The increase in customer demands caused issues within a filter production company due to its processes which could not ultimately satisfy new requests. The main hardships faced by the company were: meeting delivery deadlines, manufacturing the increased quantities and lastly, a reasonable final price of the product. This paper demonstrates the utilization of modern Lean methods and quality management tools in a filter production company, as a way to problem solve the demands of customer requests. Lean management was used to optimize and increase production, to minimize or completely eliminate waste in the identified problems of the production area and logistic activities within the company. Lean enabled development of diverse solutions which, when implemented, resulted in material and immaterial savings. With Lean implementation, the company was able to improve on organizational operations such as ergonomics, transportation routes and production flows. © 2020 Danube Adria Association for Automation and Manufacturing, DAAAM. In the Representational state Transfer (REst) paradigm, which is commonly adopted in the IoT field, all the operations are performed on resources addressed by a URI. In order to simplify the deployment of REst-ful architectures, the Actinium runtime container, which allows remote clients to load, unload and run REst-ful applications written in Javascript (JS), was recently proposed. However, Actinium is based on the Constrained application Protocol (CoAP) over the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and inherits the limitations of both of them. For example, on hybrid networks made up of multiple subnets based on different transport protocols, CoAP requires proprietary solutions, such as httpto-coap gateways or border-routers to deliver packets across the different subnetworks. Moreover, CoAP lacks of support for secure group communications. This paper proposes Jx-Actinium, a novel implementation of CoAP devised to work over the JXTA P2P protocol proposed by Sun Microsystem. JxActinium not only supports hybrid networks, but also allows to create nested networks in which some JS services are reserved only to the peers belonging to a given secure peergroup. © 2016 ACM.

Most scripting languages provide a C API that enables them to cooperate with programs written in C. The scripting language Lua is designed to be embedded in other host languages. However, when embedding Lua interpreters in a C program, the programmer must use complicated C API functions to write glue code between C and Lua. Obeying the protocols of Lua's C API not only increases the development cost but also makes the program error prone. We propose LuCa, a domain specific language for developing integrated applications of Lua and C, with C as the host language. LuCa enables the programmer to write glue code in a combination of Lua and C with some syntactic extensions. By using LuCa, the programmer need not use C API functions;the programmer can directly write Lua-like code, which is much clearer than C code that uses many API calls. We have implemented a LuCa processor as a translator from LuCa code into C code that calls appropriate C API functions. The translated code can be compiled by a standard C compiler and executed by linking a standard Lua interpreter. © 2016 ACM.

Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) is a software engineering paradigm that uses models as main assets in all development phases. While many languages for model manipulation exist (e.g., for model transformation or code generation), there is a lack of frameworks to define and apply model mutations. A model mutant is a variation of an original model, created by specific model mutation operations. Model mutation has many applications, for instance, in the areas of model transformation testing, model-based testing or education. In this paper, we present a domain-specific language, called Wodel, for the specification and generation of model mutants. Wodel is domain-independent, as it can be used to generate mutants of models conforming to arbitrary metamodels. Its development environment is extensible, permitting the incorporation of post-processors for different applications. As an example, we show an application consisting on the automated generation of exercises for particular domains (automata, class diagrams, electronic circuits, etc.). © 2016 ACM.

The development of a real-time web application often starts with a feature-driven approach allowing to quickly react to users feedbacks. However, this approach poorly scales in performance. Yet, the user-base can increase by an order of magnitude in a matter of hours. This first approach is unable to deal with the highest connections spikes. It leads the development team to shift to a scalable approach often linked to new development paradigm such as dataow programming. This shift of technology is disruptive and continuity-threatening. To avoid it, we propose to abstract the feature-driven development into a more scalable highlevel language. Indeed, reasoning on this high-level language allows to dynamically cope with user-base size evolutions. We propose a compilation approach that transforms a Javascript, single-threaded real-time web application into a network of small independent parts communicating by message streams. We named these parts uxions, by contraction between a ow1 and a function. The independence of these parts allows their execution to be parallel, and to organize an application on several processors to cope with its load, in a similar way network routers do with IP traffic. We test this approach by applying the compiler to a real web application. We transform this application to parallelize the execution of an independent part and present the result.

