low as 3 ps, and ultra-low dark count rates below 0.1 mHz. In combination with photonic integration these features make WI-SNSPds ideal for time-sensitive quantum applications such as quantum key distribution (QKd) and photonic quantum computing. Key challenge for a high system detection efficiency ( SdE) of WI-SNSPds is the coupling of light to the photonic circuit. Recent advancements in direct laser written (dLW) spot size converters show very high potential, achieving coupling efficiencies exceeding 83% (up to 95% in simulation) with exceptional reproducibility potentially enabling very high system detection efficiencies (SdE). WI-SNSPds also support transformative applications in imaging and microscopy, enabling high-resolution, non-invasive deep-tissue imaging with minimal optical noise due to their potential for multi-mode and extreme broadband sensitivity. Pixel Photonics' industrial roadmap focuses on the scalability of WI-SNSPds through wafer-scale production and seamless integration with PICs, supporting the development of co-integrated systems that combine detectors with photonic quantum processors. this integration eliminates fiber-chip links, paving the way for compact and scalable quantum computing architectures. Additionally, WI-SNSPds facilitate the creation of quantum links in large-scale quantum networks by enabling efficient photon entanglement distribution. these advancements position WI-SNSPds

To realize the effective application of interactive 3d technology in IETM, this paper proposes an interactive 3d method based on ***. Using ***, IETM can conveniently load and obtain the object information of the 3d model. According to the obtained information, IETM can further create and display the animations of the 3d model. Based on ***, IETM can also read the information stored in the data module to establish cross-references between 3d model objects and other elements in IETM. By controlling the web pages generated by IETM, users can control 3d model objects and achieve full interaction. In order to avoid operation conflicts, view, animation and manipulation modes are set in the proposed method to realize the full interaction between users and the 3d scene. © 2022 SPIE.

the widespread use of mobile devices propels the development of new-fashioned video applications like 3d (3-dimensional) stereo video and mobile cloud game via web or App, exerting more pressure on current mobile access network. To address this challenge, we adopt the crowdsourcing paradigm to offer some incentive for guiding the movement of recruited crowdsourcing users and facilitate the optimization of the movement control decision. In this paper, based on a practical 4G (4th-Generation) network throughput measurement study, we formulate the movement control decision as a cost-constrained user recruitment optimization problem. Considering the intractable complexity of this problem, we focus first on a single crowdsourcing user case and propose a pseudo-polynomial time complexity optimal solution. then, we apply this solution to solve the more general problem of multiple users and propose a graph-partition-based algorithm. Extensive experiments show that our solutions can improve the efficiency of real-time d2d communication for mobile videos.

While students with disabilities demonstrate high interest in STEM during the transition from high school to college, their representation in STEM decreases throughout postsecondary education and into the workforce [13]. Organic chemistry, in particular, is a uniquely useful case study for exploring technological accessibility in STEM education due to its heavy reliance on highly visual components such as two- and three-dimensional representations of molecular structures. In addition, many university STEM programs recognize organic chemistry's rigorous perception as a "weed-out" course [4]. After a thorough search, no organic chemistry educational website has addressed level AA accessibility, and therefore, none have met the web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0). In this study, we investigated student's preferences on accessibility features while learning organic chemistry. We then explored "webORA," a web-based application that allows the user to interact with a 3d molecular animation with subtitles that describe the reaction progression. We also evaluated the beta version of webORA by conducting user testing with users of multiple skill-levels. Lastly, we performed a manual accessibility audit of webORA.

the recent diffusion of new formats of archaeological publication systems results from ad hoc solutions conceived and realized for serving specific communication needs. these new formats are customized for facilitating the fruition of specific archaeological information and can be tailored and structured for hosting datasets and results. Unlike standard publications, they do not represent the final result of the investigation but rather a dynamic public space in which different interpretations can be revised and formulated. A review of the available online publication systems for Culture Heritage, with a focus on the publication systems the author worked with, can help define their potential advantages and flaws and steer the design and development of further advancements.

Selective openness is an R&d strategy in which firms allow portions of their technology to be accessed by other firms to attract adopters and supplier complements. While open-source software (OSS) has been widely embraced by software firms, it is unclear if open-source hardware (OSH) will be similarly embraced by technology-intensive manufacturing firms. this paper extends a competitive dynamics model to investigate tradeoffs associated with selective openness R&d strategies in the professional-grade additive manufacturing (AM) industry. We start by examining whether a competitive dynamics model supports selective openness strategies from a profit-maximization standpoint. We then evaluate the industry-level impacts of selective openness. While our results do not support the adoption of selective openness strategies from a strict profit-maximization standpoint, firms may pursue this strategy if they place value on advancing the overall product quality and accessibility in their industry. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
