This paper proposes the use of a novel quantum calculus based least mean fourth (LMF)-based algorithm for single-stage three-phase grid-integrated solar photovoltaic (SPV) system. It consists of an SPV array, voltage source converter (VSC), three-phase grid, and various nonlinear loads. Different approaches have been evaluated by authors like combined Linear mean square LMF based algorithm, power normalized Kernel based LMF. In this manuscript we have used Jackson derivative based steepest descent gradient algorithm for quantum calculus based LMF. The detailed control techniques is tested along with nonlinear load condition, insolation increase during mean time. This system has an SPV array working under P&O MPPT techniques coupled with a VSC to provide three-phase active power and also acts as a static compensator for the reactive power compensation. It also conforms to an IEEE-519 standard on deviation of voltages and current harmonics by improving the quality of power in the three-phase distribution network. The proposed control methodology is simulated and tested using MATLAB/Simulink along with different load level, and with varying insolation level. © 2022 IEEE.

Energy-efficient thermal management of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and battery cooling systems is essential for an enhanced driving range of electric vehicles. With recent advances in vehicle connectivity technologies and vehicle computation units, a predictive model has been emphasized in control design. However, the system complexity due to refrigerant circuits and coupling with the battery cooling system makes it challenging to develop a computationally inexpensive model for potential model predictive control applications. This paper presents a novel control-oriented model to capture the behavior of a combined HVAC and battery cooling system for electric vehicles. To reduce the complexity due to the nonlinear two-phase flow heat transfer, the refrigerant circuit is modeled based on the assumption of a quasi-steady ideal vapor-compression cycle. The proposed model is calibrated with a three-step optimization process and then validated against a high-fidelity physics-based model with open-loop simulations. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed model with four states and five actuators: the root mean square errors (RMSE) of the battery temperature and the coolant temperature are 0.41 degrees C and 0.35 degrees C, respectively, and the normalized RMSEs of the heat transfer rate at the heat exchangers are within the range of 2.8% to 10.6%. At present, people attach great importance to information security issues, and the implementation of different security level protection systems continues to deepen. With the advent of rigorous membrane research and development in the middle of the 20th century, more wastewater plants started incorporating Membrane BioReactors (MBR) in their design. However, being a membrane system, the MBR is subject to fouling which may lead to maintenance and cleaning costs. In this paper, a fouling monitoring and prediction tool has been designed in MATLAB\Simulink. The model takes states related to membrane fouling, and calculates the membrane total resistance based on deterministic and stochastic models. The tool is capable of predicting future transmembrane pressure (TMP) cycles based on older TMP performance via an artificial neural network algorithm. TMP data have been synthetically generated from a validated mathematical model. Finally, an artificial neural network controller is implemented to control temperature and Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS) around their desired setpoints. The controller is able to minimize disturbances in both states in a narrow band around their desired setpoints.

The Underactuated systems are exemplified by the Two-Wheeled self-balancing Mobile Robot (TWMR). The system's strong nonlinearity and MIMO make control a fascinating topic. This paper investigates the balancing and tracking control of TWMR using strong integrated controller. The two independently motorized wheels in this mechatronic system track the target reference and investigate a balancing at the gravity center above axis of the wheels' rotation where model fluctuations and an external disruption are included in the consideration. In this work, the innovative controller is presented and tested as a coupling controller based on the aforementioned notions to satisfy considered design objectives. The proposed controller depends on linking several algorithms with each other, where the integrated controller design passes through three phases that are sequential and dependent on each other. In stage one LQR is designed with an IC-based reference control system (LQRIC Based MRCS). Stage two, a dual-loop parallel control of PID-based LQRIC (PCDL-PID) is designed, and in the final stage in this design, The sequential quadratic programming (SQP) is used to set parameters of the final designed control. Evaluation of navigation and balance abilities for TWMR are tested with different scenarios, the designed controller is investigated to observe the behavior of the robot in various targets and its effectiveness is validated. The most significant advantages of designed controllers are that it renders the control system insensitive to external disturbances and model uncertainty. © 2022 IEEE.

Flexible sensors with high sensitivity have shown great potentials in applications such as human motion detection and wearable electronic devices. In this paper, we propose a design of flexible piezoresistive sensors with hole structures that exhibit enhanced sensitivity. The hole structures re-arrange the strain distribution under tensile loadings, and the resulting non-uniform strain distribution amplifies the overall resistive response. The underlying mechanism of the enhanced sensitivity is based on the nonlinear piezoresistive behavior of conductive polymer composites under large strains. Simulation studies accounting for the nonlinear piezoresistivity are performed to investigate the influence of the aspect ratio of an elliptical hole structure on the sensor’s sensitivity. Results show that the design of hole structures increases the piezoresistive response, and a higher sensitivity can be achieved at a smaller aspect ratio. To experimentally validate the design, sensors that are made of exfoliated graphite polymer composites with an elliptical hole of different aspect ratios are prepared and characterized. Results show that the strain sensitivity reaches 7.65 when the aspect ratio decreases to 0.1, improved by two folds compared with the control sample. To demonstrate the performance in monitoring human motions, sensors with and without hole structures are attached on the finger and the wrist to detect the bending and relaxing motion, and enhanced sensitivity is also obtained from the structure with a low aspect ratio. This work provides an effective approach to improve the sensitivity of flexible sensors that are made of piezoresistive polymer composites. © 2023 SPIE.

Maintaining a constant DC voltage is essential for coordinating the control of these interconnected systems as fluctuations in the DC side can lead to nonlinear effects between the converter stations and instability in the power network. This study aims to overcome this challenge by proposing an system-level small signal modeling method based on harmonic linearization. This method allows for the analysis and effective handling of the time-varying, nonlinear, and multi-converter station coupling equations. By focusing on the dominant harmonics that affect the DC bus, this model simplifies the nonlinear harmonic coupling within and between converter stations. Additionally, a quantitative design method for the DC voltage controller parameters is proposed based on the integrated model. The design considers the mutual influence between stations, allowing the controller to extend its reach from single converter control to the entire multi-terminal system. Finally, a simulation model is developed in PLECS software to demonstrate that the controller can quickly restore the system's dynamic balance.

The spreading of Industry 4.0 technologies in the manufacturing industry has led to an unprecedent availability of data. Companies are exploiting these data for monitoring and improving their operations and supply chain management processes;however, managers and practitioners are increasingly requiring advanced solutions to better capture value from them. In this study, we collaborated with a manufacturing company to design and develop an Artificial Intelligence system for automated quality control which is powered by data generated during the assembly process of mechatronic components in a semi-automated assembly line. Based on the data collected through sensors placed on press machines, the designed expert system is able to compare each new assembly’s curve with the learned ideal curve for its reference configuration, in order to detect deviations eventually leading to faulty items. The model has been tested on a dataset of historical data, related to about 175.000 joining operations carried out in two years of production. As a result of using our solution, the frequency of identification of failure is increased by 10%, improving in turn the efficiency of the quality check and the identification of non-critical errors. The developed system is easily adaptable to a huge variety of processes which involve correlated physical measures, thus being suitable also for companies lacking sophisticated quality control procedures.
