Teaching curve and surface design in a computergraphics or a computer-aided design course is a challenge because of the very involved mathematics, the lack of easy-to-use tools, and the differing abilities of students to visualize three-dimensional objects. this paper presents the authors' work in teaching cross-sectional surface design using a pedagogical software tool DesignMentor. Withthis tool, students have hands-on practice and still learn surface design theory in an intuitive way. A summary of the authors' experiences and future directions is also included.

Engineering graphics has always been viewed as one of the cornerstones of an engineering education. It is important, indeed critical, to engineering since it is the basis for communicating all (engineered) designs. It is the language by which engineers communicate and think. there has been a revolution in engineering graphics. Gone is the T-square, the symbol for engineers everywhere, replaced first by AutoCAD and more recently by "three-dimensional parametric solid modelling" software. While this advanced computer software may be a better way to learn graphics, the same problem remains: how do we effectively teach this language of engineering to undergraduate students? Sketching is a useful tool in teaching engineering graphicstheory and standards to undergraduate students since it allows the student to concentrate on learning the material with less distraction. CAD is also extremely useful for teaching students about design, in particular how constraints are handled and ideas worked out. the question remains as to how to integrate these two tools into a useful whole? the author briefly discusses these two questions.

In this paper, we present a novel approach for real-time simulation of deformable soft tissue. When using Mass-spring or Finite Element Method to simulate the global deformation of soft tissue dynamically, we'll meet the difficulty that the size of the 3D problem (the number of elements in the Mass-spring or FEM mesh) is much larger than the 2D issue. So we put forward a hybrid model to solve the problems. this model consists of a deformable centerline and surface reconstruction mechanism based on simplified medial-representation algorithm and nonlinear mass-spring model, and we also proposed the local deformation method so that the accuracy is achieved and real-time requirement is also satisfied. We use a segmented left kidney and blood vessel as the examples in our case study.