Online tracking has garnered significant attention due to the privacy risk it poses to users. Among the various approaches, techniques that identify which extensions are installed in a browser can be used for fingerprinting browsers and tracking users, but also for inferring personal and sensitive user data. While preventing certain fingerprinting techniques is relatively simple, mitigating behavior-based extension-fingerprinting poses a significant challenge as it relies on hiding actions that stem from an extension's functionality. To that end, we introduce the concept of DOM Reality Shifting, whereby we split the reality users experience while browsing from the reality that webpages can observe. To demonstrate our approach we develop Simulacrum, a prototype extension that implements our defense through a targeted instrumentation of core Web API interfaces. Despite being conceptually straightforward, our implementation highlights the technical challenges posed by the complex and often idiosyncratic nature and behavior of web applications, modern browsers, and the JavaScript language. We experimentally evaluate our system against a state-of-the-art DOM-based extension fingerprinting system and find that Simulacrum readily protects 95.37% of susceptible extensions. We then identify trivial modifications to extensions that enable our defense for the majority of the remaining extensions. To facilitate additional research and protect users from privacy-invasive behaviors we will open-source our system.

Performance efficiency focuses on how an application’s performance scales relative to its theoretical peak on a hardware. The work examines porting two image processing algorithms, Gaussian Filter and Connected Components Labeling, across NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs using native kernels. We introduce a performance model to evaluate efficiency, noting that simply using peak throughput and memory bandwidth metrics is insufficient due to varying compute and memory demands across applications. We see that the CUDA implementation on an NVIDIA A10 GPU aligns more closely with the performance model than the hip implementation on AMD Mi210 or the DPC++ implementation on Intel Flex 170. This is attributed to the strong hardware-software co-design in CUDA. Additionally, non-CUDA implementations on NVIDIA GPUs underperform compared to CUDA, reiterating the need for GPU-native kernels and further research into optimizing generic software platforms for performance efficiency. © 2024 IEEE

Web vulnerabilities, especially injection-related ones, are popular among web application frameworks (such as Word-Press and Piwigo), which can lead to severe consequences like user information leak and server-side maiware execution. One major practice of fixing web vulnerabilities on real-world websites is to apply security patches from the official developers of web frameworks. However, such a practice is challenging because security patches are developed for the latest version of a web framework, but real-world websites often run an old version due to legacy reasons. A direct application of security patches on the old version often fails because web frameworks, especially the code around the vulnerable location, may change between versions. In this paper, we design a security patch backporting framework and implement a prototype on injection vulnerability patches, called SKYPORT. SKYPORT first identifies safely-backportable patches of injection vulnerabilities and web framework versions in theory and then backports patches to corresponding old versions. In the evaluation, SKYPORT identifies 98 out of 155 security patches targeting legacy injection vulnerabilities, which can be backported to 750 old versions of web application frameworks. Then, SKYPORT successfully backported all of the aforementioned backportable patches to corresponding old versions to correctly fix vulnerabilities. We believe that this is a first-step towards this important research problem and hope our research can draw further attention from the research community in backporting security patches to fix unpatched vulnerabilities in general beyond injection-related ones.

Background: Software development productivity is of great practical interest and has been widely investigated in the past. However, due to the rapid evolution of software development techniques and methods and the constant improvement in the use of existing ones, continuously updated evidence on productivity is constantly needed. Objectives: The research documented in this paper has the main goal to identify how different programming languages may affect productivity. Method: We analysed the ISBSG dataset, probably the largest public repository of data on software projects, with focus on the primary programming language used to develop each software project. We followed a rigorous statistical analysis approach. Moreover, we compared our analysis with the productivity data provided by Capers Jones in 1996 and 2013 and with an investigation on open-source software by Delorey et al. Results: The implementation programming language of software projects seems to affect productivity. The comparison between the productivity level of each of the analysed programming languages shows important differences with the results by Capers Jones and Delorey et al. Conclusions: This paper provides some more evidence about how each programming language has its own productivity level and highlights some interesting divergences with the results reported by Capers Jones and Delorey et al. © 2016 ACM.
