Peer-to-peer emerges as a better way for building applications on the Internet that require high scalability and availability. Peer-to-peer systems are usually organized into structured overlay networks, which provide key-based routing capabilities to eliminate flooding in unstructured ones. Many overlay network protocols have been proposed to organize peers into various topologies with emphasis on different networking properties. However, applications are often stuck to a specific peer-to-peer overlay network implementation, because different overlay implementations usually provide very different interfaces and messaging mechanisms. In this paper, we present a framework for constructing peer-to-peer overlay networks in java. First, networking is abstracted by the interfaces that use URIs to uniformly address peers on different underlying or overlay networks. Then, asynchronous and synchronous messaging support is built upon these interfaces. Finally, overlay networking interfaces are sketched to handle specific issues in overlay networks. We have constructed several overlay networks in this framework, and built peer-to-peer applications which are independent of overlay implementations. Copyright 2009 ACM.

Cojava: A unified language for simulation and optimization

We have proposed and implemented the language Cojava, which offers both the advantages of simulation-like process modeling in java, and the capabilities of true decision optimization. We will demonstrate the modeling methodology and implementation techniques, following an optimization application example. By design, the syntax of Cojava is identical to the programming language java, extended with special constructs to (1) make a non-deterministic choice of a numeric value, (2) assert a constraint, and (3) designate a program variable as the objective to be optimized. A Cojava program thus defines a set of nondeterministic execution paths, each being a program run with specific selection of values in the choice statements. The semantics of Cojava interprets a program as an optimal nondeterministic execution path, namely, a path that (1) satisfies the range conditions in the choice statements, (2) satisfies the assert-constraint statements, and (3) produces the optimal value in a designated program variable, among all execution paths that satisfy (1) and (2). Thus, to run a Cojava program amounts to first finding an optimal execution path, and then procedurally executing it. To optimize a process, each real-world device or facility is modeled, tested and debugged in pure java as a class of objects with private state and public methods which change the state. A process is described as a method of a separate class, which invokes methods of the model objects passing non-deterministic choices for arguments, and which designates an optimization objective. For model developers, it appears as if the program has simply followed a single execution path which coincidentally produces the optimal objective value. Thus the learning curve for software developers is minimal. To find an optimal non-deterministic execution path, we have developed a reduction to a standard constraint optimization formulation. Two main demands on instruction set simulation are portability and high simulation performance. For the testing and benchmarking of ISA prototypes such as in an ASIP design process, simulators are additionally required to offer retargetability for the rapid modeling and revisal of their simulation targets. In this paper, we present the techniques applied in a full-system instruction set simulation framework that combines these three conflicting demands. Our framework is retargetable, portable and provides high simulation performance. It is entirely implemented in java and features a two-stage dynamic binary translation (DBT) targeting java Bytecode in the first stage and employing the java Virtual Machine as an external code generation back end in the second *** the use of state-of-the-art techniques such as DBT generates high simulation performance, the framework is also platform independent and can run on any J2SE-compliant java Runtime Environment. In spite of this platform independence, the native code generated in the second stage will even profit from the platform-specific optimizations performed by modern JVM implementations. Our second contribution is HPADL, the instruction set description language that provides the retargetability of our framework. HPADL is tailored for the specific needs of dynamically compiling full-system IS simulation. Due to its clean separation of concerns between the instruction decoding and instruction execution, it easily enables DBT. Also, it is not restricted to a specific range of target architectures such as RISC. In this paper, we will compare the modeling effort in HPADL to that of QEMU. For our experiments and in order to show the practicability and flexibility of our approach, we implemented HPADL models of the DLX, 8086, ARMv4 and PowerPC / PowerPC VLE ISA as well as some IO devicemodels in java. A comparison with the simulation performance of QEMU by reference of the EEMBC AutoBench 1.1 shows that we achieve 78% o

Timing side channels arise in software when a program's execution time can be correlated with security-sensitive program input. Recent results on software side-channel detection focus on analysis of program's source code. However, runtime behavior, in particular optimizations introduced during just-in-time (JIT) compilation, can impact or even introduce timing side channels in programs. In this paper, we present a technique for automatically detecting such JIT-induced timing side channels in java programs. We first introduce patterns to detect partitions of secret input potentially separable by side channels. Then we present an automated approach for exploring behaviors of the java Virtual Machine (JVM) to identify states where timing channels separating these partitions arise. We evaluate our technique on three datasets used in recent work on side-channel detection. We find that many code variants labeled "safe" with respect to side-channel vulnerabilities are in fact vulnerable to JIT-induced timing side channels. Our results directly contradict the conclusions of four separate state-of-the-art program analysis tools for side-channel detection and demonstrate that JIT-induced side channels are prevalent and can be detected automatically.

A mixin is a set of functionalities that can be added to many different classes. Typically, there are two common situations where mixins are used: (1) if a feature should be added to a large number of different classes;(2) if a class should have many optional features. In recent years mixins gained a lot of popularity, particularly in dynamically typed scripting languages such as Ruby or javaScript. The topic of our research is the integration of dynamic mixins into java using the Dynamic Code Evolution Virtual Machine (DCE VM) [1]. We aim for a stable, easy to use API and hope for a performance gain in comparison to other approaches.

A high degree of abstraction and capacity for reuse can be obtained in software design through the use of generic programming(GP). For this to be possible, the programming must be implemented in a language that is able to adapt and correctly transmit this capacity. In this study we show that java is feasible for generic software design and that it is predisposed to making this software reusable. To this end, we consider the design of a library of generic components based on the GP and we implement it with java.

java deserialization vulnerability has become a server security problem at present. An attacker can execute arbitrary commands by submitting a malicious object for deserialization. However, existing methods for detecting java deserialization vulnerability only find program paths to deserialize input data, it doesn't consider whether the program itself can build malicious deserialization objects, which may bring false positives. In order to solve this problem, people need to discover gadget chains in the program manually, however, it takes a lot of time. In this paper, we present a method for discovering gadget chains automatically and build a tool named Hawk Gadget in practice. The method is based on static analysis that analyzes every method in the program with control flow graph. We also Compare the Hawk Gadget with Gadget Inspector that is a tool to find gadget chains, the result shows that Hawk Gadget can find more gadget chains and has a lower false-positive rate. In addition, we use gadget chains found by Hawk Gadget in Apache-commons-collections-3 to generate malicious objects for CVE-2016-4437, and verify the effectiveness of gadget chains. © 2022 ACM.
