In this paper we describe how java can be used to build an object-oriented dialogue manager for spoken language interactions between a user and an automated system. The approach is based on the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Communicator architecture. By creating object-based dialogue management components in java we separate generic from domain-specific dialogue behaviour in the interests of maintainability and extensibility.

The goal of this paper is twofold. First, we introduce a class of local search procedures for solving optimization and constraint problems. These procedures are based on various heuristics for choosing variables and values in order to examine a general neighborhood. Second, four combinations of heuristics are empirically evaluated by using the graph-coloring problem and a real world application-the frequency assignment problem. The results are also compared with those obtained with other approaches including simulated annealing, Tabu search, constraint programming and heuristic graph coloring algorithms. Empirical evidence shows the benefits of this class of local search procedures for solving large and hard instances. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

This paper investigates logical characterizations of some aspects of concurrent constraint (cc) computations. It contains both negative and positive results. We show that intuitionistic logic enables to observe the so-called stores of a concurrent constraint agent, but neither its successes nor its suspensions, even in the monotonic and deterministic case. On the other hand, IMALL (intuitionistic multiplicative and additive linear logic) does enable the observation of successes (but not that of suspensions): we consider a non-monotonic and non-deterministic version of cc, lcc, and we show that the successes of an lcc computation can be characterized logically;this holds also for cc, since cc can be faithfully translated into lcc. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

This paper examines the capability, performance, and relevance of a signal processing toolkit in java, a programming language for Web-based applications. Due to the simplicity, ease and application use of the toolkit and with the advanced Internet technologies such as Remote Method Invocation (RMI), a spectral estimation applet has been created in the java environment. This toolkit also provides an interactive and visual approach in understanding the various theoretical concepts of spectral estimation and shows the need to create more application applets to better understand the various concepts of signal and image processing.

We survey three of Paris Kanellakis's contributions to the complexity-theoretic analysis of constructs in the design of programming languages. These are (1) his result that first-order unification is complete for polynomial time;(2) his contributions to the complexity analysis of type inference for polymorphicallyty pedfunctional programming languages, which was proven to be complete for exponential time;and (3) his work on expressibility of simply typed lambda calculus when used as a functional database programming language. These research investigations are interrelated, emphasizing common themes and difficulties in the design of programming languages, with concrete implications that can be appreciated by language designers. First-order unification is a ubiquitous building block in implementations of sophisticated programming languages. It is, for example, the workhorse of logic programming engines, and the essential component of compile-time type analysis. The research on unification provided a secure foundation for understanding the complexity of automatic polymorphic type inference in functional languages such as ML and Haskell. Modern functional languages are based on the typed lambda calculus, so it is then natural to consider its computational expressiveness. We describe how the degree of higherorder functionality in simply typed terms can be related directly to well known complexity classes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

A fundamental area of software engineering that remains a challenge is the delivery of software with the minimum of remaining defects. The principal technique currently used in the software industry for the verification and validation of software is dynamic software testing where the software under consideration is actually executed using test data. The actual generation of test data for the purpose of automated software testing is still however mainly a manual task. This problem is further compounded for java programmers because testing criteria can be imposed at the java Bytecode level rather than at the source level. To alleviate these difficulties an Interactive Bytecode Inspection System (IBIS) has been developed that allows examination of the java Bytecode and the automatic generation and execution of test data.

Building distributed systems is an inherently difficult and complex task. Modern middleware architectures assist developers by providing abstractions that hide transport layer functionality. This paper argues that the development of such systems can be aided by the availability of appropriate, integrated tools. We discuss ways in which the building of such systems can be supported by development tools, focusing particularly on interactive testing and debugging mechanisms.A prototype system based on the BlueJ programming environment has been developed to support the development of java RMI applications as a basis for further investigation. The tools developed as part of this prototype are presented and discussed.

The search for techniques to process growing mountains of data efficiently continues apace, nowhere more so than in the field of bioinformatics. Distributed processing represents a practical solution to the search for more powerful architectures that can harness the power of multiple machines to solve a given *** this approach brings with it associated problems - selecting the most appropriate language to use in developing the software, development platform and system *** paper addresses some of these issues and also details observations gathered during the design and construction of one such distributed system [1] built using java to solve a well-known bioinformatics problem [2] in a parallel processing environment using artificial neural networks. This paper does not provide a detailed discussion of the problem itself or results obtained, however the inquisitive reader will find further details in [1].

We propose in this paper a novel way of looking at local search algorithms for combinatorial optimization problems which better suits constraint programming by performing branch-and-bound search at their core. We concentrate on neighborhood exploration and show how the framework described yields a more efficient local search and opens the door to more elaborate neighborhoods. Numerical results are given in the context of the traveling salesman problem with time windows. This work on neighborhood exploration is part of ongoing research to develop constraint programming tabu search algorithms applied to routing problems. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

Choosing an appropriate language to introduce students to computer programming has been a matter of debate for many years. The choice is arguably more critical in the case of one-year graduate courses, than for students from a non-computing background. Students on these courses are strongly focused towards employment, but the intensive format gives limited time to equip them with the necessary core computing skills. This paper explores an OO-light teaching approach to java as a first language. This approach has sustained progression rates in large cohorts, and the knowledge of java accumulated, facilitates progress to useful project work, in the current Web and networks dominated computing climate.
